    I'm 73 yrs old and I remember when this song came out in the early 60's. Their voices were amazing!

    The uncredited soprano is the late Anita Darian, a classically trained opera singer, and her wordless singing helps make the tune what it is.

    The original version of this song was written and recorded in 1939 by a South African man named Solomon Linda under the title "Mbube". It was written and performed in the Zulu language and later written in English by George David Weiss.

      i believe karl denver was the first person to cover it and achieve commercial success? i could be wrong, i have not researched this :) big love to all people :)

      Solomon's sisters have been in a legal fight with Disney over royalties and rights for years.. Disney doesn't want to pay up.. colonizers indeed...

    This is an older party song I remember the sailors and their girlfriends at our house. My dad was a crew chief.

      i was a 12 yr old navy brat when it came out.. we were stationed in Naples Italy .. my dad was a 20 yr boatswain mate..

      I was in elementary school when this cane out too. I remember everytime this came on the radio I would sing along at the top of my lungs! Still love it to this day.

    You should listen to the original old African version by Solomon Linda.......i think you would really enjoy it......a very haunting sound
