Each act of the ballet draws on one of Virginia Woolf's best-loved novels - Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves - as well as extracts of her autobiographical writings, to capture her unique way of representing the world.
Wayne McGregor’s ballet triptych Woolf Works, inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf, met with outstanding critical acclaim on its premiere in 2015, and went on to win McGregor the Critics’ Circle Award for Best Classical Choreography and the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. The Observer described it as ‘a compellingly moving experience’; for The Independent it ‘glows with ambition… a brave, thoughtful work’; The Guardian concluded that ‘it takes both McGregor - and the concept of the three-act ballet - to a brave and entirely exhilarating new place’.
Each of the three acts springs from one of Woolf’s landmark novels: Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves - but these inspirations are also enmeshed with elements from her letters, essays and diaries. Woolf Works expresses the heart of an artistic life driven to discover a freer, uniquely modern realism, and brings to life Woolf’s world of ‘granite and rainbow’, where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. Woolf Works was McGregor’s first full-length work for The Royal Ballet, and saw him reunited with regular collaborator Max Richter, who provides a commissioned score incorporating electronic and orchestral music. - บันเทิง
I've seen this wonderful choreography yesterday night( at the cinema ) and i'm still shocked by the dancers' perfection, and Alessandra Ferri for hers humanity and intensity...that made me cry for the emotion. The entire show was amazing!!
Everything about this choreography seems so perfect~ McGregor's gorgeous choreography, Richter's dreamy music, the amazingly talented dancers, and of course, the source of inspiration... I'd love to watch it... Is there any way I can find the full choreography, on line or in cinemas? Thank you!

The only Woolf I find palatable is "A Room of One's Own" which is brilliant. I must have missed something because I find her novels dull. Oh well. At least this ballet is lovely.
I've watched the ballet at cinema on 8/02 - boring music, chaotic choreography, awkward costumes - this all performed by exquisite, genious dancers! That was my impression, sad
looks cheap. I can imagine Virginia rolling in her grave seeing this. Forsythe did a wonderful simple work called Wolff Phrase. that had power with just two dancers and two microphone stands. one can see that McGregor tries to hard to impress.
have you actually watched it? the full piece is breathtaking (in my opinion of course, you are free to have your own), and i think the way in which Wayne approached the work actually allowed for the dancers to explore more of her novels, and therefore show more of who she was as a person. it may look "showy" to some, but to me in order to match the vibrancy and vividness of her writing, and also to emphasise the feeling of the movements in different points, the scale of the production lends itself beautifully to the concept.
