The freckling is apparently a manufacturer error from that particular batch! The creator of this sketchbook responded to a video review of it saying he was super upset by it and had contacted his manufacturer as soon as he found out. He said it should be fixed in the next batch-- which I just received mine today! I assume they did quality testing on it but he said if this problem shows up a second time they'll be switching factories. I don't use watercolour so I can't update you but perhaps that info might help you decide if you want to try it again!
I wasn't aware that they had come to the conclusion of a bad batch-- that's very good to know! I hope that ended up being the case because it was just a very odd reaction all around 😅 I probably won't be purchasing an illo sketchbook again regardless, but I really appreciate the info! I hope you enjoy your sketchbook, too!
i kind of envy your skill of making all the pages look aesthetically or composition vise very appealing, my sketchbook is just like black marker scribbles, taped in doodles from class and occasionally a colored sketch, possibly because im more of a digital artist and if i sometimes make illustrations in traditional, i take a proper watercolor page i guess lmao.

Wow, I've never felt this way watching any other sketchbook tour video prior to yours. I've been looking for artists that really inspire me, whose art feels more like my liking and what I can look up to and be like "yes this art style I love so much! How can I learn from this person, what do they do in their art that I love so much and how can I take that and create my own art in my own personal way?"

This is such a wonderful sketchbook, and I'm definitely going to benefit from your advice about reducing pressure by focusing on the overall spreads. Yours look lovely. Seeing Fruits basket on here was such a pleasant surprise !
A very similar brand too to the illo sketchbook is Denik, very similar paper except I’ve never had any issues with freckling and the paper can take a beating. And a plus is their cover are designed by artists they find and they even send some of the profits to different countries to help build schools
I thought the freckling thing happened because I wasn’t using watercolors correct, so I spent hours trying to find how to fix it! Glad to find out that it’s just possibly my illos 😂

Love how colorful this is! And so many illustrations! Also, I thought about it, maybe the freckling comes from areas where you used a rubber before? So the paper might be torn beforehand and freckles.
thank you thank you!! and while erasing might contribute to the freckling, sadly that is not always the case. some of the freckling I showed in the video was just watercolor swatches, where I hadn't previously drawn on the paper at all ):
The way you work with watercolours and what I assume must be Gouache or acrylics is really inspiring! I’m afraid of my gouache cause it’s seems so unforgiving, but you do it so beautifully that I’m now determined to try as a New Years resolution ♥️

thank you so so much!!! gouache is actually quite forgiving -- because you can reactivate it with water, but also layer it opaque like acrylics, its very easy to adjust or fix anything! I am not a fan of acrylics but I have very quickly grown to love gouache. I hope you try the medium! 💖💖

I love the way your sketchbook layouts look! I personally love the illo sketchbooks and haven’t had any issue with the freckling though I didn’t buy one from the batch that had trouble.

AHHH I'M SO GLAD THIS IS FINALLY UP!!! Your sketchbook is so colorful and I love how nearly all the white space gets used up by the art!! I hope my sketchbooks will one day look as pretty as yours *A* (also omg you went through it so fast! I started mine in July and I think I've only filled like 20 pages..seeing how many pages I have left is incredibly daunting lol). And I love the idea of using a makeshift washi tape tab on your swatch sheet to make it easier to pull out from the pocket; I'm gonna start doing that now :o

I think I did it with a previous sketchbook? I can't remember but its sooo helpful!

your spreads are amazing! those rock lee and gaara illustrations honestly hit a little different for me since those are a couple of my favorite characters lol
I also enjoyed what you were saying about not being stressed about what is going into this book because thats something I usually struggle with when practicing with different mediums. loved this video

since i use more than 2 pages of me sketchbook a day, a 60 page sketchbook is not much for me. normally go for a 100-150 page one. it lasts the same amount of time as that 60 page. one did for you. IG it just depends on how much you draw.

Ahh despite the supposedly bad “freckling” or what not, all the drawings in here are absolutely amazing and your videos inspire me to keep drawing in my own sketchbook, which happens to be the Illo sketchbook. I have not been having the same issues, but your art is still so amazing with them. 💗❤️✨ love you so much

I sent you a message on instagram for no reason but to be kind. Seriously I've got no clue why I sent it lol
I was really turned off by the fact that when my sketchbook came and I flipped through it, I noticed that a handful of the pages were sometimes glued together to another page (but only near the part where all the pages connect) and so I always had to rip them apart and it would leave a weird mark. That problem was on the first page and so my first page was messed up :( but in rating this sketchbook, it’s a solid 7/10 just because I like how the paper is thick and VERY smooth. I love smooth sketchbook paper because my pencil has a sort of “creamy” look on the paper and I was very happy with that! But I wouldn’t recommend using B pencils too dark on the paper because it will leave a mark on the side next to it (you know, when you close the sketchbook)

I just watched your video & your art give me an inspiration to finished my sketchbook. It only has few pages left. Btw, I enjoyed watching this video and your sketchbook is amazing. 😄
You're art is super nice, one problem I've seen with the sketchbook is the paper is smooth so the ink doesn't soak up like it should, so you have to be careful when using markers, at least that's my problem, every time I use my markers the ink smears, so I've noticed you have to be careful with that.
I see illo sketchbooks everywhere and I’m tempted to get them but they aren’t acid free arg. Also I clicked on your vid because the drawings were cute and I like cute things I wasn’t expecting to subscribe but your video is nicely put together so I did.

Did anyone notice the main anime Fruit Basket? Or is it just me
I’m fairly certain that sketchbook is not mixed media. It seems to be for dry medium and ink, but not marker nor water.
illo's website specifically says "great for all drawing mediums" on the description of the sketchbook itself, although I agree that its not really a mixed media sketchbook since the paper is so thin
tirameowsu True. I just noticed a lot of people have been disappointed that it doesn’t handle watercolor well (anymore; I suppose it did once?). They are either having issues, or they’ll have to change their description a bit.
@@yorutsumetai I had someone else comment on this video saying that this batch's sketchbooks supposedly had a manufacturing defect, hence the freckling and other small weird occurances in using watercolors. supposedly that is fixed with the most recent batch? but I'm not sure of that myself. I know thinner papers don't handle watercolor well, and all things considered, I'm impressed with how much water with paper took, but the inconsistencies really threw me off so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
tirameowsu I feel you did well and it performed really well over all, despite that. I just had the thought that that might be the problem, but now I’m not so sure. I also hope I didn’t come across as rude. Are you going to try the other batch, or was this sketchbook just not for you?
@@yorutsumetai well thank you! if the paper had consistently freckled and acted strange I would've assumed the paper just wasn't meant to handle wet mediums, but since it was only about half of the time, it became frustrating after a while. and no worries, you didn't come across as rude at all! if I ever try out another illo sketchbook, it probably won't be for a while. I prefer sketchbooks with heavier and textured paper. maybe in the future I'll give it another shot!

better art supplies don't make you any better of an artist, and practice makes perfect!! just keep drawing and you'll be constantly improving 💫
i know you werent asking me but-
if you are looking into markers, ohuhu brush markers are amazing i would reccomend the 48 set because it is cheaper and includes a good variety!
Once you get a little better with alcohol markers the hobby lobby brand Masters touch markers are incredible!! (Almost as good as copics in my opinion) Where i live they are half off every other week!
Watercolors-
Koi watercolors 12 set is inexpensive and good quality for beginners. Personally i love the water color brushes with a compartment for water.
fineliners- you will want something water proof like a small set of microns.
sketchbook- illo is the BEST! but you can make awesome art with anything i started with canson xl mix media paper.
the supplies dont make the artist though!! ❤️
on the 2nd page of your sketchbook i thought i saw some REALLY similar characters then i saw the orange cat in the bottom and knew that kyo and tohru from fruits basket.

do... do copic markers not bleed? i use winsor newton promarkers and they show on the other side :
copics do bleed! every time I used them in this sketchbook, they bled to the other side. a lot of my color in this sketchbook is watercolors or water based pens 😊

So a while back I was talking with my dad and I was telling him how I was excited about finishing my sketchbook soon and he said “is finishing the sketchbook the goal?” And I was like yeah kind of and then he said “shouldn’t the objective be to make good art?”
And I think some of you should hear that
I think the objective of a sketchbook shouldn't be about making "good art" either, because that can be a very toxic mindset and can really inhibit an artist when it comes to sketchbook work. a sketchbook should be a place where you're comfortable with trying new things and playing with concepts and ideas, rather than feeling the need to only create art that you deem presentable.
@@tirameowsu Oh. I didn't mean that at all, oops! I should have worded it better, I meant that your sketchbook is about you enjoying yourself and your art and getting to see you grow, and that worrying about the amount of sketchbooks you have filled or how you can never finish any doesn't really matter as long as you love what you're doing. in "make good art" it doesn't mean "don't draw unless you end up with the mona lisa" just, make art you enjoy and don't worry about the pages left in the sketchbook
