I definitely do not need any more paints! I'm doing a "no paint buy" for 2024. I can use what I have. Realizing that more paint will not make me a better artist 😉. But it's nice that you review sets so that we can make better decisions.
I’ve been doing a no-buy art supply for the past two months and I feel more focused on my art and less distracted by all the shiny new things! Its great! But I still love watching Lindsey’s reviews! ❤
I had to laugh a little as you were announcing the colors you were laying down, it sounded like the Rose Parade announcers! It got me a little more in the mood for the holidays!
Wow!! I’m sooo happy and proud! If I had the wherewithal to even DO a review I would have said exactly what you said about this set, Lindsay!! Not that I disagree with you very often. This review is absolutely spot on! I love the wooden box, I love the brush, but there’s not a lot of paint…So, it depends on if you want to spend the $ on the box and brush. Personally, I wouldn’t buy it for $65. Again, Lindsay, your complete breakdown of the pigments, etc is invaluable! You rock!
This sent me down a rabbithole about PB17. I'm a pigment nerd, yet I still don't have that in watercolor. Holbein still uses it (I think?) in their gouache color Katsura Blue. Whoops, looks like it might be PB15 by now! I thought there was none in watercolor, but you're right, Paul Rubens did use it back in 2021. Quite possibly not anymore. And apparently it's used in Mission Gold Silver Class but only as a mix. Possibly available from some small handmade makers. A little less lightfast than PB15. But a beautiful transparent cyan!
The physical palette is so pretty. I’m at the point where I just buy open stock tubes to refill pans and rarely look at sets anymore. I didn’t realize the Rosa Gallery paints wore down quickly. Good to know.
I paint daily, and it lasts me about a year and a half - two years. Then again, you can find the sets for about $15 on sale, so that's quite a deal per length of time. I just wish their browns were stronger
Great review! I saw the day when they jacked the price up to $65 and I absolutely believe they did that so they could put a sale on the item for black friday...bc the day after increasing the price to $65- they listed a $10 off coupon with it- so the final price was $55... I couldn't believe the sliminess of it all...ive also noticed a lot of products go up in price this last month or so and I 100% believe it's so the companies can charge gift buyers more during the holidays and so the companies can "reduce" prices for black Friday and other holiday deals...Anyway, sorry about the rant...lol. great video as always, thanks for sharing and much love 💙
I'm relieved that this isn't available on amazon uk right now as sometimes that's what i need to stop me buying a cute palette that i really don't need! Love watching your reviews, my husband is currently laughing at me because I'm so happy watching paint dry!
For the Spring Green, they used PY151 Benzimidazalone Yellow... much less glowy and spreading than PY150, green gold/nickel azo yellow. That's why it didn't look like PY150 :) (Edit: I see you figured that out, but Dialyride Yellow is deep and it's PY83.) I agree with you, I prefer a browner Burnt Sienna and it's turned totally orange in the past few decades. I have a tube of Grumbacher Academy from the mid 80s and it's such a gorgeous hue! They still do use PBR7 and it looks like they might still do that deep brown hue. I am mad at Daniel Smith, just like you, but I do like their basic Burnt Sienna, Burnt and Raw Umber hues.
Hullo Lindsay, I was feeling like I had watched this already! But it was the painting demo that you did! I am glad that you continue to create substantive reviews for us, thank you. I am glad that you have shown us to good and the plastic of this product! I believe that I am just not going to buy any more plastic palettes. I have converted my travel sets to metal and studio sets to ceramics! Oh, I still have plastic ones I am not going to just throw them out! Thank you for sharing this lovely palette with us. I did make my own soft pastel box and I have been thinking about asking my brother to make me a wooden box for some watercolors and ceramic mixing palette! I envision a space for the metal palettes inserts and a ceramic tile or handmade palette for mixing. It does have a certain charm and nothing beats the smell of good hardwoods! Thank you for sharing this review with us. Oh! I use a short scrubber brush for ALL My lifting, getting your knuckles rapped with a maul stick for using a squirrel brush for lifting will make you think twice about lifting with the “wrong” brush! Please take care and enjoy your day!
Thank you for the review, Lindsey. I've been eyeing this pallette, because I really like the wooden box. The pans, however, remind me of the Kuretake Transparent Watercolor set, which also had half-filled pans with identical indentations
Thank you so very much because I have been looking for a quality palette that I could then refill with higher quality paints. But that would give me nice pants to work with and a good color selection for a reasonable price. So if I can find this at a cheaper price tomorrow then I will definitely do so.
Great review Lindsay. Really sweet wooden pallet. I do not need more paint. As it is I'll never use all i have before going to that big studio in the sky. Excuse me while I go lift that large tote full of pallets and paint to remind myself.😜💜
The box is so cute! Good to know the paints are nice. Love your detailed reviews. I always look to see if you have reviewed an item before I buy it. I might buy it if it drops down to $45 on Black Friday.
Enjoyed this review. Even though I don’t need any more paint, still a relaxing watch and loved the greens you got out of these colour mixes. Thanks for the video and review.
Love watching all your videos and reviews. I finally realize that I have way more great paint than I'm likely to use in this life. Ha! This palette is cute but doesn't wow me. You asked here(?) about our preference for dried paint pans vs tube paint. I prefer working with dry paints & feel like I have better control over the amount of paint on my brush. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!❤
SENNELIER is the only commercial brand that carries PR242, vermilion… It is one of my absolute favorites! also, it’s funny that they would give the Rose madder Color a four-star rating, since it contains PV 19 and😂😂 PR 122 which are both extremely light fast. The color selection and consistency that you describe, reminds me of Eastern European watercolors like Rosa gallery and others. Looks like😂 a really nice set :-) thanks for the review, thorough as usual! :-)
Amazing how I watch this review this although I am certain I will not buy it, as I have enough paint to last a lifetime. It is always good to listen to you and watch you swatc, paint and comment.
Excellent review . I bought the paint for 45 a few weeks ago . Haven’t tried it yet . I am not in a rush to try it because I own other paint sets . Thank you for all the information !
Suggestion? I'm moving from my student grade paint to professional. You have multiple reviews so I'm a little confused which way to go. I'm using Meilang paints which I like but can't buy refills. Suggestions. Running out reds and yellows.
You van get a set of 36 5ml tube refills for meilang now on sale for $22 amzn.to/43sYrQH but if you only need a few colors you can buy van gogh tibes from Blick for $3.58 a 10ml tube shrsl.com/4go4v just choose the closest colors you need.
I find your review videos very entertaining! And I always learn great little tips and pigment info. I particularly love the sleuthing….. on that note, I have a question about Turner paints because you seem to be very familiar with them and they are not very common where I live in Europe. I was wondering if Turner has a student line of watercolours? I’ve only seen the artist watercolours advertised on Jackson’s art supplies. I was recently in Japan and I picked up 6 tubes of turner watercolour for 120¥. It’s SO inexpensive that I wonder if it is a student line or just an old packaging (maybe only used in Japan?) that’s being phased out…. I got a crazy good deal on Turner Acrylic gouache in different packaging too. They both looked as if they’d been packaged up in plastic sleeves in store. The store was in Osaka, and I THINK that the turner factory is there.
I dont think they offer student grade, at least not in America, and supplies are cheaper in Japan because more people do srt there and they have little inflation (companies actually apologize to the public if the must raise prices!) They will make more money in forgoing markets. I think tmyou got a good deal, enjoy! Oh and the Japan packaging is a little different than the USA packaging.
Wow, that turned price seems really high considering the Nickerson poster colors are produced there as well. They're like $50 here in the states for a 18 CT set.
I was watching while I was cooking and eating but you caught my attention when you started mixing colors. I would love to see a video on mixing some fairly basic colors like, skin tones, peach, more olive types, aqua, and other more unusual greens like forest dark green, how to get a pale blue without adding white, I have a decent palette but not lots of the mixed colors. I do mix lots of colors but I waste a lot of paint because I don’t know the formulas. Is their a cookbook or formulas?
65.oo is too much considering a 48 set of White Nights is much cheaper for full pans in a wood or beech box 179. to 199. max or a plastic tin way cheaper. You can buy a very nice wood cigar box for 5.00 and make your own wood box with ceramic tile mixing surface way cheaper, in my opinion.
I would get it just for the box and brush. On sale of course. 😂 Do you know the dimensions of the plastic pallet? I wonder if there's a ceramic one out there that would fit. 🤔
it looks nice i would get it if it goes on sale ,i paid more for my van gogh wood box but i got the 12 pink and purple set and was able to fit them ,i love wood this looks like a better made box than mine,i google the name it showed a illinois company ,not sure if it is this one, thank you
So my current watercolor palette is the original White Nights 36 whole pan palette (it is extremely large) that I got in 2014 back before they reformulated and raised the price, and now I'm interested in buying a new palette that is more compact so I can use it in bed and take it with me when I go out. I'd like to get something of equal or greater quality, so I'm trying to figure out how other brands compare. I'd like to stay under $100, but under $50 would be even better. Also, if you remember, I asked a question about those sanjoki markers recently on a different video, but I forgot to respond to your reply and now I don't remember what video that was on haha. I figured I'll just do it here, instead. My comment was about the ink getting a speckled appearance as it dried, and I think I figured out part of the problem. After doing some more research, I saw some people saying that speckling is linked to markers that are extremely wet/juicy with absorbant paper. I tested this theory out by using the chisel nib instead of the brush nib, because it's dryer, and there wasn't any speckling as long as I used a light hand. I also noticed that thinner, less absorbant paper speckled less, even with the brush nib. Unfortunately, after figuring this out and then trying to do a single piece in my ohuhu marker sketchbook, multiple markers ran out of ink, and of course it was all the light colors. I don't know why I keep having so many problems with them! I think I'm giving up and am going to message the seller to see if I can get a refund or a replacement. It's been so long that I doubt they will, but thankfully it was only $35 so it's not too much of a loss. I think I'm gonna try some ohuhu markers, next, because those seem to be really popular.
I'd suggest Paul rubens. They have 24 and 48 sets in metal tins. The quality is as good if not better than white nights and they have some awesome sales for black Friday if you have amazon prime. amzn.to/3QFvDhK
@thefrugalcrafter Thanks! I was actually considering a palette from them! Been wanting to get their flourescent watercolors along with the glitter ones, though I actually saw a dupe of their glitter palette from the brand Artsy if I'm remembering correctly. It has good reviews on Amazon and seems to have all the same colors at practically half the price. I was also looking for their jelly gouache palette you recommended years ago ago, but it's not on Amazon anymore. Hoping I can find it somewhere else.
I am going to offer some unsolicited advice, Lindsay has talked about DaVinci tubes for the classes she has held. I have found ALL of DaVinci paints simply wonderful! They have hand poured palettes too! From 6, 12, 24 half pans from several very talented artists. I started with Denise’s palettes and I have purchased all of her curated paints too! I purchased a basic set of warm and cool primaries and was so blown away that I purchased several pre-made palettes and now DaVinci have taken over my studio palette that has 40 wells and had more Mijello paints at the start, now DaVinci reigns supreme! I still have other brands in the studio palette because every company has colors that are just perfect! Sennelier French Ultramarine is just one that I can recall easily.
Wow, just looked it up on Amazon and I’m not sure what the exchange rate is, but they’ve put the price up to $122 Australian 😢 Have also noticed lately that some of the professional paint that was once affordable ie White Nights, is now at least double, sometimes triple the price it was a couple years ago. It seems as soon as something becomes popular, they raise the prices. Do they not realise that the reason it was so popular is because it was once considered affordable?
It's crazy! I think the reason white nights went up was because of the war and less product being exported. This set is reported to be very expensive outside of the USA. For $45, it was a solid buy, but I wouldn't pay more for an unknown brand. I had a hard time justifying $45 for an unknown, and if I knew the price would go up, I probably would have passed because it wouldn't be interesting to my viewers at that price. I like it, I'm glad to have it but bummed for others that the price went up.
Thanks for another great review! I definitely would not buy this set. I think it was a very cheap and lazy move to put a plastic mixing well palette in the top instead of adding a permanent mixing spot like so many other wooden palette boxes have. I also think it was a very cheap move to not fill the pans to the brim. Also, the paint is definitely around student grade/quality of much cheaper paints. The price they charge for this is waaaay too much for the quality and thought put into the wooden box. In general, I tend to stay away from cheaper watercolor paint sets because I have a professional stash of tubes from DS and W&N and a student grade stash of Cotman tubes. Instead of buying sets i would maybe use only once, i buy a new tube or two of DS or WN in colors I do the have yet or to replace colors that are used up.
I have purchased a few ceramic palettes from Etsy and if you contacted one of the many people selling palettes, I am sure they might have a perfect size or be willing to make some for people looking to replace the plastic ones! Lindsay has given us the measurements!
Yes. I use a decent cellulose paper, fabriano studio or something similar for consistency. You can't hide filler on that paper. Most things look great on Arches and I want to see the flaws when I swatch.
I have been watching your videos for year and have believed in your opinion of products and bought a class set. . I just watched you video from a few months ago about artist grade watercolors. In it you mention over and over that you respect a company that gives you good customer service. Well Craftamo when I tried to buy your brushes had no customer service and I lost $70 because of a simple mistake.. They made no effort to correct it. We went back and forth serva times and they just said to bad we can't help you. I can't help but wonder if all the artist who use them are just creating the brush sets to make more money. And the company is only in it for them.
I am so sorry to hear that. I will not be working with them again for a couple of reasons. Craft amo looked great when I did my research but was let down. I had to interview on behalf of a couple of customers to make sure they were taken care of (to my knowledge they were) but that is too many issues 8n m opinion for a quality brush company. I'm not going into further in a public space, but needless to say, I will not be doing another set with them. I don't know the details of your problem, but I am so sorry they treated you poorly.
Supervision does extruded half pans. I have one of their sets. I have have tubes as well but these feel a bit more clean and transparent like paul rubens 4th gem tubes. They could be buyngbthst paintbin bulk and making their own pan i suppose. Paul rubens does liquid poured pandemic but they are flush to the brim. It's a mystery. They paint like Paul ubens 4th Gen or schminke to me.
@@thefrugalcrafter agree, they don't look like anything else in the pan. I was thinking more the wrappers I think. I'd bought a specialty set once that jumped from $25 to $80 and then disappeared that was supervision with similar wrappers. But it was extruded. Hmmm. 🤔
THANKS LINDSAY- Great timing, I am really gratefully watching the new reviews so I can buy some art & journaling materials for my brand new daughter-in-law's Christmas gifts. I have so many videos to catch up on! I've missed all the videos from the last 5-6 weeks. I'm Laying here in bed, finally recovering from my 😷5th round of Covid. It's lovely to listen to your voice while shopping. Stay Well everyone, This latest round of contagion stinks, & that's after my shots
I totally agree!
I need to realize that too. Lol. I need to use more of what I have. Which is a lot
I'm right there with you sister I am not buying any more supplies until I finish up half of what I have and I sell my art.
I need to do that, too.
I had to laugh a little as you were announcing the colors you were laying down, it sounded like the Rose Parade announcers! It got me a little more in the mood for the holidays!

My goodness you are so informed about pigment and manufacturing. I learn so much from these videos. Makes me a better artist. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Definitely a better and more wise consumer.

Hi Lindsay. Thank you for your video.🎉.❤.
You are so welcome!
The physical palette is so pretty. I’m at the point where I just buy open stock tubes to refill pans and rarely look at sets anymore. I didn’t realize the Rosa Gallery paints wore down quickly. Good to know.
They do, they seem less dense but still a great buy!
I paint daily, and it lasts me about a year and a half - two years. Then again, you can find the sets for about $15 on sale, so that's quite a deal per length of time. I just wish their browns were stronger

You are absolutely 💯
I have noticed that too but everything I go for a deal, when I get it there is always a slight to major defect.
Lindsey, Roman Szmal watercolors are on sale now at Jackson’s. 😊
Thanks!
Iv used double sided tape on wiggly pans . It works well.
I'm relieved that this isn't available on amazon uk right now as sometimes that's what i need to stop me buying a cute palette that i really don't need!
Love watching your reviews, my husband is currently laughing at me because I'm so happy watching paint dry!
😆
Thank you so many great gift ideas! L❤ve the hat....
Thank you! 😊

I totally agree!
Thank you for the review, Lindsey. I've been eyeing this pallette, because I really like the wooden box. The pans, however, remind me of the Kuretake Transparent Watercolor set, which also had half-filled pans with identical indentations

Ohhhh they do remind me of that palette,, how interesting!

Thanks for reviewing these Lindsay! The colors are really nice but wear down fast. For 45 it’s a great gift!💕👠

At $45 it might be worth it for the wood pallet. Could refill with the meilang tubes you reviewed the other day.
I’m putting my phathlo green back in my palette. Love the greens you got! Thanks!💕
Wonderful!
Great review Lindsay. Really sweet wooden pallet. I do not need more paint. As it is I'll never use all i have before going to that big studio in the sky. Excuse me while I go lift that large tote full of pallets and paint to remind myself.😜💜

It’s such a gorgeous set and I love the wooden box but the paints wear down too quickly for me. Thank you again for your thorough review!
Same here!
The box is so cute! Good to know the paints are nice. Love your detailed reviews. I always look to see if you have reviewed an item before I buy it. I might buy it if it drops down to $45 on Black Friday.
I think it's worth it at that price!
Enjoyed this review. Even though I don’t need any more paint, still a relaxing watch and loved the greens you got out of these colour mixes. Thanks for the video and review.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love watching all your videos and reviews. I finally realize that I have way more great paint than I'm likely to use in this life. Ha!
This palette is cute but doesn't wow me.
You asked here(?) about our preference for dried paint pans vs tube paint. I prefer working with dry paints & feel like I have better control over the amount of paint on my brush.

so stunning, what a gorgeous set ❤❤❤
It really is!
Kind of like Kuritake Gansi paints. They don't fill their pans either.
not gonna lie, I would buy I for the box if it was available here. But I don’t mind that it isn’t. Thanks for the review!
Velcro a ceramic tile cut to size so you can take it out and wash it easily if needed
Good idea!
Michaels just posted your class from the other day. Great watch.
Awesome, thank you!
Question…. Are watercolor pans the same as cakes? Thanks Lindsay …..
Essentially yes, sometimes round pans are reffered to as cakes but they are the same.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!
I find your review videos very entertaining! And I always learn great little tips and pigment info. I don't think they are either, definitely not prima. They remind me m9st of schminke.

Good idea, most comes down to color theory and practice.
Yes, there are many, or used t be. HL sells basic color wheels that help with basic color mixing.

The palette is 7 5/8"× 3 1/4"
Thanks! 😁
Amazon Canada has gone to CAD $155. Way too much.
I wonder if they hiked up the price when they saw your name as a buyer. hehehehe
😆 in that case they could have sent me one as pr!
it looks nice i would get it if it goes on sale ,i paid more for my van gogh wood box but i got the 12 pink and purple set and was able to fit them ,i love wood this looks like a better made box than mine,i google the name it showed a illinois company ,not sure if it is this one, thank you
Interesting. The paint is made in China. I couldn't find out much about them. Their website didn't even have contact info.

Cheers Lindsay for feeding my want monster😂
😆
Wow, just looked it up on Amazon and I’m not sure what the exchange rate is, but they’ve put the price up to $122 Australian 😢
Have also noticed lately that some of the professional paint that was once affordable ie White Nights, is now at least double, sometimes triple the price it was a couple years ago.
@@thefrugalcrafterbut Rosa is still affordable and they're in the ukraine
Do you think the palette is a standard size so you can buy a ceramic or porcelain palette for the space?
I'm not sure but you could cit a ceramic tile down and silicone it in I bet.
I have purchased a few ceramic palettes from Etsy and if you contacted one of the many people selling palettes, I am sure they might have a perfect size or be willing to make some for people looking to replace the plastic ones! Lindsay has given us the measurements!
Do you use a specific paper when you do all your swatching?
@@thefrugalcrafter I’m sorry to hear I wasn’t the only one. It’s a shame when a company is just out for the money and not long term customers.
they scream Supervisioon to me- whoever makes that
Supervision does extruded half pans.
Hmmm. 🤔
I never hear your furnace but I also am not listening with headphones
I'm glad:)
No, I do not need another set of watercolors...you are the devil sometimes...
😆
THANKS LINDSAY- Great timing, I am really gratefully watching the new reviews so I can buy some art & journaling materials for my brand new daughter-in-law's Christmas gifts.
I have so many videos to catch up on! I've missed all the videos from the last 5-6 weeks. I'm Laying here in bed, finally recovering from my 😷5th round of Covid.
It's lovely to listen to your voice while shopping.

This latest round of contagion stinks, & that's after my shots
