This is one of the greatest stories of all time. Two things. 1. You know that beer was involved in this plan. A lot of it. 2. This story proves that there is no problem so large that it cannot be solved by the proper application of high explosives.

Being an Oregonian I’ll say I’ve seen many vids on this. Doug Brazil was the rookie photog who shot the film and he said there was a mist of blubber and goo that covered everyone and everything in the vicinity. The smell was horrendous. KATU had paid to fly him and the rookie reporter Paul Linnman in a small plane from Portland to the coast for the story. When they flew back later that day, the smell made the pilot very sick. 😂

The funny thing is, this isn't even the only time a whale was blown up in and/or around Oregon.
December 24th, 1941. A B-25B Mitchell piloted by Charles Ross Greening of the 17th Bombardment Group was doing a sub patrol 200 miles from the mouth of the Columbia river, where they came across something in the water. They got visual confirmation of the object: a dead whale. However, with the mindset of 'better safe than sorry', they decided to drop their full 3000 pound bomb load on it just to be safe. Obviously, it wasn’t a sub, and they just blew a dead whale to smithereens. Low on fuel, they headed back to base in Pendleton, Oregon, documented the patrol, and went on with their day. These men would later be recruited by Jimmy Doolittle for the Doolittle Raid, the first retaliatory bombing of Japan.

Legend has it that while they were setting up, an actual military trained demolitions engineer showed up and warned them that 1. That was too much and 2. They were not shaping the charge to make sure it blew all out to sea instead of, oh, half into the spectators. He was, of course, told to get lost by the construction workers who were trying to get the hell away from an eight ton rotting corpse as fast as possible.

The stench inducing chunks, particulate, and mist was effectively spread out over quite the radius like the fallout from a nuke.

The original clip, they still had to use tractors to get most of the whale off the beach, even had a quip about they had expected the birds to finish off the small pieces(not so much as noted a car was wrecked by the "small" pieces) the explosion would have left behind but were scared off by the inadequate explosion.

Having just watched another video on this very event, there's a comical twist to the story. Apparently, the smashed-in car belonged to an explosives expert who stopped by, by pure coincidence, to advise the DoT on the amount of explosives needed to be used depending on whether they wanted to simply yeet it or vaporize it. They chose otherwise.

i thought this was gonna be about the time a b-25 dropped a 1000lb bomb on a dead whale during a patrol, keep in mind this b-25 and its crew were one of the 16 to participate in the doolittle raid, that guy dropped a bomb on a whale because he thought it was a sub, he used the most advanced bombsight in the world at the time to blow up a whale,
