Close Coupling Hattons Genesis And Hornby Coaches

  • There's always a tradeoff between close coupling coaches and rolling stock compared to getting prototype appearances. The main reason for this is that model railway curves are generally much tighter than out in the real world. And UK models generally are designed to take a no. 2 radius curve which translates to about 17.25"radius. To navigate these curves coaches and other long rolling stock have to be separated a greater distance than the prototype would be. Especially on layouts with straight runs or large radius curves the large spaces between coaches can look even worse. So what are our options for close coupling? In this video I'll examine that questions and offer some suggestions.

    Interesting video. I dislike hunts they tend to break being 3D printed. Kadees for me all the way.
    It I feel it's a bit unfair to compare Hatton's and Hornby, as they are made for different markets, and price points.
    The Hornby ones are based on the LBSCR Prototypes which were mainly for the Terriers which were produced a while ago... they are also I think £10 cheaper.
    Hattons made again for a market based on SECR/LCDR vehicles higher detail some of it completely pointless.. especially internals.. luggage racks.... why...
    Also on the underside and wheels ect... I feel Hornby's is better not only does it go side to side... we all don't have billiard table smooth layouts, there's bumps, inclines, and Hatton's certainly are more sensitive to that. Also some have QC issues... so price and quality is a bit mmm questionable but your only reviewing what you have in front of you rather than a larger pool of modellers.

      The coaches I got were about the same price as Hattons and look very similar until you get them out of the box. I would say the Hornby ones should be advertised as Railroad Range.

      @@UKModelRailways I would sort of agree in my view it's unfortunately Hornby changed their minds otherwise it would of been a stunning accurate LBSC carriage for the terriers...
      It's not really railroad due to small details ok not many but there are some which rules it out.

    I am glad you showed the Hornby and Hatton's coaches side-by-side. I had wondered about the difference, but had pre-ordered and had delivered the Hatton's versions already. I suppose that Hornby tries to address the toy and beginning enthusiasts market as well as the enthusiasts market and end up compromising. I don't know if that is reflected in the price.
    If you have standardized on the KD couplers, why even think about the Hunt couplers? You even commit to a rake with Hunt couplers, with KDs at each end. Is there an advantage to that, or are you simply exploring options?

    • @UKModelRailways
      @UKModelRailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The KDs are a very expensive option whereas you can do a coach with the Hunt couplings for £1.50. So with coaches that will be essentially continuously coupled it just makes economic sense to use the Hunts. Another option would be to use actual model chains or screw couplings!

    • @rgmichel
      @rgmichel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UKModelRailways I agree that chains and screw couplings would be interesting. That is a modelling option that goes back decades in my memory. Thanks for reminding me of that one. I now understand why the Hunts are useful. Thanks.

    I wIsh Hatton hadn't sold out of GWR Genesis coaches before I'd decided to model that era. :(

    • @UKModelRailways

      Yes, they are a very elegant model. I was tempted at one point to cancel my order and go with the Hornby version when they rushed theirs into production ahead of Hattons, now I am really glad I was patient.

    • @jibbsey
      @jibbsey ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish they were able to fulfil my patiently waited 3yr pre-order of 9 GWR examples, instead they cancelled my entire order the week they became available to buy to everyone, then further insulted me by offering a couple of left over diagrams nobody else wanted that couldn't even form a rake. Won't bother with Hattons ever again.

      @rgmichel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jibbsey Must have been a reason for that mess-up. Did you ask 'em? Usually Hattons has been pretty good to me. Especially being in the USA and buying from the UK, they were one of the first to take off the VAT for me. Some others took a while to do that.

    • @jibbsey
      @jibbsey ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rgmichel I tried probing them but no good answers, explained that I'd resisted just buying the Hornby ones whilst waiting patiently for just over 3yrs (placed my pre-order just after they were first announced) in good faith that the Hatton's versions would be worth the wait, now it's even hard to get Hornby versions. I am in Australia so also overseas from them. It was also my first purchase experience from them and they just shrugged it off.

      I was afraid I had been shorted at first when I failed to get a notice when others reported receiving theirs. So I shot off an email fast a d they updated their lists and sent me out my set ASAP. I think because of the 3 year production delay some of their pre-orders got messed up.

    Those couplers look to be a better look than the older roco style couplers that hornby includes with the pullmans

      Hornby have included magnetic couplings in their 2023 range including one that represents vacuum pipes - which I will try when they are available. I have used Hunt couplings on bogie coaches with a lot of success, but not yet tried them on non bogie stock. My only worry with the rigid shank magnetic couplings is whether they have enough flexibility for this application particularly on radius 2. Something to try out this evening on my Hornby LSWR coaches - Hattons ones not due until later in the year.

  • @dialwright
    @dialwright ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Hunt couplings are also very brittle, the NEM tails are prone to snap; if they were to be made of a more flexible material, they would be much more satisfactory.

      So far none of mine have broken. I have some from a competitor that did break when I tried to remove them but that was one out of a dozen.

    Great Review Larry ... I have the same coaches and will be experimenting with these coupler options, I am also on the search for a next18 decoder that can replicate the flickering gas lighting of these early coaches. The lights are very bright. After that not sure what else can improve these amazing coaches.

    • @UKModelRailways
      @UKModelRailways  ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought using a Next18 decoder to be a very expensive option, If you know anything about electronics you might be able to add a small resistor to knock down the brightness.

    Hi Larry, Tension lock UK couplers are really outdated ! My go to are the Kadee's NEM 18 indeed. I don't have tight curves so no buffer lock. There are cheaper magnet couplers as alternative to the expensive Hunt couplers. But I don't like them magnets. Kadee's are far superior, more realistic and easy un- and coupling over a magnet between the rails when shunting. Cheers, Filip
