I changed the spark plugs on my DOHC Subaru EJ engine last year in about 5 minutes... because I had the engine pulled to redo the headgaskets! Great stuff as usual Brian.
QUICKTIP: This goes for ALL vehicles, before you completely remove the sparkplug and expose the cylinder hole, clean the area with a rag then shopvac to ensure no little rust particles or dirt pieces end up in your engine. This will also prevent stuff getting in your engine when you're blindly trying to thread in the new sparkplug.
Good to know! It's funny- Bombardier four wheelers just didn't sell well in the US till they changed the name to CAN AM and now they are a highly preferred brand.
The ones with bends work just fine. The wire should leave the coil and go straight down. The bend wires go on the side with clearance to go straight down.

hey Brian. Just replaced my spark plugs on my 2001 outback H6. I used this video as a reference although its an H4 thats there. Also for anyone else out there, if your doing the spark plugs and wires on the H6 (EZ30, EZ30D) just a comment that its very tight getting the coils out.

It would be tough to answer here, but there are MANY illustrations of firing orders even on rotary motors here on TH-cam. On most 4 cylinders the two ends and two outer pistons go together at opposite intervals of the other two. On most v6 and v8 engines they're balanced per length and side *(bank)

I've got an 06 WRX, 2.5L Turbo, 42k miles, that has been giving me some headaches. The codes thrown are P0340(CPS Bank A) and P0016(crankshaft correlation) I dropped it off at the garage down the street from my work that 'specializes' in Subaru's. He supposedly checked timing and swapped out the CPS sensor, I think he just reset the ECU. A day later, lose power at ~4KRPM and engine takes 5seconds of cranking to start. I replaced the crank sensor and checked timing on just the drivers side(didn't have time for the other side) and am still having the same problem, same codes. Now that it's getting cold out, it will fall flat on it's face and die if I don't let it warm up for 5 minutes. The CEL is intermittent, sometimes will go away for 3 days, but always comes back. Car runs fine other than that. I thought it skipped a tooth and will be getting both covers off tomorrow to properly check timing. If you have a spare minute to brainstorm, what might be causing this? I'd really appreciate any insight. Thanks and keep up the educational videos!

Usually an intake will come with a section of hose/pipe to accept your MAF sensor or instructions on how to reuse the stock piece. I know the K&N Typhoon intakes for WRX come with a new MAF pipe.
Great video man, I have a 2015 legacy has little cricket squeaks I noticed when letting it warm up. They are kind of random they are definitely there more than not, it seems after I have been driving for a while if I get out and just keep the car on pop the hood it sounds smooth most of the time after it’s been driving for a while. But at the same time since I’ve heard this sound I’ve noticed a performance difference I’m still getting proper response when I hit the gas it just feels like somethings different. It’s got 70k miles someone said it could be my belt tension but that thing feels tight to me? I usually take it to the Subaru dealer to get maintenance, I’ve done many oil changes brakes as well as axles and suspension on my Acura I just worry tryin to do the spark plugs myself or replace the tension belt myself but I’m going to buy new tires so not trying to drop a couple grand there at once ya know any idea what the squeak might be? And how difficult is this for someone who isn’t a mechanic but can follow instructions very well?
Took my plug boots out last night, but didn't turn them more than, let's say 90 degrees. Then I saw this video tonight. Should I worry about my 2002 TS wagon? I've got the valve cover off, since there was oil in the plug wells, and I'm about to change out the gaskets and tube seals. Any advice? A little debris landed on tubes when I took the cover off. Any concerns? I wiped it off with a paper towel best I could.
I have gotten rubber stuck in a spark plug channel and removing it is NOT FUN. And it was the stupid rubber boot from the spark plug socket. The 30 minute plug job on my fiancee's Civic turned into about a 3 hour ordeal, when you count the time we spent searching for a tool adequate enough to pull it out. Given its small mass, I got some pretty good distance on that little rubber plug when I threw it, though. :)
you need a spark plug socket with a magnet in there , ive got one and i tell ya its soo much better than a spark plug socket with a rubber boot inside which once oil gets onto it swells and is then deemed useless :)
chromed sparkplugs contain a special coating and Subaru does not recommend using antisieze on those type of plugs. The coating is designed to keep plugs from sticking to the threats. Only black uncoated plugs should use antisieze. You can read it yourself on the Subaru Website under Mechanics bulletins. Thankyou.
Glad you asked! If you use a vacuum cleaner and the intake valve in the engine is open, you will suck fuel/air mixture into your vacuum cleaner. The electric motor in the vacuum has brushes which arc much like a spark plug and....kaboom! Trust me, this has happened (not to me)!
Your video is very good and your explanation to the point. One thing (not a criticism, but a suggestion), you could try using a front band attached to the camera, on your forehead. That would give you full control on both hands. Thanks again.

You should rig up a hat camera mount that way you can use both hands and the camera will be pointed wherever your looking. Then you can use a separate camera to get the close ups and edit the two camera views later. The newer windows movie maker is actually a great video editor tool and works great for mixing video clips. Great video keep em coming!

@1ownjoo2 I've never experienced that with GMB pumps myself, but I've heard of them leaking grease on break in. I did install one once that was missing the seal all together. Crap happens.

I just bought Denso's "first time fit wires" for my Subaru Legacy 1997, European version, 2.0lt, non turbo, wagon, but two of the wires are with 90 degree angle connectors( to the coil boots), and I am sightly worried, since the current once (and most I found on the Internet) are with 4 straight connecttors to the coils. Sould I ask for a replacement of the wires with 4 straight or having 2 of them with 90 degrees connectors is as they should be??? Thank you Ivo
I just have a question about getting the boots out. I twisted them ccw well past 180 degrees and when I go pull the boots, there is some resistance instead of them just easily pulling out. I just wanted to make sure this is normal before I start pulling them with a little more force?

On Subaru's, the PCV is easily cleanable. Remove it, soak it in carb cleaner, and shake it a bit to see if the valve inside moves freely. It is all metal, no rubber parts to worry about ruining with cleaners.

hi brian, i got a bad batch of fuel a few weeks ago and my 92 subaru liberty started stuttering farting and stalling i replaced the fuel filter and did a tune up on it and put fresh fuel and injector cleaner in but its still stuttering and farting and stalling by stuttering and farting i mean i accelarate and i get no response and ithe car bunny hops for a few secs before responding any idea what it is. i would be tremendously grateful on how to fix it

Yes. And one on the drivers side front strut tower. Newer ones just have a strainer in the tank.

I would! But I'd also use it very sparingly. No one does the 15K mile thing- though I would think it would be pretty effective.
@1ownjoo2 It's up to you man. I would clean it with brake parts cleaner and compressed air and give it a week of service and then look again.

It depends on the plugs you're using. Irridium last 100K miles double platinum 60K miles copper 30K miles. Factory plugs are platinum.
Your belt tension may be off. (loose) It depends on the squeal. I've heard Subaru's squeal from the main bearings, belts, and from the exhaust.

Just replaced all my spark plugs today, pain of a job but it mustve had a pretty bad misfire before cause it feels way faster and smoother now

That's normal and sometimes the ends stay in. Just fish them out with a pick and or compressed air.

It should be threaded in or clipped in. Ultimately you'll just need to find a way to remove it and install it in the new plumbing.

*intake air temp sensor??? Drill a hole- pull the sensor out of the old plumbing and insert it. You're car uses that as a standard.

Hello Brian, I have a 97 Subaru legacy outback wagon that was getting around 19 - 20 mpg going back and forth to work mainly freeway plus some in town driving but in the last couple weeks my mileage has gone down. What would be a possible cause of fuel mileage to suddenly change. I appreciate any advice you may be able to give.
can you use that grease to take out the spark plugs? Cus I am having a difficult time taking out my spark plugs. My socket gets stuck.
EBay can be a good source for NGK plugs.

hi brian, i got a bad batch of fuel a few weeks ago and my 92 subaru liberty started stuttering farting and stalling i replaced the fuel filter and did a tune up on it and put fresh fuel and injector cleaner in but its still stuttering and farting and stalling by stuttering and farting i mean i accelarate and i get no response and ithe car bunny hops for a few secs before responding any idea what it is. i would be tremendously grateful on how to fix it
