    Bob, I've been driving for 32 years and still found this worth watching, and as they say many so called experienced drivers are not as good as they think they are - and I can't rule myself out. I'd really like to see a similar video from you on a busy carriageway though.

    I passed my test in June 2014, I watched hours of your videos and found them more helpful than my own instructor, in the end I purchased an old banger, got my Mom to sit next to me and practiced with her while watching your videos at night for tips, I wish you success and thank you for uploading helping so many people.P.S Been on the motorway a few times now, 1st time I was very nervous, I would recommend people do this Pass+ course just to increase their awareness while on the motorway.

    He’s young, so his reactions are fast and he is instinctively driving. When you are old you realise how crazy motorways are and avoid them altogether ! We are hardwired to take risks when young , it’s a throwback to early evolutionary ways. Chasing after a Bison takes guts.

    Bob I have been driving for 22 years and have only been on the motorway once following a family. I don't like high speeds and only go on carriageways when necessary. I have learnt alot from watching your videos and would have liked you to drive while commenting on all aspects of motoring. Keep up the good work.

    I've recently been recapping a few things, and all the videos on this channel have been very useful. There have even been a few hints and tips which I've never come across before. Just shows how we all continue to learn even after passing our test.
    It's also been interesting seeing how I've developed as a driver over the past few years, when I compare myself to some of your students and seeing them react to some situations in the same way as I used to. With more experience and being able to predict other road users better, it's amazing how easing off the gas early on can mean you avoid a lot of potential situations without having to do much at all.
    Thanks very much for these videos Bob; you seem like a great instructor, and remind me quite a bit of mine. Much respect to your students who agree to be filmed as well for the world to see.
    Safe driving everyone and all the best to those practising for their test.

    I notice that Bradley checks the mirrors but doesn't do any sideways glance before changing lanes or joining the motorway from a slip road. Surely this is important since other vehicles could potentially be in his blindspot.

    The speedo was showing an indicated 80mph at times in this video (16:10), and you seemed to be OK with it. Is it because you're taking into account the 10% added speed manufacturers give to their cars (e.g. 70mph in real life is an indicated 77)? Or is there a speeding threshold? Not criticising, just curious.

    • @TheLlamaFarmer3
      @TheLlamaFarmer3 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jack Cooper On motorways, while the limit is 70mph, it is actually possible to drive at 80mph with very little chance of prosecution as so many people drive at 80 or above. Also I doubt that it's 10% increase. They have to indicate accurately within standardised limits, and when learning to drive my instructor had a separate speedometer that was only ever 1 or 2 mph different from the car's speedo.

    Could be a silly question, but do driving instructors typically use a different/unmarked vehicle when doing Pass Plus lessons? It just strikes me that they'd surely be vulnerable to being pulled over if seen giving motorway lessons in a car with L plates and all the driving school markings?

    • @WildChildFromHell
      @WildChildFromHell 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They use different plates. Usually with a "P" on them, if I recall.

    • @Flossie1985
      @Flossie1985 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They would take the magnetic sign off the roof, possibly liable to flying off anyway at high speed, and any other L plates. Driving school markings aren't going to get them pulled over as the police are aware of drivers doing Pass Plus courses and of the fact instructors will drive their cars on the motorways themselves between lessons.

    I've been driving for 5 1/2 months now and have already done thousands of miles on motorways, but I'm still not 100% confident with them.
    .
    I try and use the left lane as much as possible to avoid being *that* driver hogging the middle lane, but when I do so, I find people appear beside me and so if I'm behind a lorry, I have no way of getting back out into the middle lane. This makes me *want* to hog the middle lane, even though I know I shouldn't...
    .
    Do I really have to keep slowing from 70+mph to 60mph behind lorries in the left lane, just to let other middle lane hoggers past?

    I came on to this to see how people drive. I am 15 and I know how to drive. I have driven land-rover disco 2, honda civic, honda jazz and a jeep (in the uk) IT WAS ON PRIVATE LAND. but it's not too hard. the land-rover was automatic and all the others were apart from the honda jazz which was manual. it was actually surprisingly easy.

      The hardest part of driving is anticipating what other people will do and reacting to it. Wait until you encounter heavy traffic before you say you know how to drive!

    I passed my test in July and been driving about 3 or 4 weeks worth in a Corsa 1.2 but I'm finding some difficulties with how live the car gets the further I speed up to 70 and I'm not holding the centre of the lane if there's a bend in the road because of it. Any advice for this?
    I'm fine with all other aspects of the motorway as I've probably watched 100~ compilations of bad driving and read up on the driving etiquette that way but the car just feels really light at that speed. The odd thing is that it is completely easy at 60 on normal A roads but doing 65 or 70 on the motorway(M8 to Edinburgh) feels like I need to always correct being too close to the left.

    • @TalltallTim16
      @TalltallTim16 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      At high speed the handling of any car changes quite dramatically if this is what you're getting at. I drive the same car as you. When driving on the motorway or at high speed you don't need to turn the wheel as much to change lane. Turning hard or over correcting will result in the car rolling. When driving on motorways its best to try and keep the wheels as straight as possible to prevent the car rolling. If your car pulls to the left or right when accelerating or braking it could be a mechanical issue.

    • @Flossie1985
      @Flossie1985 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, check your tyres. If they're not correctly inflated it could bounce the car around. Also, get the tracking checked. Hitting potholes and kerbs can affect both tracking and tyres and in turn affect the handling of the car.
      Watch out for brakes in the embankments at the sides of the motorway. If you're going through built up embankments which suddenly clear as you go over a bridge or a valley you'll often be hit by a sudden crosswind which will push the car sideways. Look ahead for breaks in embankments shielding you for crosswinds and be ready to keep hold of the car as you reach them.
      Large vehicles create vortexes around them as you pass them. Pass an HGV and the airflow around it will push you away as you're alongside and then pull you in front of it as you move ahead. If you're aware of it and you're ready for it you can be ready to counteract it.
      You can tramline in lane 1 especially as the constant flow of heavy vehicles creates ruts which your car can become stuck in.
      Smaller, lighter cars will move around more than bigger heavier ones. If you ever come to drive a bigger, heavier car on the motorway you will probably find it moves around less.

    hi bob what gear should i be in when entering a motorway is 4th or 5th

    • @clientcentredlearning
      @clientcentredlearning 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would depend on the speed you are travelling at, and the lay of the land, for example if you were pulling uphill and needed power 4th might be better. It is important to let the car tell you what it needs, the most important thing is to match the speed of the traffic already on the motorway and find a gap to work into.

    28 minutes 30 seconds. The driver fails to check if any traffic is coming down the slip road onto the motorway. Too much middle lane driving for no reason. If you hold traffic up doing this - then you may find yourself with 6 points on your license. The middle lane is for OVERTAKING.

    • @clientcentredlearning
      @clientcentredlearning 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +albertosaurus60
      It is perfectly acceptable to use the middle lane if you are gaining on the traffic in the left lane ahead of you, and are preparing to overtake, unless of course (as you point out) you are holding traffic up behind you in which case you would move to the left, allow them to pass and then take up the position for the upcoming overtake. In this instyance Brad was not holding up traffic and had a good reason for staying out.

    • @albertothomasx
      @albertothomasx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, uneccessary lane changes can as dangerous as can driving too fast or too slow. But, please remember, the middle and outer lanes are overtaking lanes. Therefore, before you proceed with the overtake, you need to verify - that the vehicle you're passing has a clear exit ahead. Failure to do this - will result in an accident sooner or later, especially when passing large goods vehicles at junctions or service areas. Many drivers use the middle lane - like they're sitting on a train. The middle lane is the MOST hazardous lane to be in. Unfortunately, your pupil failed to check this VERY dangerous hazard - when overtaking the large goods vehicle at a junction. Most accidents on the motorway - occur near junctions or service areas. Or, in the roadworks. Everybody driving at the same speed is also dangerous.

    • @clientcentredlearning
      @clientcentredlearning 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for that, but I am aware of how it all works, if you listen to the dialogue you will see that we discuss these things.

    • @albertothomasx
      @albertothomasx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Finally, ask yourself or a Policeman if he knows where the blindside is on an articulated lorry? Answer = During the course of its operation, the only clear vision the driver has at ALL times is out of his offside drivers window. (This is providing the vehicle is RHD). Every left turn is blind on the nearside and blind on the offside at the same time. Every right turn is blind on the nearside. The ONLY time a articulated vehicle can see down both sides of the trailer is when it's travelling in a straight line. NEVER drive alongside an articulated lorry at the SAME SPEED. Only pass an articulated vehicle on the motorway or dual carriageway if your road ahead is clear. And only overtake an articulated lorry before or after junctions. Overtaking articulated lorries at junctions - is like playing russian roulette.

      Harder than you think. 99% of drivers don't know when they're driving blind. Drivers on the motorway sit in lanes as if they are sitting on a train. Nearly all the accidents that happen on the motorway - happen at slower speeds.

      albertosaurus60 But motorways are mostly straight roads and don't have the hazards that A roads or town/city roads have. E.g. traffic lights, pedestrians, parked cars, junctions etc. I don't know whether most accidents on motorways happen at slow speeds or not, but they are, by far, the safest types of roads.

      +Collins LFC the driver in this video was driving blind on at least 2 occasions - and quite possibly more. Clearly, you do not understand what I mean by this.

      +Collins LFC oh, and I forgot to mention. This was on an empty motorway. Instructors do not have enough training to teach motorway driving in the UK.
