    Alright I took the MK2i diving today. I am a complete newb when it comes to diving. I ordered this Wednesday which was also the day I was doing my last two certification dives. Today was my first day of just diving and first time I've ever used a dive computer. I got it Thursday and took it to the gym and started it getting set up the way I like it. Charged it to 100% and took it to gym Friday and went over the instructions for the diving part and got all the diving set up. Recorded my 11 mile mountain bike ride with it on Saturday. The whole thing seemed overwhelming when I first got it but once I got used to navigating using the buttons and got the menus organized the way I want it was easy. Did a 20 minute 20 foot dive today focusing on buoyancy practice and getting to know this device. Surfaced and then did a 10 minute 45 foot dive just checking things out underwater. I wear 1.5x readers and found the screen easy to see at 80% backlight but am turning it up to 100% from now on. It gives the option to turn off the up scroll button but I found myself using it more so am leaving it on and used both the up a down to navigate the menu while diving. Since I am so new to diving I don't know what else to say other than I found it very easy to use and I am looking forward to getting the transmitter. I love all the details this thing gives me for all my activities and I feel like I have only scratched the surface. Whats most impressive is after all this activity and playing with the watch quite a bit it still stays it has 12 days of battery time left off that one charge. The only thing I would change is make it touch screen so I don't have to use buttons to navigate. In sum: if you want to dive to the Titanic in the morning and summit Everest in the afternoon with a stop at the gym in between then this watch has you covered.

      Wow!! Thank you for the very detail and comprehensive comment on your first few days with the Descent Mk2. Great to hear from a user that has found it easy to use, and as you say, the depth of what it covers is just extraordinary!
      Good luck with all of your scuba, and hope you continue to enjoy it as much as we do..!!!

    Thanks for the reviews. I've been shopping for a new smart watch because I do a bunch of outdoor activities and just started diving so the MK1 was appealing so as not to have separate devices. I wear reading glasses so didn't purchase yet due to your comments on the size. I actually had my last two open water cert and Nitrox dives scheduled for today. I opened the computer to read the news with my morning coffee before I left for the dives and a notice for this review showed up. Watched it and ordered the MK2i. Pricey indeed but I figured buy once, cry once. It should be here by Friday and I am going mountain biking Sat and diving Sun so will be able to put it through its paces this weekend. Thanks again for the reviews.

    Very good first review. Thank you!
    I have the MK1 today and plan to upgrade to the MK2 or MK2i.
    I have a question. On the MK2i, if you do not have paired an transmitter, what is shown on the screen while in dive mode? Is the section with the tank display left blank, or is it used for some other information, or is the section removed so the display then looks like the one on the MK2? That would be very valuable for me when deciding which model to choose...

      Hey buddy - glad you found it useful. I'm afraid so - the T1 pod is proprietor to the Descent due to the sonar technology. The T1 can only be used with the Garmin and only the Garmin can only connect to the T1. I did do a separate video in the T1 transmitter and also a video on dive data screens. I used to have a MK1 and I loved it apart from I couldn't use the watch as a daily smart watch, because I am a professional skydiver and every single time I jumped out of a plane, the watch locked into a dive mode after free falling for about 5000ft. The fast rate of decent the fast rate of increased pressure) the watch couldn't handle. Once locked into the dive mode it took several button combination to reset and to get out of the dive mode. I talked to Garmin about it and they couldn't really help me, except taking this beautiful watch back off me. It surprised me that this watch couldn't handle the skydive situation, because it has a parachute mode as well. But of course parachuting ans skydiving(freefall for a longer time) are two different things. And of course how many Garmin customers are divers/freedivers and skydivers at the same time? Probably not many really. But I would love to know if the MK2 can handle this now and if it does, I would buy one straight away again. Not sure if anyone can give me an answer here. By the way, after the MK1 didn't work for me, I talked to Suunto about their D5 in regards of my problem at the BOOT exhibition show in Düsseldorf Germany last year and they took and tested the D5 in a pressure chamber to simulate a rapid increase of pressure (what would happen on a skydiving decent) in front of my eyes. It all looked good and I bought a Suunto D5. Guess what? After my first skydive decent the D5 went into a locked Dive mode as well. So it didn't work either. : ((

      For a while I always assumed the fenix was all anyone ever needed in a watch and assumed diving would be included as a software upgrade with the 100M depth limit. Come to find out the MK2i is really that watch but before i drop twice as much as the fenix I’m making sure it has everything I want. While I don’t skydive now I can imagine that will be on the plate eventually. I really hope that lock out problem has been resolved

    The only thing they've missed on this watch is that it's only rated to 100m, the Teric is rated to 200m. I have a Fenix 6x and a Teric and two pods for the Teric. I would love to change to the Mk2i but that depth rating is a concern to me as a technical mixed gas diver.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Mark - yes, I do get that. There will be a number of hardcore tech divers that won’t like the depth rating.
      Does seem strange they didn’t match the Teric - I mean if you’re going to pack all that into a device then you may as well cover off all bases.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Tristan - thanks for the question. This one has actually popped up already, and was able to get a clear response on the matter.
      The Pulse Oximeter can be set so that it is on permanently, however, it only takes readings when the user is static (so during rest periods or through the night during sleep). Whilst I do understand that Apnea is relatively low impact, I'm not sure it will be classed as low enough as rest for a reading to occur. I believe the best it will offer is for the user to be able to take a reading during a rest period after the dive. Hope that helps?

    Great Review!! More I thought about it, there is a lot of dated dive computer tech. It holds it's value because we have so few options, not because the tech is modernized. For example, aqualung i550c is 2016 tech, still sells full retail in 2020. Even the suunto designs are dated. Hopefully this product makes some waves. I think I would use it everyday except when cycling. I'd hate to fall and destroy it.

      As that’s it - will be really interesting to see what the competitors now do to stay current with the ever changing evolution in technology. Really exciting start to what could be a great few years in development.

I based my decision on great consistent reviews, excellent smartwatch, outdoors and DC in one gadget. The only downside so far that the sleep sync takes about 2 hours!! I opted not to buy the transmitter. Unless you are a divemaster or diving with a buddy whom you need to keep an eye I don't think you really need it as you still have to carry the SPG? Is it worth upgrading from the Mk1 if air integration is not an issue?

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a really great question, and one I've had a few times actually... If you're happy with the Mk1 then no, I'd say stick with it.
      If we ignore the AI aspect, I found the Mk1 display to be too small because of the larger bezel. The Mk2 eradicates that so for me the upgrade was def worth it.
      Then there is the firmware to consider. The Mk1 is based on the Fenix 5, while the Mk2 has the same DNA as the Fenix 6, so lots more capabilities, health features, better maps, better smartphone integration etc.
      If it's just used for diving and the Mk1 is fine for you then stick with it. If you use the watch all the time out of the water then certainly consider the upgrade for everything non diving!

      @BlackMantaPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Similar but different is the best way to describe it I think. Garmin have used their own technology from their marine world to incorporate the sonar/subwave into the transmitter. I never used the Lynx but as aware of the sonic connection they used as locator beacon.
      The difference here is the Mk2i uses the sonar technology to transmit the air integration capabilities.

    Any thoughts or insights into the reported audible sonar noise every 4 seconds from the transmitter? It's the only thing stopping me from committing to this unit. Supposedly Garmin's solutions of reducing the power setting on the transmitter or rerouting it via an HP hose does little to remedy the issue.

I'm heading out on a trip in a couple of weeks and will be paying particular attention to see if I can hear it, so either I'm deaf underwater, or the issue is so small it's droned out by ambient underwater noises...? Hey buddies, How does Battery Change Cost for Garmin Mk2 ? Is it User Changeable?

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Patrice - the battery in the Mk2 is not user changeable. It would need to be replaced by Garmin or an authorised dealer. I don't have any details on the cost to do this, but I wouldn't expect it would need to be changed for a number of years in line with most other Garmin products. In most cases the battery would outlast the use of the product - meaning you'd be more likely to upgrade/replace before you needed to change it. Hope that helps?

      Good question. Boat mode is essentially the same type of thing you would use for running. If you were on a boat and open the app it gives you your speed in nautical metrics, and relevant land speed.
      However, if you download ‘Boat Data’ from the Garmin IQ store you can connect your Mk2 to the chart plotter on the boat and see the data on your Mk2.

    Hey there. Thank you for the video I am on the search of a diving computer. Just got my certifications and can’t wait to keep diving. My questions is regarding the air integration. If you decide to use AI. Do you still need the SPG, I know SPG is used to test your second stage before diving. But with AI how do you test your second stage. Did I miss something in your video? Thank you for the help.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there, glad you found the video useful and good luck with your new diving adventure!
      It’s a good question, and one that pops up time to time.
      AI should be seen as an add on benefit and not as a replacement to an SPG.
      An SPG is a reliable source to know the gas contents of your tank, and would be used in the case that anything happens to your dive computer, transmitter or AI connection.
      If your dive computer failed, or the connection dropped out, or even if the transmitter blew an o-ring or it was knocked/broken, then you have the reassurance of seeing real time tank readings. Although these cases are few and far between, they really do happen - I’ve seen them happen, and even had a dive computer fail on me during a dive.
      I can’t make you dive with an SPG, but I would strongly advise you have one as part of your standard scuba kit.
      I hope that helps to answer your question 👍🏻

    So putting the price aside you will take the MK2i over the Teric?
    I really can't decide, I'm not going to wear it as a watch much out of the water so I just can't decide on if it's worth an extra 1000 AUD for the watch and transmitter when the teric does everything I need it to for diving.
    On the other hand the Garmin has a lot more packed into it but I doubt I'll use all the extra features as my phone is always in my pocket. 🤷‍♂️
    HELP? 🤣

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know Dylan - it really is such a dilemma!!
      Honestly? Hand on heart I would take the Mk2i over the Teric.
      The Teric was the one to beat, and no matter how hard others tried it always held its crown. The thing is Garmin have listened to all the feedback from divers on the Mk1 and delivered.
      Diving wise, the Mk2 does everything the Teric does - and more!! Add to the mix the technology behind the T1 transmitter and you have yourself a clear winner.
      I’m not a massive sports junkie - I go for a run every now and then, but even I find all the other features really handy. The smart watch features are great, and yes, like you I always have my phone with me, but always now find myself looking at notifications on my watch father than picking the phone up to see if it’s a message I need to reply to.
      The customisation features are far superior too!
      I don’t work for Garmin, nor am I sponsored by them in any way shape or form - my view is my own as is my opinion.
      If you’re asking for my advice, invest the extra money and get the Mk2i.
      It’s looking better, has better battery, does more stuff than you could imagine, and will be on your wrist for years because I can’t see it being beat any time soon.
      I know there is a strong love affair for Shearwater out there - I was one of those people, but honestly mate you will be amazed at what you can do with it.
      I will be doing a comparison video between the 2 - had planned to have it done by now - but a house move has delayed it so will hopefully be sometime in the new year now.
      But to save you waiting - get the Garmin, because that’s what I’ll be say in the vid..!

    Feels like the Garmin MK2i is the Jack of all Trades Master of None!
    I am currently looking to buy a dive computer and the money is absolutely burning a hole in my pockets right now. I was so interested in the Teric that I pretty much thought it as a done deal. Then I start reading about the Mk2I and the opportunity to buy this versus the Teric had me confused, then I watched your video and I think I made up my mind.
    It's the Teric for me. I like the Garmin but it just seems like it's trying to do to much and not doing any of them really well. I have read the runners reviews on the MK2 and they are very mixed but my main interest is diving and in that regard the Teric seems to still be on top. The Sonar and multiple AI units might have been the game changer but honestly the price of the watch plus each transmitter is just ridiculous to go past getting just one.
    My main gripe is that the MK2i just contains too much stuff in all those menus and that may be great for the person who is into a ton of activities and also a techno file but for people that want it mainly for Diving the Teric has a much more intuitive Interface and a much better screen. Plus it's a tested design with a great reputation. I do think your right that Shearwater has got to up their game with a Teric 2 that at least has GPS and Maps built in. The battery life could be better with Teric but honestly both of the watches are just way to big to wear on my hand everyday. So in the end I am pretty sure I am going to pull the trigger on the dedicated tool and not get one that does two dozens things and might not do any of them well.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks for the detailed comment - it’s really well put.
      I don’t really argue with anything you’ve said - the Teric is without doubt one of the best DC’s out there.
      I get what your saying about the Mk2 trying to do too much, but once you get used to the menu system you actually realise it is pretty intuitive and easy to use.
      Diving wise it will do everything the Teric will do and more, but if you’re only going to use the watch for diving then maybe the Mk2 isn’t for you.
      I would dispute the ‘master of none’ comment though.
      Garmin do what they do and very well. They’re a multi billion dollar organisation that lead the way in fitness tech and are at the forefront of marine and sonar technology too.
      Remember - the Mk2 is only their second offering in the world of scuba, and to be this competent at it all ready and to produce something that is challenging the market leaders, doesn’t happen by accident.
      The Fenix 6 which the Mk2 is based on is one of the most incredible sports watches I’ve used.
      If you can get the chance to go into your local Garmin stockist and check out the Mk2, do so before you make your purchase. You might be pleasantly surprised 👍🏻

      @@BlackMantaPhotography Hi, loving it already thanks! :-) Would love it even more if I could go diving! :-( My main concern is scratching the Casing as its not hard to mark apparently.

      Yep!! Both the Mk1 and Mk2 range both use the quick fit 26 straps 👍🏻

    With the mk2 released, the mk1 is on sale here in my country at 50% off. Do any of y'all think it's worth it to get the mk1 since it's on sale? I don't rlly need AI cuz I'm doing mostly recreational dives and I do run, cycle, and cardio quite a bit

      It’s a good question that I’m sure a lot of people will be wondering?
      The thing to consider is the Mk1 is based on the Fenix 5 while the Mk2 based on the Fenix 6.
      There’s a huge difference in the screen size too.
      If this isn’t a big deal for you then the Mk1 is a good shout fo sure 👍🏻

      I say go for it. I love the MK1 and getting it for half price is a steal. As for size, I was concerned at first but when it arrived it was okay and I’ve gotten quite used to depending on it as a daily watch as well. Best of luck!

    Unfortunately I had to return the MK2i because the Respiration Rate app gives incorrect readings (EXTREMELY OFF) I do a lot of breathing exercises and breath holds and I was getting 15-16 brpm while i was holding my breath for 3-4 min or doing 3-4 breaths bpm and the watch telling me I was breathing 16 brpm. SO DISAPPOINTING.... I was looking forward to free dive with this beauty but for $1700 I can't justify a partial watch working accurately. I reached out to Garmin they said they would run some tests etc and get back to me, I checked Garmin forums and they all complain about the same issue that has lasted over 8 months.... Hopefully you can review that portion of it. Thank you kindly

      Thanks for this comment - interesting read. I'll definitely keep an eye out for this and try to look into it in more detail. I must say, I'm not hot on breath-hold exercises, so great you've been able to identify and call this one out! Hopefully, Garmin will get back with a response!

    Nice review. To answer your question, who would not want AI? Freedivers, they would just get the mk2.

      And sometimes the answer is staring you in the face!! 🤣
      100% accurate.
      Of all the freedivers I personally know they are also accomplished scuba divers. However, fascinated by the number of people who ‘only’ freedive that have commented on this video.
