‘Deeply troubling’: Call for Fatima Payman to separate religion from political party

  • Menzies Research Centre Senior Fellow Nick Cater says Independent Senator Fatima Payman is “free” to set up her political party.
Mr Cater warned Ms Payman must keep her proposed party separate from religion and faith.
“I think what worries me about Senator Payman's idea of what a party should be,” Mr Cater told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“She is free to set up her own party, more the merrier I say, but if she’s going to build her party around Islamism, then that’s deeply troubling.
“Never before in Australia had a political party built around a religion or a faith, that’s a development which none of us want to see.”

In this country, we frown on and make laws about misogyny & homophobia, and yet, a person who sees them as religious obligations together with antisemitism, murder of apostates, separatism, etc gets to be in parliament? What's she even doing in this country?

If she wears the uniform in public, she's saying that she takes her religion seriously enough to put it ahead of everything we value: freedom, democracy, and human rights. As a gay man, this sends shivers down my spine, and I also find myself wondering why more women don't speak up against the religious obligation to be misogynistic.

You simply cannot ask a Muslim to separate religion from politics, it’s not possible. Islam is a whole system of religion, politics, legal system, economics and warfare. It’s a package, and that’s what most people do not understand. Islam is not just a religion.

"Never before in Australia had a political party built around a religion or a faith..."
That's simply false. There was the Christian Democratic Party of Fred Nile, for one.
The problem is not whether a party is built around a religion, but which religion it is built around. The West is built around Christianity. Islam is opposed to Christianity, and therefore to the values of the West, including democracy and freedom and equality.

In Europe they have Christian Democratic Parties.
The federal government since Howard opened the floodgates. They should have foreseen this outcome when high numbers and significantly different cultures were brought in. Social cohesion is severely tarnished in oz.
Relative from overseas forecasted this outcome more than 15 yrs ago. The senator has right to have her party. Our idea of Oz is very different from theirs.

Democracies of any type must be free from religon. As a matter of fact the leaders of democracies in general have to be diligent to keep all their "private" beliefs seperate from their job. To serve millions of people you can not allow your personal agenda to affect your service of the many people that are far different than yourself. It is a very troubling trend that people "suffering" in non democratic countries are drawn to other countries that don't operate in the way their oppressive country does. Then the first goal they take on is to go into politics and make the new country exactly the same as the one they escaped. Canada has Jagmeet and the US has Omar/Mayorkas. Its not surprising that weak-minded people would do this but that weak-minded voters allow it.

    • @PJRayment
      @PJRayment 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

"Democracies of any type must be free from religon"
So they should be atheistic? How self-serving.
The West is based on Christianity. There is no such thing as a democracy free from religion.
"As a matter of fact the leaders of democracies in general have to be diligent to keep all their "private" beliefs seperate from their job."
So what do they base their job's views on? We have laws, such as those against rape, because the Christian view is that rape is wrong. Yes, even our laws are based on religious views.
The issue is _which_ religion is involved. The West, based on Christianity, has brought the most freedoms and been the most successful.

The issue here is - a culture that was at the leading edge of science and mathematics - 1,000 years ago. Retreated into itself. And any issue now is framed around "religion" - that religion - justifies and excuse - the justification of violence towards others.
The islamic culture - you can see as soon as it is challenged - the people - who say they are islamic. Reach for the religious red card. Which seems very much as odds with - how modern secular politics is played out - like labor and the Greens. That they are very much - polar opposites. No-one else is allowed to do this. If a Christian did this - the television media would have a melt down. And that's the lies and falsehoods - you get hit with every time. This is simply how do you lie about - who you really are - and hide from the truth. You throw down the religious red card.
The issue being here - she stood as an Australian citizen - for the Australian Federal Parliament. And yet her personal allegiances lie elsewhere. She should be disqualified from Australian politics.
If she wants to raise issues - of what goes on overseas - then she should go to Lebanon - and if she really believes who she says she is. And take her personal fight - to the place where it's all happening. Labor is to blame for this mess. Labor were the ones - who got involved in talking about the war in Israel. And have only done it - to distract Australians - from how badly their policies are all failing. The problem being - is other people - take this issue - way to seriously. And labor refuses to admit - they always fail - to put candidates that are good - sensible people. They always recruit radicals. And this is what you get. Another person in Australian politics - who thinks she is more important - then the Australian Government - more important then her voters. And you have to consider as a labor candidate - she got a lot of non muslim voters - that's how she got elected. This is what happens when labor ticks - their so called EQUITY boxes - and not recruit people into politics - who have a lifetime - of experience who can really contribute to Australian politics. Labors equity policy is anything but - ABOUT EQUALITY - OR FAIRNESS.
Because once the war in Israel is over - who does she blame then. That's what this is all about. Now she has to accept - her main voters - will be mulsims. As she has taken advantage of ordinary Australians who voted for her.
The issue here - is the clash of culture. In that this person will frame every issue around her religion. That is something that should worry a lot of people. You can't reason with that. They just reach for "THE GOD COMPLEX" and then that's all they will quote. Her job - is to see the Australian Government - wont defend Australians and wont defend Australia.
She is very much a person who should not be in Australian politics. Given she swears an oath of allegiance to Australia. She forgets she is born in Australia - she is Australian first - not her religion first.
