You two are a nicely matched couple. You could actually be the poster couple for moving to the Philippines for middle-aged men. It's very encouraging for older single guys in America [or any western country] who feel lost and wondering, "is this it" ... For myself, I moved to Phuket, Thailand from Hawaii when I was 57, [I found an amazing single Thai Mother of 2] a couple of years before that on a vacation and then moved after a few years. Best thing ever. I will admit, having a "local" wife or partner, certainly helps when one doesn't speak Thai. Of course, that's the comforting difference being in the Philippines, but I like learning languages, so that wasn't an issue. The Philippines sounds cheaper by 10-20% than Thailand. or at least Phuket, which is 10-20% more than the rest of Thailand. I bought a home after being here a year, and it will be paid off this month. I am retired/kind of. I like all that Phuket and Thailand has to offer, getting anything and consistently is what I like about Thailand. Either country will certainly be an improvement than living in America and dealing with their craziness. Deal with Southeast Asian craziness, its much nicer, people smile and the weather is normally very nice, sometimes wet and sometimes hot. Good Luck in making your choices...

@@rawman909 > Thailand. in the overall is probably 5-8Centigrade "hotter" I like it hot. my last trip to Hawaii in May, I couldn't get warm, between air-con cars and stores, I felt like I was freezing. But then, our Hot, Dry season is from January to April/may so, I was used to the warm weather.
Never say Never....Always stay positive and move forward no matter what you face in life.. If you get the chance to come and visit Iloilo or Guimaras you guys are welcome... Philippines is the best place to retire and even build your future. I love the people and the country....Best of luck guys and keep in touch...

You can buy house and lot and pay installments,at the end of the day you have your own house

Sounds like your expenses are similar to Lina's and mine at our home on Cebu when we are there, although we own our house so there is no rent costs. But apart from that, our budget is very much the same as you guys, sometimes there are unexpected extra outgoings which we budget for. Jesus Christ that woman is beautiful. I’ve been watching a lot of expat vids on their experiences over there as I prepare to move over there and this guy has the most beautiful wife of them all. There is more to life and love than looks I get it but damn… this guy is a f-king inspiration. My god.
Philippine Gas/L as of today ranges from P76.45 to P96.15. Diesel is P81 and Kerosene is P86. It depends on the location.

Prices in America has gone up a lot in just the last year. I'm guessing, food prices between US and Phil are not the same at all. Big Mac meal in the US is around $9 while only $4 in the Phil.
Great video Mark, everything on point, except the cost of restaurants. Prices have gone up considerably here in the US since you were here. A dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant in Dumaguete last month cost about 1/2, sometimes 1/3 of what it costs here in the US. I was in Dumaguete for almost a month with my Fiancee and spent about 3k, and that included a lot of extravagances ie trips to a few resorts including Siquijor Island, eating out 3x a day, tricycle rides, laundry, therapeutic massage, treating her friends and family, a few gifts etc. You can live really well on just a few thousand US dollars per month there.
I was thinking the same thing about the eating out while I watched the video, I go into a restaurant by myself here in New York, I have to spend at least $30-$40 just for myself. When I was in the Philippines a couple months ago, I was spending about $20-$30 for 2 of us to eat a good meal. Can't wait to be able to move there in a few months .
To me, rent is the biggest (I’m not American but I spent almost 6yrs there). Man, renting $1200 a month! It’s nice and all but really more than I needed. A 200-300 a month in the Philippines would be enough

Nice video, Mark. Restaurant prices in the US have gone up a lot in the past 3-4 years. Two adults and maybe a kid is $40-50 for a meal at a non-upscale restaurant like Red Robin, Pho, pizza, or Chinese.
Thanks for sharing, it really helps understanding. It´s so easy to have prejudices from the start of the video, but later on it seems like you are soulmates. Similar type of people.

Very interesting information that is needed for those considering retiring in the Philippines like me. Plus, it depends on the location where you want to live like myself, I have in mind Cebu City. I will be applying for Philippine sponsored American Military SRRV Retirement Visa in the future. So glad I was station at the old Clark Air Base (Angeles) Area back in 1991. Thanks for the video. I appreciate the time you spend putting these together. I think a lot of things here (Sacramento, ca) are much more expensive. A fast food meal is $9. A meal at a restaurant will run $30-$50 each. Chinese take out with 4 items just cost me $60. A very nice meal at a steakhouse here in town will cost you $140-$200 depending on your wine tastes. Gas here (with $0.54 tax/g) is running $5.85(Costco) to $6.90(Chevron) per gallon. Head of lettuce is $1.79. Can of beans is $1.59.
A lot more expensive then the Philippines
Weekly expenses for us in Masbate Island is 3 to 5k per week. GASOLINA 8 hundred peso. Plus Kuryente 4 to 5 k per month. It's expensive in the Philippines and Australia. Tighten you're budget as have implemented since over the past 3 months. Enjoy the Philippines. AMEN
Low labor costs in PH is the reason McDonalds can offer its food at great low prices compared to US. In US a McDonald sandwich is now $5. In PH it may be only $2.
3.78 liters per gallon, 90 pesos per liter, divided by 50 pesos per dollar= $6.80 a gallon.
Rents went up, groceries went up, power and water bills also went up. Taxes on property went up. Even the sit-in restaurants also went up. Most of the restaurants now includes cover charge for using their table and chair.
Cheaper and better in Vietnam, and the food is so much better

Sounds great thanks for sharing. The more person knows the better off they are. Wisdom comes from experience. My budget is about 2000us but if I keep it at 2000 that allows me to save a few to. I still have my house payment here in the USA. It's a bit overwhelming at times I'm not sure what kind of Visa I should apply for as well. And then there's getting it re-stamped. I used to do the circuit in Thailand... Only because I manufacture jewelry and teach people how to. Well that's where I started. Nice video thank you

I am curious about costs, I am flying into Thailand Monday. Haven't been in Asia for almost 4 years. Inflation in the US is out of control. My hope is I can live there for what I am spending here each month .

Rate of inflation here in the states today is around 9 to 10%.
Due to inflation, Prices have EXPLOEDED out of control almost everywhere including America.

Maybe it’s better to get a car especially if you get older. It’s safer too. There are cheaper used cars that are so affordable. You will be more relax and your wife can practice driving too to get ready when go back to US. Also, save for emergency medical care as one of the guys just had a stroke and heart attack.
Just came back for a 1 week celebrity cruise in the Caribbean and thought of you everytime I walked through the park west art gallery area. Excellent cruise but I definitely gained about 10 lbs for the week.

Yes housing is where you save the most money in the Philippines
Good to see you are not worried about food there. 😂1,500 usd if not eating out and 2,000 if living the night life and eating out. Most people can get by on $300 rent and $400 food bill. $200 for electric and phones ..gas.. $200 for extras on some months. Then $100 for transportation. Travel and hotels.. Meds, clothes and restaurants fill in the last of the $1,500 budget.

Prices goes up here also in ca. 16, 20% more. Report says that there are prices that are doubled. Gas alone less than $3 before pandemic hits to a record high of $6 and in some areas even $7.

I've been in the RP 7 years and am married with a 14 year old child and have built our home. Our expenses are approx 2800 USD a month. Compared to USA our savings are mostly related to taxes and insurances. To put things in perspective there are places in Spain where the cost of living is less than the RP. See Matt Wilkie.

She's in the province in northern samar thing are still pretty cheap there. She very frugal.
Hi Gary, Do you guys have issues with typhoons there? Samar gets hit pretty severely when typhoons hit land there.
We're located on the west side of the island between Allen & Calbyog. Usually gets hit from the other side. Also have some mountains that kind of shield our property to an extent.

Try visit small island ... Peaceful place. Marble capital. We hav so many pretty beaches here. Everybody welcome. We got Bonbon beach and alot more beaches to injoy

That is true we did 3x a month grocery shopping here in Dumaguete. I fully understand you don't care the price but for us we do care heee..heee you are very lucky staying in the Philippines. It is higher now the price. We spend 5k to 7k for our grocery. Our electric cost us here 12K to 13k water is including in our rent. Looks you stayed Luxurious apartment for 30K a month wow Amazing!
You seem very wealthy, waltzing through the supermarket not looking at prices. For pensioners that wouldn't be an option, in fact - they would need to be shopping at the local farmers markets rather than supermarkets. Your expenses definitely aren't rock bottom, but also aren't extravagant. Thanks for the video as always!
Not that wealthy if he doesn't have a car. Like he said, you need food and can't negotiate prices so you just buy it.

I think for me to be comfortable in the Philippines, I would need at least $1,500/month but $1,800 is probably better considering inflation. This would be places like Cebu and not in Manila where I’ve heard it can get quite a bit more expensive for areas like BGC.
If you are renting a hotel yes its going to be more expensive. Try AIRBNB if you want to save a little . however if you plan to stay in manila its better if you get your own house however its not going to be easy unless you are married to a filipina. BGC is like a mini new york its becoming the mecca of business in PH. it used to be makati only but BGC and Makati is a business hub atleast 70% of its area. that's why it is expensive.
My style doing grocery i don't go just one store i went to 3 different store in one store i used to go there for american brand only this is membership store and the rest two stores just for the local brand.i do aware of the prices because i dont want to over spent money one thing i make sure i keep 15hundred bucks for emergency money.

Good discussion; could you give a little insight on how you are permitted to stay in the PH on a long-term basis; I've researched this so-called SRRV retirement visa and their info is a little confusing; I understand there is an age requirement 50+, proof of income + a deposit into a savings bank, and then an Annual fee. Did you have to apply for this while present in the PH? Also, the permission to stay on a US passport seems to range from 7-59 days with possibility of extending it while there. I guess, you find out on arrival? I'd like to hear how you managed all this and the experience of your initial move to the PH. Thanks.
You receive a 30 day visa upon arrival then you have to extend it for 30 days, then after that you can extend it for up to 6 months for a total of up to 36 months. Then you have to exit the Philippines for 24 hour and you can return and start the same process again.
I like the idea of owning our home and having 2k a month to live. Not too big but money for comfort.

I use a Taxi all the time , very cheap $2 a trip in cebu ..no need for a car here ....food 21k a month 👌
If you use aircon 24/7 your electric bill will be high .....it is always hot here ...if you can put up with the heat you will be fine ...$1500 A month is a good living standard .
If you feel that you need to use the AC that much you should move to the higher elevations or do what Mark has done, live one the water in a upstairs dwelling where you get good breezes off of the water.

Your budge is good we got a zweet deal my rent is $ 200 per month weed don't eat oiuy much so we use more gas food is lot higher eater and electricity little higher because we have three in the family and we ate putting through Colage so if you consider all of that we about the same for our budget
