I prefer to build an inverted fire lay (or top-down) fire lay. Big stuff on the bottom and progressively smaller materials on top, with the tinder and kindling at the very top. Light the top, it burns down and gets a good fire going. Fire likes chaos, so making things a bit random and messy can help getting the fire going, so I don't worry if my lay is a little random.
