Although I was only six when the fifties ended, I can remember the times when you had the a Great War generation and the Second World War generation and the richness they brought and the comforting presence they gave to a boy like myself. The film portrays the ideal, idyllic Christmas, which either brings you joy or a pang of sadness, depending on your mood - sadness being for those lost times and that lost generation of actors who had something their modern counterparts are devoid of, and that is character and genuine talent. A magical film and this short documentary is a real joy for me. Thank you for posting this gem and thank you Professor Connelly.
My favourite film ever….growing up as a child in the early fifties in a little village , the vicarage was a big old hous3 next to our village school in a pretty lane , it a,ways seemed to snow back in the fifyie# too at Xmas, the nativity scene and glitter in the church , Carol singers, just the same, lovely family lived in vicarage, the vicar was very lovely but suthorative, just so similar, , Xmas was wonderful then , look at it now
Great Christmas movie!...I didn't know that this film existed, until I saw a clip of it on line a few years ago. I recently saw a clip of a modern rendition of the play. Done on the BBC. I've been trying to find out if its available on dvd.
Saw this film for the first time this Christmas and fell in love with it. Beautiful.

And if only I could see it again here in the US. Alas-it’s unavailable. Not even online. I saw it years ago on TCM.
The movie is available on DVD through Amazon.
Yes, my son bought it for me from Amazon.
Bought it on Amazon last year!
