  • Today Sensei Abian takes us through a how to practice your mawashi geri (round house kick).
    First we shall go through a quick warm up and stretch. This was more of a dynamic stretch where we focus on mobility and testing our full range of motion with our body. Do not push your body too hard or seek pain during this part. We we to ease our body into activation.
    We will then practice turning on our standing foot and getting our body into the right alignment for the kick. Grabbing your ankle, leg or even a chair can help you achieve this position.
    Finally we will practice hitting a target with both legs. First we practice the correct technique of the kick by going through each step slowly. After we can blend the movements together to produce a fluid kick.
    There is more than one way to perform a Mawashi Geri. The type of kick here can be usually seen more in Sport Kumite. It is characterised by having a longer range than a traditional Mawashi Geri, and does not telegraph your intention to strike compared to other ways to kick. This is because the kick is executed through the middle of your posture, before kicking in the round motion.

    You should mention this is the kumite way of doing the mawashi geri. In kihon it is a complete different approach, movement, and impact point.

    Great video, thanks.
    One point: I think its not necessary at least for all to turn supporting leg 180 degrees. Some may kck better when they turn it less, be quicker etc but as a foundation 180 is good so it makes practising people to turn it at least 90 =)
    Hitting point should be ball of the foot or front edge of the shoe to get it most destructive power. When practising with a person always with top of the foot for safety reasons. If you accidently kick with force with ball of the foot its most likely a KO.

      yeah i find that traditionally the standing leg was turned about 90°. That would have been mawashi geri keage, with the ball of the foot.
      as far as i know, hitting with the top of the foot is more of a modern way to kick, taken from arts like tae kwon do. and having the foot turned 180° will help with that kind of kick.

      Here's a playlist of some of our stretching routine.

      All stretches are going to be good if you feel stiffness in your body. Just remember to take it easy as you do them. Good Luck.

    The only thing i have trouble with is straightening my foot when i do the kick any tips 4 that?

    • @ZenShin
      @ZenShin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a common problem with students trying to perfect this kick.
      The best exercise would be to sit in Seiza position, as this stretches the ankle.
      This can be painful at first because your weight is on your feet, and they may not be flexible enough to withstand much pressure.
      Sitting down and pointing your toes is a more tolerable way to do this.

    This is how I learned the round house in wtf taekwondo but when I did shotokan and kyokushin it was taught differently. More like a hybrid Muay thai one coming up through a 45 degree angle.
    What is the kihon standard? I’m confused now

    • @ZenShin
      @ZenShin  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. This is a kind of mawashi geri you might see in karate sport kumite.
      A traditional mawashi keage would be how you described it, kicking with the ball of your foot, and coming from the side, rather than through the middle.

      Nothing is impossible to a willing mind.
      But I would first ask yourself what 'good' is for you, in your circumstance. No, you may never be as good as some that started young, and have maintained their training throughout their life. However by practicing Karate you will reap all the physical and mental benefits that are associated with it, regardless of your age.
