Pronunciation is very important because when people viewing this, that don't know how to pronounce the food item and goes to a Puerto Rican restaurant and repeats one of these foods, the person taking the order, will not know what he or she is talking about. Especially if their English is not too good.

Pasteles are made different ways, not necessarily from plantains. We can make them from green bananas and/or a combination of roots such as yautia, malanga, ñame, and yuca.
As a representative of the Puerto Rican community I agree 100% with what this man said, a.k.a. if you see these foods being sold in a restaurant eat them you will not regret it.
The difference between pasteles and tamales is tamales are made with corn flour and pasteles are made with plantains green bananas and etc. And tamales are steamed and pasteles are boiled in water. But I agree with how delicious my island food is and you forgot bacalaitos
Our empanadillas, also known in parts of the island as pastelillos, do not have a “thicker” crust, on the contrary, it is crispy, light, and airy; we call them pastelillos “volaitos”. Its filling can be the traditional picadillo (seasoned ground beef) or chicken, cheese, jueyes (mangrove crabs), and even guava paste. Thank you for promoting interest in our Puerto Rican foods.
My favorite is pastelon the sweetness of the ripe plantains with the flavor of the meat and cheese makes the best combination. It's like having a party in your mouth. My favorite dessert is flancocho. It's a combination of flan and cake mix. Puerto Ricans may mix some things up like Pavochon a version of Lechon or Pernil flavor but with Turkey meat instead of traditional Pork and usually made for Thanksgiving. It's because we found Turkey is a dry meat and a bit unflavored and of course Puerto Ricans decided to take the same seasoning of Lechon and apply it to the Turkey meat and give it that garlic, oregano, adobo salty crispy flavor and texture and keeping the meat inside the turkey moist with monfongo stuffing and homemade chicken broth.
Mofongo and Alcapurrias are my all time favorites ♡ specifically during the holidays in the island visiting friends and family. It's really good to try Enpanadas and tostones. Love your channel so informative.
I am Puerto Rican and love my Puerto Rican food. You should also try Flan which originated in Spain and brought to Puerto Rico is an egg custard is delicious, as well as Bacalaito frito that's Cod fish fritters is also delicious. Thank you for this video. I always said that my food is the best. That's my personal opinion.
I agree my Dad made the cod fish fritters, he also made a salad with salted cod fish that he soaked to get rid of the salt. He would break it up and add onions, olives and tomatoes and olive oil. Yum!!

You forgot the bacalaitos they are really good and also the Tripleta Sandwich. Bacalaitos are fried codfish fritters. The Tripleta Sandwich is a sandwich made with pan sobao 3 different types of meats usually pernil, chiken and cube steak, Swiss cheese, cabbage, potato sticks and mayoketchup. Hell there's a version of the sandwich were I live in the west area of Puerto Rico called the Monserrate Special that instead of 3 different type of meat you get 7.

You know, chinese food in Puerto Rico is like from another world. They have adopted some of our flavors and for whatever reason their food tastes (in my humble rican opinion) better than what you can find in the states. I would kill for some Rican Style Chinese food 🤤
Caribbean style Chinese food is way better than the U.S Chinese as you said because they adapt some of the local flavors. Trinidad Chinese food is soo good.
Funny growing up in PR #4 really wasnt that big as it's gotten. I mean mofongo was definitely a thing but there wasn't that huge craze as you see nowadays. I'd say nowadays mofongo is the most popular PR food out there. Also, I'm a horrible Puerto Rican cause I absolutely hate #5 pasteles. That's a Christmas time sort of food but I remember all my relatives would always put one on my plate and I'd eat everything but the pastel. I'd recommend another one that's not on your list, but this one is more of a street food fare, I HIGHLY recommend La Tripleta sandwich. It is amazing!
I’m 59 and I always remember Mofongo being very big in Puerto Rico. In fact, in the 60’s there was a big place near Bayamon famous for their Mofongo, which at that time was only served with Caldo de Pollo, not the red sauces they use now. The place burned down but it was called ‘El Pilon’. It was always packed.
Orenitas de cerdo con gineitos al escabeche is another Yummy thing to eat in Puerto Rico but like my mother cook that nobody believe and she also make a very sabroso padtelon and also lrngua de Baca mechada o rellena
Thanks for shearing about are food im a Puerto Rican and i love my food and cooking is my favorite i make all that you mention and more thanks i enjoy this video very much.
Omg everything looks so delicious 😍 I’ve never seen or tried any of these before. I love coconut flavoured desserts, that one looked yum. These videos are great
as a puertorriqueño, love this, dont pay attention to the grammar/pronunciation dragons , puertoricans cant even say their own things correct for the most part anyways. keep up the great work 🔥✨
what ever happen to bacalaitos, budin, arroz dulce, theres alot more foods but I understand this is only 10 must try. pasteles are not similar to tamales, pasteles are made out of a lot of root food and tamales are only made from corn & if I'm not mistaken tamales are steamed and pasteles are boiled in salt water, the only thing they are in similarity is the way they wrap them.
Pasteles are different from tamales. Tamales only have maza and meat.pasteles have so many different ingredients and they taste better than tamales. Sorry to tell the truth but I think he should of included pastaellios and morceas bacalo salad. Pana peppitta.
If you need this for school here you go: Alcapurrias, Yuca fritters filled with ground beef Arroz con gandules, rice cooked with pigeon peas Empanadillas, puerto rican version of empanadas , meat pie Mofongo, mashed green plantains with meat Pasteles, smashed green plantains filled with meat Pastelon, fried meat between plantains Pernil, Roasted pork shoulder Relleno de papa, potato balls filled with ground beef and deep fried Tembleque, coconut milk sugar and cornstarch Tostones Sliced plantains deepfried
Nice video!!! I had to mention that you have 2 versions of Pastelon. One was the traditional pastelon made with sweet ripped plantains and the second one was made with mash potatoes, similar to the Shepherds pie... much love bro✌
You got it backwards. Traditional pastelón is made with mashed potatoes. The one made with ripe plantains (amarillos o maduros) is called piñón. (Check the recipe in PR's cooking "bible" Cocina Criolla o PR Cookery de Carmen Aboy de Valdejuli). :)
But every culture/country has amazing food of course in there own ways but not to brag the whole carribbean is the best! 🇵🇷🇯🇲🇭🇹🇩🇴🇨🇺🇧🇧🇦🇬🇦🇨🇧🇸🇹🇹🇫🇰🇵🇳🇳🇿🇲🇸🇦🇮🇦🇺🇬🇾
I love asian (Chinese, Japanese, thailand, Philippines), african (Nigeria, ghana), n south American food (Columbian, Peruvian, Mexican, Salvadoran, Ecuadorian) too😋
The problem with other Latinos food is that they don't have the rice and beans together cooking together. They eat rice and beans separately. But in reality the rice and beans are going in the same mouth. I live in California right now and all the Spanish food here is bland and has nothing on food from Puerto Rico. I bet if a Puerto Rican open up a restaurant here in California I bet they will be competing against other Latinos food but I already know that the food from Puerto Rico is 100 times better than the other Latin country food
You're right doña Denice I eat the rice and habichuelas cooked apart but when ready to eat I mixed them in the plate with "mucho caldito". I don't like dry cooked rice. IMO
I am third generation Puerto Rican and didn't grow up near family that spoke Spanish and cooked Puerto Rican food. All I know is Mexican food, because all the Hispanics where I live are Mexican. Always wondered what Puerto Ricans ate.
Very very good! I am from puertorico and here are some of my favorites, please look this up while on Puerto Rico. Go to the west towns like the cabo rojo, combate or anasco or ponce area and try: 1) whole red chillo fish with tostones, 2)chuletas kan kan with mamposteao rice 3)canoas de carne 4) piononos Awesome you will crave this forever Deserts 5) lares original ice creams(many crazy flavors) try rum with pasas lol 6) dulce de papaya con queso blanco -warning extreme delicius flavor addictive lol' 7) arroz con dulce Breakfast 8) farina o maicena 9) desayuno clasico= 2 sunny side up eggs, honey ham with toasted bread with butter, 2 sliced bacon and coffe and/or orange juice, this is similar to american breakfast but bread is pan de agua toasted, and somehow is a differen flavor, very good Puerto rico food is awesome, i belive the reason of any of these food not being more popular is due to the longer preparation and cooking time required for these dishes to be cooked by example pernil may take up to 4 to 6 hours to be cook at 375 degress for it to done, the long preparation of up to 3-4 hourd mixing and blending roots to the right consistency before cooking make this disshes more art, usually your mum aunts and wife help with different steps for a family cooking time, i believe with time this dishes will eventually disapear if the new generations dont embrace the history and love required to do these dishes. Enjoy while still available 😃
Not called ketchup mayo, it's the other way around - mayo ketchup. also. wish you would have said Medianoche sandwiches, but, I don't think anywhere in the US has it since the bread is specifically found in Puerto Rico (I think). in any rate, definitely more homesick after watching this.

Also you have to try the puertorican bakeries. The bread called water bread is delicious. They have a bakery in every town and the food is delicious.
You know, chinese food in Puerto Rico is like from another world. They have adopted some of our flavors and for whatever reason their food tastes (in my humble rican opinion) better than what you can find in the states. I would kill for some Rican Style Chinese food 🤤
Sounds interesting. Thanks. Please continue to follow my channel to see other great food videos this year!!
Caribbean style Chinese food is way better than the U.S Chinese as you said because they adapt some of the local flavors. Trinidad Chinese food is soo good.
@@nipbru92 Exactly and i like Caribbean style chinese food so much.

Yep...Monfongo is currently big. I do not enjoy pasteles either. I may try them again down the road. Perhaps....it depends on who makes them. 🤔
I will be checking your other vids later on. Thanks & Happy NY 2021
Awesome, thank you!
I'm from Puerto Rico and I tried all of them

The Pasteles look really good. I’ll have to add that to my list of foods to try!
Are there Puerto Rican restaurants in Kansas?
Pasteles are delicious 😋
They are very good :)
Thought I knew Caribbean, this was mostly new to me, great ten picks, thanks.
what ever happen to bacalaitos, budin, arroz dulce, theres alot more foods but I understand this is only 10 must try. pasteles are not similar to tamales, pasteles are made out of a lot of root food and tamales are only made from corn & if I'm not mistaken tamales are steamed and pasteles are boiled in salt water, the only thing they are in similarity is the way they wrap them.
Thanks. Please continue to follow my channel to see other great food videos!
Pasteles are different from tamales. Tamales only have maza and meat.pasteles have so many different ingredients and they taste better than tamales. Sorry to tell the truth but I think he should of included pastaellios and morceas bacalo salad. Pana peppitta.
Good job enjoy it

Nice video!!! I had to mention that you have 2 versions of Pastelon. One was the traditional pastelon made with sweet ripped plantains and the second one was made with mash potatoes, similar to the Shepherds pie... much love bro✌
Thanks for the info! Please continue to follow my channel to see other great food videos this year!
@@gthekid08 interesting, i have never heard of, piñon. Thanks for the info.
Very good Spanish sir. My favor are pasteles and arcapurias arrows con gandules. Sorry cresi in Florida y Michigan Detroit

When you eat rise in Puerto Rico and they give you abichuelas guisadas you need to eat both things at the same time no separating
@@AntonioLopez-gm1nh watch his other vid where he visits a PR Rest. in North Hollywood. Very good vid.
You're right doña Denice I eat the rice and habichuelas cooked apart but when ready to eat I mixed them in the plate with "mucho caldito". I don't like dry cooked rice. IMO
@@joeycarr1398 it's best with a slice of avocado mixed in.
@@luisaymerich9675 you are not Puerto Rican
I am third generation Puerto Rican and didn't grow up near family that spoke Spanish and cooked Puerto Rican food. All I know is Mexican food, because all the Hispanics where I live are Mexican. Always wondered what Puerto Ricans ate.

The first one must be Rice and beans, fried chicken and sweet fried plantain (amarillitos)
Fun but also cautionary fact: Big Pun LOVED Puerto Rican food. He would eat 10 to 14 servings of it everyday.

Very very good! I am from puertorico and here are some of my favorites, please look this up while on Puerto Rico. Go to the west towns like the cabo rojo, combate or anasco or ponce area and try:
1) whole red chillo fish with tostones,
2)chuletas kan kan with mamposteao rice
3)canoas de carne
4) piononos Awesome you will crave this forever
Deserts
5) lares original ice creams(many crazy flavors) try rum with pasas lol
6) dulce de papaya con queso blanco -warning extreme delicius flavor addictive lol'
7) arroz con dulce
Breakfast
8) farina o maicena
9) desayuno clasico= 2 sunny side up eggs, honey ham with toasted bread with butter, 2 sliced bacon and coffe and/or orange juice, this is similar to american breakfast but bread is pan de agua toasted, and somehow is a differen flavor, very good
Puerto rico food is awesome, i belive the reason of any of these food not being more popular is due to the longer preparation and cooking time required for these dishes to be cooked by example pernil may take up to 4 to 6 hours to be cook at 375 degress for it to done, the long preparation of up to 3-4 hourd mixing and blending roots to the right consistency before cooking make this disshes more art, usually your mum aunts and wife help with different steps for a family cooking time, i believe with time this dishes will eventually disapear if the new generations dont embrace the history and love required to do these dishes.

Thanks. I'll see if I can find that sandwich! Please continue to follow my channel to see other great food videos this year!
