I’m helping my niece with school and when she needed help with fractions I panicked lol so I came to the youtubes and found this guy. He taught me in 5 minutes what many teachers back in the day tried to teach me, and failed miserably, in whole school years lol. Oh I’ll be back I promise
@@insertnamehere5864 yes, you just have to subtract the two multiplications. So for example 1/4 - 1/3 will be (3-4)/12. So instead of adding 1x3 + 1x4 as seen in the video when adding the fractions, you only subtract them.
I agree with you Anthony. I call this video a good refresher for remebering fractions. I don't recall in any of my school maths classes any teacher say that fractions are meant to teach us logical thinking. School is only good to teach you to learn, expect yu to stay with the curriculum and if you want to really learn, seek help outof school, because school is their to create employees.
I always found math difficult but as I grew older I wanted to learn how. You have made what seemed hard for me to understand refreshingly simple. Thank you.
guys, im smiling so hard right now, i had a rollercoaster of emotions while studying, i decided to search this, and i literally did the maths, and this method is effective, REALLY effective
This is how I have always thought of doing fraction addition but you gave me such a good template to help out my family who are now homeschooling their children. A super concise and plain explanation of something I could hardly put into words. Thank you so much!
its amazing how you can come back after years of dreading maths in school to actually enjoying it and learning a great deal. I remember being a teen in high school and hating going to math class, now after watching your vids and many others, I am fascinated with maths and wish to learn more and more!
When I saw this come up on my feeds I remembered being scared of maths as a kid, consequently being ridiculed by my mum and dad and teachers couldn't help as I was so scared to learn! I'm 45 now, and although I don't have to use much of this in my daily life, I'm going to try to teach myself again, and enjoy the practicals rather than be ruled by fear. Hope it helps the kids out there!
This method is still essentially the same as what I was taught at school with lowest common denominators (LCM) . In the first example, 12 *is* the LCM of 3 and 4. In the second, 15 *is* the LCM of 3 and 5. So I don't really see much difference here. It just bypasses finding the *lowest* common denominator and replaces it with the *easiest* one. This approach could then give you difficulty with for example adding sixths and thirds, the LCM of which is 6, but we would end up with a denominator of 18 and the result would need reducing.
oh my god. i love fractions. especially the metaphor with the pizza between sharing it before ppl. i will be watching this and sharing it on my own. have a great start of the week.
My primary and secondary school consisted of thorough education but teachers never brought this method up. Glad I finally learned this technique 40 years after. Thank you!
So glad I found your channel. My son hated maths in school so am now homeschooling. With your video's im certain he will now be ahead of those actually in the school system!! Thank you!
Your dynamic math shortcuts are genius. The only thing I've seen that even approaches your insights was some "Vedic" math in a book called "The Daring Book for Girls." I wish I'd had your tutorials when I was going to school, 1959 - '71.
thank you so much for being such a great sport and realizing that multiple people need help but dont know how to ask , around last year i had a 42 in my math test and now i have 99 you have helped me alot and my teacher thinks you are amazing keep up the good work!
Thank you so much. I was peppering for exam and didn’t know how to do it fast because I was sick when we were taking notes. This should help me in the exam. Fingers crossed 🤞
Thank you ! If only I had you as My maths teacher all those years ago ? I wouldn’t have been such a maths failure! Love you maths lessons! My 10 year old isn’t that keen on maths but actually enjoys your lessons 👍
Thanks you I love this video I gonna subscribe to your channel and now use this to answer math questions not like many other channels like maths antics he is trash talking and you just smack bang let us work it out thank you man you helped me a lot with this very easy method and the people who put thumbs down nun uh this is great and soo good and specific! Nice man everybody subscribe now and like this guy is good!
I stared at this for a couple of seconds. Then I wondered why I was so rough with fractions. Then I remembered one almost never sees fractions like these nowadays; it would be 0.25 and 0.33 and so on.
THANK YOU SO MUCH I WAS STRUGGLING WITH FRACTIONS AND I FORGOT HOW TO ADD AND OUR TEACHERS MADE US DO ALL THESE STEPS BUT THEN I LOOKED UP HOW TO ADD FRACTIONS AND U POPPED UP SO I CLICKED AND U HELPED ME SO MUCH
My guy taught me how to do this in 5 minutes and 30 seconds and i ACTUALLY learned while my online class in math is about 1 hour and literally didnt understand a single thing
I needed a helpful trick to do math portion on my HESI, damn time restrictions. Tryin to find the common denominator wastes time. This is tremendously useful.
Now that I use this idea of yours, I totally forget the old way I was shown. Yet it's the very same way, but was way more redundant and time consuming. Now, it's just do the bowtie and then multiply the bottom numbers together, then add the top numbers you first multiplied. This is by far the best way to master fractions. Great Teacher Sir. Especially a Free Teacher's Education at that.. -:))
How have I never thought of this?? Like, I already did it (multiplaying the lower ones) but i usually divided it by the lower ones again to see the increase ratio, and I feel lime I kinda knew it but when I thought over doing it it felt different... idk...
Delighted to watch your video. This is the refresher lesson I needed , thank you Josh. This vey useful to any viewer that is concerned about their numeracy skills.
Thank you very much this video literally made my skills in solving fractions improve. However how would you instantly add and subtract mixed numbers instantly?
This works with relatively prime numbers in denominators. Let's say we have 1/14+1/6. We're going to try and make the denominators relatively prime. We choose the greatest common factor of denominators, 14 and 6, which is 2. We divide the denominators and the do the trick in the video. Then we multiply the denominators with the GCF again. Done. Example: 1/14+1/6 = 1/2 × (1/7+1/3) = 1/2 × *(3/21+7/21) --> the trick* = 1/2 × 10/21 10/42
I just want to say. I dropped out of school when I was 15. I’m now 22 and re taking my exams to get a job. For someone who never understood at school you’ve really helped me. My exams in 32 days and I’m so nervous! But your helping me a lot. Thank you!

It is the same method - it just points out the short cut possible - which heaps of people do not see. Thanks for the comment :)
Yes true, that's why it's best to know both ways so we can choose according to the situation :)
