Oh, snap! Go Vaughn! _But Not Tonight_ is my #1 Depeche Mode song and my favorite song of all time. But it wasn't until 2005, right AFTER the live concert, that I realized it. I listened to it on the way home. I needed that song just at the right moment. It was that 'Touring the Angel' concert that I felt good again, and that song afterwards that brought me back. Has tremendous meaning for me. 4:52 - YUP!
I can't say I disagree with any of your picks. I'm sure my top ten DM songs change daily based on my mood, etc. But here's my top ten from the top of head without much thought. I'm sure I'm leaving some awesome songs off. 10. People are People (the song that introduced me to DM) 9. Somebody (classic Gore ballad) 8. Only When I Lose Myself (hate the video, but love the song) 7. But Not Tonight / Home (calling it a tie because I'm not including honorable mentions) 6. Death's Door (love this song; the Jazz Mix is great) 5. My Joy (SOFAD is my favorite album and My Joy my favorite B-side) 4. Stripped ('nuff said) 3. Shake the Disease (for all those reasons you said) 2. In Your Room (epic and dark; I prefer the album version to the Zephyr mix) 1. Enjoy the Silence (maybe a bit overplayed, and yet I can't get tired of this song)
It's hard to disagree with anybody's top 10 Depeche Mode songs. I like 116 Depeche Mode songs. If you asked me to create a top 10 out of that I would have a panic attack.
I think if they took time on But not tonight and made it darker it would be on par with anything off that album. Watch Scott Weiland sing it. Goosebumps
VG, my man, I really enjoyed this video, especially with Your piano playing! So nice!!! And I totally agree with your number 1 pick, I adore this song as well so much!!! And I totally get your emotions, 'cos I feel the same... 🤩I guess, we all feel the same... 🥰 When Charlize Theron - one of my favourite actresses of all time - called Depeche Mode as a "soundtrack of her life" I was just about to cry. And in a fact, I did... Thank You sooooo much for this video!!! All the best of luck!!!
don't ask me why but everything counts and leave in silence have a special place in my heart. probably because I started appreciating their style and songwriting thanks to those two songs
I've stumbled upon your channel by accident because TH-cam recommended watching this video. Man, this was an amazing list. Well done! So, here are my Top 10: 1. Home - For whatever reason, I just love the song, and it defines for me the talent of Martin 2. World In My Eyes - Yes, Kraftwerk vibes. I just say "Electric Café". This song amongst a few others made me change the instrument from drums to keyboard 3. Blasphemous Rumors - To this day, this song brings me to tears. Such a darkness, such a lack of compromise, just brilliant music 4. Halo - Exactly for the same reason you like it as well 5. Shake The Disease - Haunting, just haunting, such a beautiful song. 6. But Not Tonight - I instantly fell in love with this song when I heard it for the first time 7. A Question Of Lust - Again, such a beautiful song 8. Photographic - To this day one of the best songs ever recorded 9. Enjoy the Silence - The definition of a change of season, one of my coming-of-age songs 10. In Your Room - I love it for the same reason like you It's really interesting that in both your and my list is not a single song after "Ultra". The reasons are obvious. Fortunately, they reconciled me with "Memento Mori". Now, I'll go ahead and take the other way around. Let's see what you think are the worst songs from the lads.
Photographic, Ice Machine, The sun and the rainfall, Stories of old, It doesn’t matter two, Black celebration, Shake the disease, The bottom line, Should be higher, Wagging tongue. 😍
This was a terrific list, I can’t say that I disagree. I hadn’t considered Shake the Disease until you broke it down in your own special way. For me Halo is my favorite, everything about it is perfection. Thank you for your videos and please keep them coming.
Fantastic choices!! But Not Tonght holds a special place. My friends and I would always listen to this together back in our University days when we'd all come back home alone after a night out, lol. Seriously, imo I'd also include, Lie To Me, Higher Love, Personal Jesus (especially the extended album version) and To Have and to Hold.
I am also deadly serious about BUT NOT TONIGHT. That song doesn’t get the love it deserves by the band. It’s absolutely excellent and passed the test of time.
1. Enjoy The Silence 2. Policy of Truth 3. Walking In My Shoes 4. Insight 5. The Things You Said 6. Black Celebration 7. But Not Tonight 8. Stripped 9. Get Right With Me 10. World In My Eyes Honorable Mentions 1. Peace 2. Ghost Again 3. Always You 4. Going Backwards 5. Suffer Well/Come Back
That’s a damn good choice for #1, and a great description of the emotions it arouses, the layers of melodies, the multiple parts, you made a great case for it
1. Walking in My Shoes 2. Stripped 3. Enjoy the Silence 4. Never let me down again - Split Mix 5. In your Room 6. A Question of Time -Remix 7. Personal Jesus 8. Policy of Truth 9. Strange Love - Maxi mix 10. A Question of Lust …. My top underrated gems: Surrender, My Joy, Here is the House, Lie to me, Fly on the Windscreen, Sun and the Rainfall, Little 15, Sister of Night, Judas… and definitely But not Tonight.
I can't narrow it down to anything beyond top 15-20. Number one is Never Let Me Down Again. I can play that one over and over and get excited about it each and every time!
Fyi these r alan’s top 5 according to alan himself Not sure if they r in order or not because he was in russia and was drinking vodka during the interview In your room Walking, he said Stripped Never let me down Clean
Given how highly you've spoken of Memento Mori, I thought you might sneak a track from that album in. But I guess it's hard to bump out one of the classics.
I really enjoyed this video, Vaughn and, no, you were not being anal or pretentious. Now, I have been watching your videos for years and I think I can now affirm that you are not primarily a Depeche Mode fan but rather a fan of the 1986-1993 Depeche Mode, what you called the GOLDEN ERA. This is just fine. These songs are intimately linked to your youth and/or to some very personal and emotional experiences. I know because I feel the same way That being said, my own Top Ten is slightly different and it’s a very very difficult task to come up with only 10 songs. This might change tomorrow. For today, here we go: 10 - See You 9 - Leave in Silence 8 - Somebody 7 - It Doesn’t Matter Two 6 - Stripped 5 - The Love Thieves 4 - Halo 3- Never Let Me Down Again 2 - Waiting For The Night 1 - But Not Tonight Honorable mentions to Shake The Disease and everything on Violator and to Walking in My Shoes and It’s No Good and Home and to Ghosts Again and all the hits they did over the years.
1. Enjoy The Silence 2. Stripped 3. Everything Counts 4. Walking In My Shoes 5. Never Let Me Down Again 6. Policy Of Truth 7. A Question Of Lust 8. Strangelove 9. Personal Jesus 10. A Question Of Time
❤ not exactly what I would put in my top ten but damn, I love your deep dives & you really make me appreciate some of those that I would normally gloss over.
I wish we could teleport back to the live shows. 😅 1. Never let me down again 2. Strangelove 3. Question of lust 4. Higher love 5. Fly on the windscreen 6. Lie to me 7. In your room 8. It’s no good 9. Enjoy the silence 10. Walking in my shoes
Was this a hard task to make this Top 10? I couldn't do. I would have to separate the 80s/90s from 2000 on. To me they are two different Depeche Modes.
I was going to list my 10 favorites, but then realized that's impossible as there are at least 20+ songs I couldn't leave off a top-10 list! :-D Overall, I agree with "most" of Vaughn's list. In addition to the songs he mentioned, a few others I'd consider for a top 10 include: Home Suffer Well New Dress The Happiest Girl Walking in My Shoes A Question of Time I Want You Now The Things You Said Policy of Truth Rush Wrong You Move Ghosts Again Speak to Me Before we Drown
I really can’t rate them but my top 10 are probobly: Strangelove, Halo, Enjoy the silence, Personal Jesus, Stripped, Photographic, It’s no good, Behind the wheel, World in my eyes, Dangerous.
*my top 10 in no particular order enjoy halo rush strangelove (maxi mix) world in my eyes dressed in black everything counts but not tonight told you so 2 minute warning *honorable mentions in your room get the balance right home nothing pimpf *sexy dm songs world in my eyes i want you now in your room i feel you happiest girl master and servant fly on the windscreen behind the wheel blue dress *best songs while driving question of time rush told you so halo photographic (some bizarre version) big muff work hard fools never let me down again (aggro mix) not dm, but any vcmg songs from ssss
Thought top 2 songs couldn´t be anything other than NLMD and ETS then followed by Stripped. 2 songs I´d think would be deserving top 10 or at least an honorable mention that didn´t is Higher Love, live version and then the one song from DM after Alan´s departure that is actually excellent: Should be higher.
Great band and for me is Personal Jesus sort of a pivoting point. Before and after...both nice eras but different. First era a bit of adolescent optimism and hope. Second era seasoned with life I'd discribe it. Top 10 songs with most bands depend what mood you're in with most of the time the top 3 or so unchanged.
Enjoy the silence was one of the best produces song they ever made. And your last video was amazing, I hated some of the ones you hated too and for the same reasons so can't be a coincidence. some songs are just THAT bad for me tho the nr.1 goes to Policy of truth, truly Violator is a masterpiece, If i have to list my 3 favourite dm albums, i would say 1) violator 2) music for the masses 3) ultra Behind the wheel is one of those songs where the single and album version are so different that you start to love them both for different reasons Stripped is a great song from a very uneven album
In your room has nothing to do with the actual room, yet has to do with dominance, submisivness, sexual satisfaction, role play, devotion, BDSM...goodbye
You are stating the PRETTY OBVIOUS. I think most people in this community are bright enough to understand that the song is not meant to be taken literally. VG
Of course again you can not do it objectively, yet keep adding Alan, Alan, Alan... I admire your videos, you came a long way, kudos to you, but in my opinion you kind of keep shooting yourself in the foot, because the profesionality, educational side of your videos, all the time and energy involved gets diminished or overshadowed by the fact, that you seems so compromised by Alan...I respect your views and opinion but it could be done in more causious kind of way, which would put you in a completely different ball game with your videos... I even signed up for your paid channel but was put off by above mentioned topic. It is a suggestion or just my opinion, but I know a lot of people that are sharing my views. Good luck and keep up the great energy that you put in your videos..DM FOREVER with or without Alan, live drums or pre-programmed drums....
Thank You for your kind words but you need to respect and understand difference of opinion. I am here to authentic, not to please everyone. I'm sure you are intelligent enough to understand this. VG

I would LOVE a Depeche Mode licensed Vaughn record of Depeche Mode songs set to piano. Credit Card at the ready.....
I proposed that too in the previous video :D
great list a very underrated but beautiful melodic song on the piano is when the body speaks from exciter
Was this a hard task to make this Top 10? I couldn't do. I would have to separate the 80s/90s from 2000 on. To me they are two different Depeche Modes.
because they are. not in a good comparison way but yeah, after Ultra nothing was the same anymore
Actually "but not tonight" is my personal number one depeche mode song.
With so many gems, never thought possible to narrow only a TOP 10 from DM. For me, a TOP 20 wouldn't be enough.
Honourable mentions!!
Im only sure about my 2 favourites
Shake the Disease
Dangerous
I was going to list my 10 favorites, but then realized that's impossible as there are at least 20+ songs I couldn't leave off a top-10 list! :-D Overall, I agree with "most" of Vaughn's list. In addition to the songs he mentioned, a few others I'd consider for a top 10 include:

Pretty much agree except for one huge unforgivable oversight…..where’s Walking in my shoes !!!!!!! Come on Vaughn……. Not top ten, really????
Haha! I think it's probably my "number 11" pick! It's hard to choose only 10. VG :-)
´Fail’ is underrated !
do you wonder how or why he didn't included any songs post SOFAD?
@@Zontar82 Because he’s a fan of the 1986-1993 era. It’s as simple as that.
Now you have to do a top 10 "After Alan´s departure" list, I challenge you.

Behind the wheel is one of those songs where the single and album version are so different that you start to love them both for different reasons
Stripped is a great song from a very uneven album
Was so sad to not hear shake the disease in the 3 shows I saw in 2023/24
Nothing since 1993 but I'm not arguing 👍
Ultra still had some nics songs imo, after that the abyss
But not tonight is one of my favorites as well 🙂
Oh, come on! Has it always been a tough question - to name top 10 Depeche songs? Age, time, mood etc shuffle them all permanently.
Enjoy the silence should be top 5, not striped
It’s funny your top 10 is in the Alan years and the bottom 10 is post Alan. Hmmmmmmm
