I will always argue that enabler cards should be what get the axe instead of payoff/win con cards. Amped Raptor and Guide both are enablere, so one of them was the right choice. Banning phlage hurts more than just energy, and honestly shouldn't be banned. If you ban the win con but leave the enablers, then the enablers will still be there to break to next big dumb thing that WotC prints (which, let's be honest, *will* inevitably happen). But if you get rid of them and leave the win cons, then people still get to play the big splashy thing - but it's also harder to break. Using this approach also makes it easier to balance during future creative design decisions - it's a lot easier to remember the big splashy thing you created when designing smaller cards, but it's harder to remember every single cantrip and value card when creating your big new super cool game-winner guy. Also, as I've said in other videos of yours: energy was a mistake and should never have been made. It's fundamentally a bad mechanic *for the game as a whole.*
I'd argue that Raptor is more of a payoff than an enabler, but I do agree that Guide of Souls is a good enabler. I think the issue with Phlage is that it's a card that allows the deck to play a grind game it really shouldn't have. If the deck actually stayed dead to a Pyroclasm, I think it'd be reasonable
@@HPuzzleYT I can see how/why you'd call Raptor a pay-off, for sure. If it didn't generate any energy of it's own I'd agree, but because it both generates *and* uses energy, I think I'd call it an enabler. The size of the body matters here too - if it were a 3/2 or even a 2/3, or bigger, than that would change things significantly - but because it's just a 2/1, it's not exactly going to win the game "on it's own" if it sticks on your side but nothing else does. Phlage, however, is pure win-con. It doesn't help itself do the thing it asks you to do, but it *does* do what *you* ask it to do, and *very well*. Perhaps too well. It's actually, miraculously, simultaneously a win-card *and* a win-more card. Same with Archon of Cruelty. I don't think either card should be banned, but I definitely understand hating both of them.
havent played magic in about 10 years I started playing yu gi oh again maybe a year ago and I picked up magic again about a couple months ago I've been mainly playing black and blue as I did previously the format I play allot in is alchemy
I think old strategies coming back and playing with the new pieces is good for the format. Most of the new pieces (bar from Ragavan or DRCs) that Twin has access to are answer cards. If answer cards are good then that means the format can be kept more in check imo. Basically, the new cards are what the 2015 Modern player would have wanted to have anyway.
They are REALLY good interactive cards, though. And a format having the potential to become a game of "who had more interaction cards in their hand" is dangerous. Not to mention FOMO being an arguably better Pestermite for the deck overall As for 2015 players wanting the new cards, you'd be surprised how much MTG Boomers complain about almost every rare or mythic from Modern Horizons sets lol
@@radicard5193 I mostly agree with both of you. The interaction we have now (aside from the energy cards) are largely the "fair" versions of cards I would want in modern. That said, there is plenty to dislike from the Horizons sets... like the energy cards. 😂
Im not saying you are completely wrong about them trying to get some players back with old cards that they phased out, but I think its way too late at this point and most of those people will not return just because you unban faithless looting. Most of my friends stopped around mh1-2, because it was no longer the modern they recognized but a format that functionally rotated every few years because wizards said so and it killed a fair few decks. I wish nothing but the best for the modern modern-players, but I feel like you may be wrong about them trying to appeal to an old crowd of players, I think they might be trying to make the zoomer players stay with tales of ye olde modern come to life. Also I think the unbans are funny and will be looking forward to watching them in action in streams/videos.
The unbans are funny 100% I think trying to get old players back is one of the goals, but it's incredibly short-sighted and shows a misunderstanding of that type of player Like, you just printed "2015 Jund: The Commander Deck™️" and think they're coming back now? Excited for "Teaching Arena Zoomers about Twin"

as a "boomer" playing twin right now. I can promise you I am slamming the most busted shit into it and laughing at the insta scoops.
Hell yeah, get em

What set are they goign to reprint mox opal in?
It'd be funny if it was Aetherdrift
@HPuzzleYT I doubt the unbanning is about game and more about making that $ can't reprint the One Ring so it makes sense to ban it.
"in a set that it's not for you", probably
@marcoottina654 eh if the set has powerful cards like mox opal it's a set that's for me.

the lack of a writhing chrysalis ban in pauper is bad for the format

Energy is 40+ percent of the meta they already ruined modern
Hey it was like 39% it's healthy!
Funnily enough, 2015 Modern is a fan format for modern. Lol
100%, unfortunately these cards aren't going to make Modern feel like 2015 again lol
pod still suffering from being a card to make midrange decks good... of anything that would be unbanned it should have been pod
Honestly surprised they didn't say "screw it" and unban Pod too
Amped raptor is the new sprinter twin. #freeraptor
