It's always difficult to comment over the lapse of a hundred years, but Mabel's Goldwyn films were always said to be 'commonplace', meaning they were much like any other film of the time. It naturally follows then, that the Sennett films weren't commonplace. This is the same old Mabel, but there does seem to be something missing here, that is found in the Keystone and Sennett Comedies pictures. Call that spark 'It' if you want, but I am at a loss to explain what is absent. Mabel blamed it on poor direction, so maybe the absent element was her favourite director, F. Richard Jones? In any event, the Goldwyn pictures did not diminish her following, and we must feel privileged in being able to view the remaining scraps of Mabel's Goldwyn films. Thanks for posting this video.
