Austin is a place to live in your 20's. They have built the city as things to do which is a youthful lifestyle. Small downtown apartments, bars and stylish restaurants. Once people starts to grow up and have families and age out of the bar scenes, they realize there's little that core Austin offers for them post age 35.

We left Buda, just South of Austin, in 2021 after seeing the future writing on the wall. One had to make a reservation to dip in Hamilton Pool by that time, traffic was already a nightmare, and there was no stop to the daily influx of non-Texans. My property taxes increased by over 50% in a single year, which I’m not even sure is legal. Woke politics let just as many homeless as home-buying newcomers into the city and surrounding towns. It became too weird. We went back to small town Texas where hardly anyone wears face diapers, people are more cordial, our kids are not exposed to the mind virus of Leftism, and politics are as straight as the politicians.

I’ve lived in Austin since 1990. I’m a small business owner as well. I’ve been in the same business since 2000. I hope people are leaving, the mass influx has ruined this city in many ways. The cost of doing business and living is just stupid, the crime rates are through the roof. Homeless people are everywhere. “Live “ music is all but gone, except for a few venues that charge ridiculous ticket prices to see a concert. For example, I have a wife and child and can’t get into a major concert for less than $1k. Stupid. Another huge problem is homogeneous political representation on City council. Austin, as a city is certainly more liberal than anything else, but the residents are pretty mixed. Some conservatives, a lot of libertarians, and or course democrats. But city council representation is always pretty much 100% liberal. So high taxes…like higher than all the liberals that vote for them. It’s terrible. Traffic is also unbelievably bad. Period. And finally, some of the worst school systems you will ever deal with. I have a teen anger who unfortunately was put into the AISD. This year we will be pulling her from this system and homeschooling. If I didn’t already have so many roots put down in this city, I would leave as well. And I would never recommend to anyone looking for a nice place to live to come to Austin. And just to push back a little on this lady in the video when she says the people here are super creative and fantastic…no. Just no. The city USED to be that way. Now people are just average big city jerks. Way more aggressive than it used to be. These days you can’t even head down to the entertainment district ,4th-6th street , without risking being shot.

Extreme weather (extreme heat/drought, extreme ice storms, extreme allergies) extreme politics, extreme Californiacation, extreme property taxes and extreme cost of living are killing Austin. 10-15 years ago, people would just act like they’re living in the Bay Area. Now Bay Area actually came and took over the city and ruined any coolness factor that was left.

Grass is uncut and everything looks like it hasnt been touched in years. To each his own as it doesnt bother me its just different. Same for Dallas, Houston, San Antonio etc, etc. Economic growth in a way destroys the old world cities.
I have seen changes in Austin in the last 10 yrs. Nevertheless, people still moving here everyday in my neighborhood from out of state. Tennessee, Alabama, New York, California, Maine. To name few. I recognize their car number plates. Only people moving out are the elderly. High taxes and city water and sewage charges are too high to stomach. Suburbs are ok but commuting into work is no fun - try commuting from Dripping Springs or Manor in the morning into Austin. That will change your mind in a hurry about living out in these suburbs. Ok if you work from home. But that is change also.

Add very high humidity to the heat, Billions of Blood Thirsty Mosquitos, the proliferation of guns in Texas, there not being any beaches within hundreds of miles and the prospect of being charged with murder for drinking an herbal tea to end a pregnancy, and Texas leaves a lot to be desired. And while it’s fun to head on out 6th street to ck out the music scene every once in awhile, there really isn’t much to do in Austin. I lived there back in the 1980’s when Austin really was a nice place to live still. Not anymore!

Austin will most likely follow any number of big cities that are the capitals of their states. The downtown will economically decline, the government will become increasingly statist/liberal/communist, and the state government increasingly hostile to the rest of Texas.
And of course, the universities in and near Austin and their communistic outlook will contribute greatly to this.

@choatican it is not a suburb! That is the most ridiculous comment! You are clueless! Economically miniscule? It's a principal city in the 4th largest metro area in the country. I guarantee you It's Economic base is greater than Austin's

That’s the liberals fault too. Even though conservatives have been driving for over 30 years..last dem governor was Ann Richard’s…who was she ..all negatives continue to be blamed on liberals. It works for them. It keeps their lie going.

Lived in Austin from '93 to 2021 and moved to San Antonio. San Antonio is a bigger city, easier to get around, lower cost of living, although not 'cheap' either. I could sense Austin was losing its culture ~ 2015-2021; out-of-touch local government WRT taxes and spending, severe spike in housing/rents; more people moving to ATX and not just over-paying for older homes, but demolishing the structure and over-building much larger homes; over-crowded roads that were designed in the early 70s; long-time, beloved establishments closing their doors. Go to Central Austin (old Austin) and all you see now are "mixed-use" and over-priced eateries.

Precisely. How is San Antonio - is it still San Antonio or is being gentrified into Austin 2.0? Same question about San Marcos. Pilot in Houston who may be transferred to that area as my "base" of operations. Thanks!
