You could do subtraction by 9's complement, but that might be mentally challenging enough to not be worth the time. Although I could imaging using this device daily someone might get quite skilled at negating numbers in their head

Yes actually people used to using adding machines might have been used to doing 9's complements on other devices, so it wouldn't be hard to do it on this one too. Thanks for watching!

Was just considering modeling the one I have which belonged to my father. He would have obtained sometime between early 30's to end of 40's (1900's) in Los Angeles. It has the slide bar clear mechanism on the left edge and lettering on surface is more blockish and smaller. Still has the the base and did also have the stylus which was misplaced. Just by luck though ran across an almost identical alternate but of slightly inferior metal material which was meant to be used for sales price quoting and has lettering etched in. The "spring action for the position of the dial" would probably be considered as a detent. Highly informative nice vid. The following is just meant here as positive constructive criticism but the long slow pan down across the water ending to find device lying there in the undergrowth kind of lost me. It's generally suggested to omit clutter in background when photo opting a specific item. But hey what do I know? Your vid is way beyond my capabilities. Thanks for sharing.

I just bought one at the hamvention for 10 bucks, no stylus but Original stand. These things are great fidget toys

Maybe overshot the "old fogey" vibe a bit in the outro?

The Lightning looks like an update of a device named The Calculator ca. 1917-1922 made in Grand Rapids MI

It was the same company; they moved from Grand Rapids to Los Angeles after WWII

Jaap Scherpius has a video about that called "The Standard Desk Calcumeter"

Pascal is best known for Pascal's Triangle?? Balderdash!! He's known for all sorts of things! He was a pioneer in probability theory, philosophy and theology ( see Pascal's wager), Physics (ever heard of Pascal's Law?), and numerous other mathematics topics.
"In the west Ideas from classical mathematics are generally named after the first white person to take them seriously" More Balderdash! The first person is virtually never the person that something is named after, EVEN IF THEY ARE WHITE. This is such a notorious phenomenon, it's called Stigler's law of eponymy!

@@ChrisStaecker You slander the names of your ancestors in a vain attempt to virtue signal for internet points. You cherish the relics of the past made by the hands of the people you despise, what a sad existence.

Feels like a waste to have those five Pascal adding machines all in the same display case.
Spread the love! Stop showing off, and let some other museums have a go!

Ideas are also named after whoever rediscovers some lost idea or technology; CRT has no place in mathematics

Guess this thing should be named after me then. Or would that be CRT? Hard to tell what is and isn’t these days…
