@manuel hung That`s an urban myth....Actually N.O.N.C.E. was short for "Not On Normal Communal Exercise" so they wouldn`t get attacked in the communal prison exercise yard.
I really liked John Entwisle and really fely badly when I heard of his death. With Keith, everyone knew it was coming. It was onlya matter of when. A great book on Keith is called "Full Moon" by Dougal Butler. It captured keith's life perfectly.
One of their best gigs 'ever' was at the Sundown Edmonton in 1973/4. Too bad this wasn't recorded. I was back & side stage with the Roadies. I will never forget the raw power of this band - at their best !
Keith Moon, genius. RIP, wonderful, talented, soul. If only you knew that 35 years after your death you'd still be so beloved and inspiring as rock and roll's most original and drummer and showman. Steve Percoco - couldn't have said it better. X
Pete - "What we want our 'fellow musicians' in life to do now is enjoy life without destroying themselves". I am fairly certain he was talking about John when he made that comment.
If you watch just Keith early live performances he is off on his own doing thing. Which was so COOL because he was the 1st TRUE Rock & Roll drummer. Ringo & Charlie both were GREAT at keeping a BEAT! He Marched To The BEAT of a VERY DIFFERENT DRUM! #SHOUT&SHIMMY Live 1965 Ready Steady Go....GO THERE NOW!
Very true. He played from the absolute centre of his soul. He punctuated Rogers vocals. Made space for Petes guitar when needed. Locked solid with The Ox. In a league of his own. Bonham had groove AND power. Charlie just hit it on the money every time.... still does. Ringo was Ringo. Mick Fleetwood was very underrated for groove and space. See the pattern emerging? All great drummers show their character. 🎶 (no emoge for a drum, why is that??!!) Peace.
Same here. They actually look and sound happy. I don't remember any post-Moon interviews where that was the case, esp with all 3 present. Miss the shit out of Keith and John...such amazing players and both funny men.
The tragedy in Lynyrd Skinner's case is that the pilots ran the plane out of fuel. Its a bit more complicated as to how that happened but the short truth is they ran the plane out of fuel.Very sad.
I think there are always brilliant, talented, gifted musicians who make a unique mark in musical history, like Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, John Bonham. But very rarely are there phenoms in life. Mozart was a phenom. Jimmy Hendrix I guess was a phenom on electric guitar. Keith Moon was definitely a phenom on the drums. A musical-savant baby drummer who never really grew up in life. But there was never ever another a drummer like him .
@@willoughby1888 Thank gawd most people are NOT like you. We'd all still be living in caves and burning leaves for heat. Manson did NOT live like he wanted to because he gave up on his musical path because he did NOT stick to it long enough. He was a troubled man and he gave up on his dreams ( like most people) because it didn't happen fast enough. My Father was a real bad chain smoker. But he loved smoking. And he died of lung cancer. If it were up to me I would not outlaw tobacco. or put the high tax that's on it now. He lived how he wanted to and he worked for himself, he answered to NO other man. You are not smart enough to be like Keith Moon, because you prefer "safety" on your knees to the danger of freedom on your feet. I don't smoke and I don't drink hard but unlike yourself I can think for myself instead of copying someone else's life. So if someone else lives on their own terms I can admire them without copying their self destructive habits. Hopefully someday you will be strong/ smart enough to think for yourself instead of slavishly copying others for lack of your own imagination.
In his own country journalists would take him to task for the sheer waste of loony theatrical gestures like driving his RR into a swimming pool... he could have donated it to charity, etc. While you can't deny the waste, I guess you also had to acknowledge that it was his money, if he wanted to flush it down the toilet he had a right to do it!
another bit I found The original idea for "Yellowbeard" came from Keith Moon, drummer for "The Who," who also happened to be a huge Python fan and close friend of Graham Chapman. Although involved in the early conceptual stages of "Yellowbeard," Keith died on September 7, 1978 from a drug overdose. He was, in fact, set to do some acting in Monty Python's "Life of Brian," which would begin filming nine days after his death. Imagine Keith in "Life of Brian"
Moony was very lovable and so well liked that no one ever thought to try and stop him from his excesses. He possessed talent and charm in droves and he got away with just about anything. Remember, too, that in his time (d. 1979) it was VERY uncool to tell anyone what to do about their behavior. He was the best of the best and he left us too soon.
In the 70's the lucky few who made it big had loads of money, loads of women, loads of drugs and no exposure to the real world. Keith Moon's is a cautionary tale of the dangers of naive excess.
Here’s a quote from a movie and I think this quote was made for Keith, “I have something to say...It’s better to burn out than to fade away”, A star like him comes along very rarely to burn as bright as it can before disappearing, Keith was that star he was irrepressible and lived how he wanted to of course he had his Demons but don’t we all? , In today’s world of Orange juice drinking safe and bland boring people in the music industry where personal trainers make a fortune there is no room for wild men like Keith anymore your music is all plastic wrapped and Sterile with squeaky clean performers who are there today and forgotten tomorrow characterless non entities, But people like Keith are still spoken about with awe and he always will be and he earned that notoriety with sheer guts and determination to just be him and not what others wanted him to be.
I agree and as Zep did they should have disbanded, today Pete and Roger continue on calling themselves the Who without Keith or John??? They should rename themselves "the Was" lol
I don't know....I saw them a few weeks before John kicked it, and it's the best concert I have ever been to. As Roger says, bringing Ringo's son into the band changed everything.
I understand Zep not play throughout the rest of their hay-day, but as of 2020. It's been 20 years. I'm trivializing Robert Plant's pain on lose John Bonham, but these guys are close (if not already) to their twilight. One more tour in their 70's could and should be their last hurrah.
At least Keith "lived" life to the fullest...no regrets. I am sad he died, especially from drugs/alcohol, but in his short 32 years, he squeezed in a lot of life.
He tied his drums to a post so they wouldn't go away, classic. I'm a drummer and when I play I tend to push outward on the bass drum instead of coming down on it so there was a time I used to tie a rope around the base of the drum stool and to either side of the bass drum so they drums wouldn't go away either so I totally get that. It's nice to know one was in good company even if I didn't know it at the time.
As a player in many unknown and forgotten rock bands, I attempt to imagine being in a band with Keith Moon, or one with Entwistle, or one with Towshend. With all three of them I can't even grasp... I would have to ask Roger Daltry to explain that.
A neighbor once said Moon was very precise, and it puzzled me at the time. But I came to understand his dynamics *were* very precise. The way he could escalate a fill, or direct a song was like none other I've ever heard. It has become the model for my own drumming, but bandmates often want it toned down a bit (laughing).
Playing drums for 5+ hours a day as a kid sounds like the hyper focus of ADHD too. If Keith had Autism as Pete suggested, plus ADHD, the drumming probably saved his sanity until self medicating won.
Sadly, I'm speaking as one who also has mental health issues. I think you'll find that a lot of people feel that Keith was at the very least bipolar, and there is also mention of borderline personality disorder. Kim tried to get him to see a psychiatrist because of to his problems. Alcohol and drugs obviously made him worse, but there were definitely problems before that.. I don't mean to be contentious. I still love and respect Keith. Maybe more so, it's very hard to live with.
@905Alive - yeah, she freaked out apparently and had to be sedated. I can't imagine how she must have felt. She loved Keith. Her and Kim were the only women by all accounts who ever really loved Keith for himself, flaws and all. Tony Fletcher's book is extraordinary and gives a good insight to Keith. I agree completely with Tony that Keith had terrible mental health problems. Such a shame, he could probably be helped today were he still alive. Rest in Peace Keith, dear boy x
Keith Moon was ABSOLUTELY ONE OF A KIND. But, as it turned out, he wasn't INDESTRUCTIBLE. WHAT A LOSS FOR EVERYONE, US, HIS FAMILY, THE BAND AND ESPECIALLY FOR KEITH MOON. REST IN PEACE BROTHER.
Keith: "Fuck i forgot something" -band turns around from a long drive- "goes back inside and comes back out later* Band: "what'd you forget?" Keith: "I forgot to smash the television."
there will never never be a other drumer like the MOON not by 100000000000000000000000000000000% the best never and the best there nver wil be RIP my friend by a mega fan who was lucky to see u play god bless
Ironic how Pete talks about Keith dying from drugs, and fellow musicians to just enjoy their lives............and then years later.....John.....ugh............
Yeah, but John didn't "really" die due to drugs. He died due to a heart attack. 95% of people could've snorted the small amount of cocaine he did and would have survived, but not when you are taking meds to keep your heart ticking. I do not advocate the use of cocaine, but I 100% believe that most people who die from it like James Honeymoon Scott from The Pretenders or basketball star Len Bias do so due to any underlying medical condition. Mick Fleetwood said he used cocaine all day and night for 25 straight years and had no problems except financial issues. If he can do that, one sniff of coke is not going to kill a musician unless something else is going on, and based on all the evidence that exists, John didn't go on some drug binge in Vegas. He shouldn't have been using coke with the heart issue. Just like someone should not be drinking Wild Turkey when they possess cirrhosis of the liver due to non-alcoholic reasons ( for instance, the usage of certain bi polar meds that devastated the liver of a buddy of mine.).
well said guitardds, he was able to inflict his personality into the kit and raised the bar for rock band members to be entertaining to watch as well...what pete said towards the end of the video was also true ... a good read is the biography by Dougal, Keith's assistant
It's fuckin' unbelievable how many creative geniuses the world has lost to drugs !! And alcohol is one of the worst drugs of them all because it's legal, socially accepted, cheap and very easy to get !!
I think that's the element that is missing after Keith died: the aggression. They just were not the same band afterwards and their music never rose to the heights as in their glory days. I rank Quadrophenia as among my favourite albums, as well as those few that I enjoy every single track. I think it's vastly better than Tommy. We can only imagine the music they would have made had Moonie overcame his addictions and self destructive streak. Our loss.
I would love to see a spreadsheet on how much money all the equipment destroyed was worth in todays dollars. I always wondered what their record company thought about it...and their road crew!
I guess we'll never know, the hardest part for me is the 30+ undigested heminevrin pills in his stomach. I don't believe in normal, it doesn't exist, I think some people are just boring, others have a light that Keith had, his was bright. I really always identified with Keith, I could always drum like him ( see my site for videos); he'll always be a part of me. Only Annette and Dougal can give accurate descriptions of his personality traits and patterns.
British Gentlemen, Raconteurs with oratory prowess, deep intellectuals, reserved and stoic philosophers, I think Keith had an irrepressible boyish charms liked to surprise with witty repartee. The poems by Rabindranath Where the Mind is Without Fear compendium if over thirty five poems soothes the soul as poet laureate and inspired Zemlinsky orchestration. remembering Zubin Metha the classical music Conductor and Michelle Legend exquisite classical film scores. Cheers Sir Peter, Sir Rodger, Sir Kenny and bandmates

Better to live 33 years as Keith than 500 years as Cliff Richard......
Stewart Nicol tell that to his daughter.
I lki Cliff Richard
@manuel hung oh wow--didn't know accusations had been made against him...this day and age everyone is accused of something...even Pete faced accusations....but yes sir point taken I will be keeping eye out. was under impression Cliff was straight arrow--ok I could be wrong!!
@manuel hung whats a noncey...ok ok whew you are really zeroed in on this guys...wow!!
Great book!
One of their best gigs 'ever' was at the Sundown Edmonton in 1973/4. Too bad this wasn't recorded. I was back & side stage with the Roadies. I will never forget the raw power of this band - at their best !
Pete’s voice cracking talking about Keith being gone is just heartbreaking.
So very beautifully said! Also beautifully sad.
"Life is a constant act."
Smart man he was.
the old MTV interview from the late 1980s. First time I'm seen all three guys laugh during an interview.
Same here. They actually look and sound happy. I don't remember any post-Moon interviews where that was the case, esp with all 3 present.
Miss the shit out of Keith and John...such amazing players and both funny men.
Not To Be Taken Away always has and always will creep me out.
Yeah, is like Lynyrd skynyrd Being in flames on street survivors!!
Yup! And then, they removed that on later copies. Looks even more creepy without them now!
The tragedy in Lynyrd Skinner's case is that the pilots ran the plane out of fuel. Its a bit more complicated as to how that happened but the short truth is they ran the plane out of fuel.Very sad.
Danny is so right.
The plane ran out of fuel. And the pilot didn’t react fast enough to the situation.
A bit like John Lennon's last single, released shortly before his death, is called (Just Like) Starting Over.
Kieth Moon's life was not in any way sad.
He lived exactly how he wished to.
The only sadness is that we miss him.
It was sad he was manic depressed and couldn't stop living the image he had created of himself ...
I guess if beating the shit out of your wife daily is all part and parcel of living your life the way you wished to...Pal you are fucking clueless.
@@willoughby1888 Charles Manson I'm sure did not want to be in prison. . .
Love watching Keith play drums on 'A Quick One' on the Stones 'Rock & Roll Circus. It truly is a thing of beauty.
another bit I found
The original idea for "Yellowbeard" came from Keith Moon, drummer for "The Who," who also happened to be a huge Python fan and close friend of Graham Chapman.
I could watch 2:06 over and over again. So much love for him shown there.
"Not to be taken away"
He came, did what he had to do, got it done and split…
Moony was very lovable and so well liked that no one ever thought to try and stop him from his excesses. He possessed talent and charm in droves and he got away with just about anything. Remember, too, that in his time (d. 1979) it was VERY uncool to tell anyone what to do about their behavior. He was the best of the best and he left us too soon.
He died in 1979, correcting my error of 1978.
If I ever need to laugh and feel the fun of life I just watch Kieth Moon videos. Works every time!
Omg Roger’s laugh in this and John’s deep voice.
Best drummer...and biggest hooligan..
You can tell how sad Pete is in that last sentence :(, so true though rip moonie
In the 70's the lucky few who made it big had loads of money, loads of women, loads of drugs and no exposure to the real world. Keith Moon's is a cautionary tale of the dangers of naive excess.
but he loved every damn minute of it i bet, or at least tried to anyway! RIP KEITH MOON
And, Lee and Harry, Keith’s excess was even surprisingly excessive compared to the excess of the average rock and roll superstar.
I still love this clip And the music's all right
Why does John's voice sound like a bass
Thunderfingers =thundervoice.
Because he is the OX
Because he is a human bass.
The Who without Keith is like Zep without Bonzo...both bands were done without their key 4th man on the kit.
I highly agree.Love both bands alot.
YOur Welcome Plant won’t agree.
to people in the metal community , the who are rock gods !
At least Keith "lived" life to the fullest...no regrets. I am sad he died, especially from drugs/alcohol, but in his short 32 years, he squeezed in a lot of life.
What a GEM
THANK YOU
He tied his drums to a post so they wouldn't go away, classic.
Still laughing at He tied his drum kit to a post so it wouldn't go away. You can just see his face while explaining to the other 3
Car mats work better if you have a wooden floor!
And taping his earphones to his head because he knew he was too energetic and they would fall off x
I think Moon was full on Bi Polar. But in those days no one had ever heard of it or ever discussed it.
yes it's possible-also very insecure
Playing drums for 5+ hours a day as a kid sounds like the hyper focus of ADHD too. If Keith had Autism as Pete suggested, plus ADHD, the drumming probably saved his sanity until self medicating won.
Pete and Keith were really good friends. You can always see the pain in Pete when talking about Keith.
Maybe more so, it's very hard to live with.
love that drumming thundering in from the sea like a turbulent wind
Keith Moon had a lot of personality issues, but he was one hell of a drummer. I was lucky enough to see him play live.
Saw them early 70s a few times, best shows ever and Moon himself was worth the price of admission!!
I don’t know that you can separate the personality issues from his drumming. I think they were intertwined.
They Were Rock Gods,Thats Why They Got Away With It!Long Live Keith Moon!
The effects of drugs and alcohol are showing on Pete and John while Roger looks young still.
"Not to be taken away"
There will never be another human being like him. Still waiting for the movie to come out.
Keith Moon - the living embodiment of I dont give a fuck!🤣
Thank you for posting this.
Keith was a sports car with no brakes.period
Jack Williams a very good analogy...
Keith Moon was ABSOLUTELY ONE OF A KIND. But, as it turned out, he wasn't INDESTRUCTIBLE. WHAT A LOSS FOR EVERYONE, US, HIS FAMILY, THE BAND AND ESPECIALLY FOR KEITH MOON.
REST IN PEACE BROTHER.
Death is not the worst thing that can happen.
+Meilir Thomas Both things would be better avoided if you can help it!
I think the worst thing that can happen to you is to be a janitor in a porn theater.
Keith Moon was the craziest human being on the planet but when he was playing the drums he showed his true rage
Keith: "Fuck i forgot something"
-band turns around from a long drive-
"goes back inside and comes back out later*
Band: "what'd you forget?"
Keith: "I forgot to smash the television."

Kieth Moon: Rock legend, consummate entertainer, greatest rock drummer alltime.
Pete originally though it was another of Keith's jokes, until he saw the body, it obviously still hurts
they could read each others minds on stage
Clarkerots sad
@@MattSmith-iq1ld Which bi-polar meds ruin the liver?
Pete nearly died from drink n drugs too in the 1980`s.
It's sad he thought he had to act like a fool around people.

Our loss.
Agree about Quadrophenia being better than Tommy. It’s a more mature album, and it showcases Townshend’s writing at its finest.

me too GREAT POINT
I heard Pete used to grab guitars off music shop walls and run out the door. They couldn't afford the damages for awhile.
