Installing an Auto Changeover Relay in our Motorhome

  • We upgraded our Campervan with an inverter and asked our good friend Geeky Philip come around to help us install an auto switching relay that allows us to use the sockets in the van through the inverter when not on electric hook up. This now allows us to use my coffee machine and Lyndsay's hair straighteners through the sockets in the motorhome when we're off grid and not on electric hook up.

    We've just watched the video and we worked out that the relay was imperative for those life saving devices, a coffee maker and hair
    straighteners.
    Well done Geeky Phil.

    Very informative. I now know that such a module exists off the shelf. I've been making my own and installing them for auto switch over. This is going to make my life much easier.

    Any chance you or geeky phil could identify the wiring pattern? My main question is what goes into pins A and B? I am guessing? that these are positive and negative from the hookup feed? Also with a common ground/negative feed, is 2 pole even needed?

    Hi how many leisure batteys do you have to run the inverter ??

    Hi where did you purchase the inverter, as ive looked online and they dont look anything like the inverter you have fitted

      Our original inverter was cheap and didn’t last so we ended up replacing it with this Victron one from Alpha Batteries www.alpha-batteries.co.uk/victron-energy-multiplus-12-3000-120-16-230v-ve-bus-pmp122300001/

    This is EXACTLY what I am trying to do! And I've learnt about inductive loads...which explains why I was finding an AC load on cables while looking for my turn signals. Are all of your sockets on 1 breaker then? I think mine are split across 2. Next time im on hookup I'll check. Awesome to know all i need is a relay and housing rather than all the expensive kit i've been looking at. Thanks

    Hi i take it that the inverter is man enough to run your Alde heating ??

    • @RoamingRadfords
      @RoamingRadfords  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Alde heating runs straight from the gas and 12v batteries and doesn’t need to use the inverter

      Monty the Motorhome, Great name mate. Geeky Philip isn’t local I’m afraid, but there’s going to be someone local that can help. The inverter install was pretty straight forward, but the relay was a little over my head though.

      @@RoamingRadfords Phil definitely sounds local to me. And he’s right about the parts as I also use R.S components as they only sell quality, safe products, rather than the cheap unsafe crap off eBay which could end up burning out of every kill you. If I require any electrical jobs done on my motorhome Phil is the guy for me
