Notably Substitute was eventually modified to work at blocking these moves in Pokemon Stadium, which while not specifically relevant here due to being released after the 1997 tournament has led to the unusual situation where the "updated" Gen 1 battle system is treated as it's own side metagame ("Stadium OU") and the standard RBY ladder on Smogon still uses handheld cartridge mechanics.
@@GameMiestrowhich means there are effectively 4 different versions of Gen 1. There is the earliest form, the one being played here with stuff like 30% freeze chance on blizzard, which is red and green. There's RBY, the standard in modern Smogon tournaments. There is the version with the updates from pokémon stadium. And finally, there's RBY but with move trade backs allowed, where you can add some moves that weren't learned by specific pokémon until generation 2, but could be traded back to generation 1
i’d probably wanna see gen 6 or gen 7 OU if you’d be down, i miss that shit. if it’s battle factory or fandoms that’s cool too but those are my favoritez
I think Rhydon cant use or hit with Horndrill, cause your Pokemon was level 55 and his Rhydon was level 50. I'm not sure but OHKO Moves dont work if your level is smaller
the mode only 'sucks' cause of evasion clause being removed and the 30% freeze chance. i think it could be interesting to have the 'bring 6 pick 3' format for gen one without the busted jank rules of of a tournament older than most modern pokemon fans
this ruleset eventually became the "poke cup" format in pokemon stadium its basically nintendo cup 97 but with like... 25% of the bullshit removed -blizzard freeze chance nerfed to 10% -built in freeze/sleep clause -sleep nerfed to last 0-3 turns, so it isn't basically a ko anymore -evasion still exists but it was nerfed a bit -hyper beam nerfed so lv 55 tauros isn't quite as scary -faster mons crit a bit less, slower mons crit a bit more
Could they have horn drilled Tauros or would it not have worked because rhydon is slower? Fun video nonetheless, I find gen 1 competitive really interesting
I've always considered PERSONALLY, gen 1 to be the worst gen for competitive mons because of how RNG based and "repetitive" it feels. What do people think of it? I've always been genuinely curious to know.
Personally anything before physical/special split is like beta version for me. Some mons is fucked because their type and stat doesn't allign. But if i have to rank Gen 3 > Gen 1 > Gen 2.
@@arikorma9059 oh yeah, I definitely agree. I think everything had just a very repetitive playstyle, like, while I do enjoy ADV, you end up going against the same teams over and over again which makes eit super repetitive imo
As someone who’s played a lot of Smogon tours for old gens in the past, I don’t think there’s really an objective “worst” gen. It just comes down to preference. Even in the hax fiesta known as RBY OU, the better player will win the vast majority of the time. Players like Troller, ABR, and Serpi still completely wipe the floor with everyone who isn’t at that level.
RBY OU is okay, but it's a different game. It is a game of probabilities, much more than other generations. A rough order probably looks something like 3 > 8 > 2 > 7 > 1 > 4 > 5 > 6 for me.
I loved playing RBY OU back in the day because it was not as stall heavy as GSC or 386. Unfortunately most people did never really dive into the metagame and just considered it a hax fiesta. Don't get me wrong, there is certainly more luck involved but every decision matters way more than in other metas. Also smaller decisions around status moves matter way more, because there is way more gravity behind the wrong Pokemon getting slept or paralyzed. That was also the reason why back in the day players like VIL, Arkani or Justin would repeadetly win smogon tours or RBY tournaments. The first battle here is a good example. You know you have the slower Jynx so you need to lead Electrode and when the opponent reveals Rhydon you know your Electrode is useless so you have to tank the Lovely Kiss with it. Don't do that and you have essentially lost.
I like the idea of having different level pokemon. Like if a modern day VGC format where they're level 50 instead of 100, but your team is comprised of pokemon level 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55. It's cool seeing teams where just by looking at levels you can see which pokemon is favored, but it could make the math of "pokemon A's modest overheat can ohko pokemon B" because now with all the level variance it just becomes so complicated that it's almost unpredictable.
@@cryochick9044 You'd be surprised how adamant certain "best in the world NC '97" players can be about the implications of "PP stall Muk is a viable strategy"
Hypnosis does go through substitute, yes. So does Thunder Wave. It prevents freeze, burn, poison, direct confusion and indirect paralysis.

Your opponent be like “unfortunate doesnt even begin to describe …”
Me: Wow, he brought Blaziken, nice choice.
My brain, suddenly turning on: dude, that's Jinx backsprite.
Went as expected? Glad to hear you won the tourney
Freeze man where is the 2nd episode of random battle ladder tournament thingy
Kids these days won't appreciate it but this is an amazing audio-visual quality for those days
If you’re asking for suggestions on future videos, I really enjoyed the doubles random battles to the top - been a while since we saw any of that.
Pls try 35 pokes
A metagame where each month there are 35 random pokemon
This month we have a spotlight ladder!
I didn't know you had a time machine. Cool.
wait, wouldn't rhydon be unable to ohko, since tauros is faster and that's how ohkos work in gen 1?

4:34 they shouldn't be able to horn drill you, because you're faster
Didn't you say you were gonna upload more rb4 ?

We losing sleep with this one
i think nc97 is the worst format of all time lmao
still an entertaining video tho
I know it sounds stupid but I would love to see a game of metronome battle. The meta game is kinda funny even if you dont have control over much.
Objectively the best ruleset
late night pre bed freezai.. bless
Could they have horn drilled Tauros or would it not have worked because rhydon is slower?
Fun video nonetheless, I find gen 1 competitive really interesting
Correct, in Gen 1 all OHKO moves will automatically fail if you are slower than the target.
RIP my boy xurkibruh
I'm playing in this tourney to and had the exact same experience it's so luck based
Seems pretty diabolical 😅
where’s the shared power random battle video?
Horn drill will always fail against faster pokemon.
how do i enter
Title is incorrect no? Shouldn't it be "it went how you'd expect"?
Please bless me with more rblt
I really would not wanna see more of this game mode

it's not that complex lol especially when you consider the lack of IV variance or EV spreads
Honestly this format is garbage
I only play rby tiers and this is the worst format I've ever played
I doubt anyone would argue against that
Worst gen for competitive combined with one of the worst format concepts.

Yeah gen 1 is pretty cursed
Uh, is it just me or is there no audio?
Just you
