    Hi Mitzi, have you read Monica Dickens? (Charles Dickens' grand daughter) if not look her up in the Persephone Books editions. I think talent runs in the genes! 😉

    Fellow Dickens aficionado here, Mitzi! I read Dombey & Son about a year ago, and share your enthusiasm for it. I think, so far, it holds the #2 spot for me. Our Mutual Friend is my top favorite. What stood out to me in Dombey was the beautiful sibling connection between Flo and little Paul. Also little Paul's sweet and picturesque premonitions of death. I agree that it can be helpful to follow the text while listening to the audio. Librovox has a great narrator and is free. This year, I have so far finished Hard Times and Bleak House. David Copperfield is next! Happy reading.

      I still need to read Our Mutual Friend, so now you have me even more excited about it! Florence and Paul ❤such a beautiful relationship in juxtaposition to the other. There are so many of these examples throughout that story. I can't wait to read my next one!!

      Hi Terri! I'm a big Dickens fan too - I love your choices for your favorite Dickens, they aren't the usual picks - but they are definitely great reads.

    Mitzi, I'm so glad you love this book! I struggled with this book a little bit at first, but when I realized it was going to be a long one and I needed to slow down, I really fell in love with this book. I need to reread it! I think I've only read it once or twice. But it's been awhile.

    Dombey and son us so overlooked I'm glad you found it's true worth! Someone who is well read can be anybody! You don't need formal education or degrees to be well read! 🙂. It's because people had such a command of the English language that is why it's a bit of a deal to get through it all and understand all aspects. We do not have a huge vocabulary. But reading these books opens us up to a whole world of expressions!

    I've only read Christmas Carol but I have watched some of the movies and series on tv. I would like to read Our Mutual Friend. The one thing I like about Dickens is the names of his characters. They seem to match the characters exactly. The movie about him writing Christmas Carol showed his process. He would try out those names until he decided on which one would work. He would come to America and receive a hero's welcome. I've got a lot of Authors to get through before I move on to Dickens. I need to read those books I already have. I think Dickens is one of those authors who you need to read a biography of to get to know his motivations. I know about some of his childhood. His father was in debtor's prison. He didn't know a thing about how to handle money. He flitted it away. This affected him from his earliest days.

      Yes! Janelle and I talked a lot about the names of his characters and their meanings as we read. He really thought through these small details to make huge impacts in the story.

    Hi Mitzi, I don't know the story of Dombey and Son, so after your excellent review it is definitely on the top of my reading list. My favourite is also David Copperfield what a great read, cannot go wrong with Dickens

    Kate Howe has definitely mentioned/talked about Dombey and Son, and of course Katie at Books and Things. I like Dickens. Not all of his books, but more than not. =)

    I am a Charles Dickens fan. I loved David Copperfield. I have only read 3 of his works so far, but it is my favorite thus far. My next to read is Little Dorritt. I need to just jump in. Usually when I read a classic, I read lighter books at the same time and just read a chapter a day of the classic. I need to just let it soak in slowly. 😂 The lighter books alongside the classic keep me from feeling bogged down in general with my reading.

      Oh my goodness, once again we think alike! 😂I have Little Dorrit on my nightstand right now!! I haven't started because I'm reading all of these middle grades right now, but yes, I plan on just taking that book one chapter at a time. I think it has about the same amount of pages as Dombey and Son, but 30 some odd chapters instead.

    I just love your reviews! You make me want to read this book! Have you thought about having a reading group (using Zoom) and go through some of the classics that are "hard" to read. Like a chapter per week........Just a thought from one of your subscribers! :I would attend! 🥰

    I've read A Christmas Carol. What would you recommend I read next? I'm somewhat intimidated by his larger novels.

    • @mitzireadsandwrites
      @mitzireadsandwrites  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Great Expectations works best after A Christmas Carol. It's not quite as long as many of the others, so the plot isn't as complex and not as many characters to keep up with, either.
