Yes, listen to the boss! I wish I had. I chopped down a huge Tithonia as it had been stewed by frost. Then came the cold spell and the lovely salvia Tubular Bells took a brutal hit and it was heartbreaking. Never mind about tidiness. The insulation provided by strewed plants is invaluable.
Reference the Nerine Bowdenii, that's what happened to mine. My wife got them from Thompson & Morgan. I planted them up in pots, left them on the greenhouse bench because the weather has been poor. Plenty of foliage but no flowers. I had them out side years ago and lost the lot because at that time, I didn't realise they weren't cold hardy.
Thank you very much for this. It would be extremely helpful to have an index to questions so listeners can navigate to the topics they are interested in.
When planting seeds in a plugs it may be possible to make a reuseable cardboard template, with holes punched in a grid to match the layout of the plug tray. The seeds can be brushed across the cardboard to allow one seed to drop into each hole. Similar to how crafters space rhinestones on fabric. This takes a lot of the dexterity and vision issues out of the equation.
Hi Rosie, always useful to hear your advice, thank you. I have an ongoing problem with an insect in my garden, I have identified it as a leaf hopper. They leave white/ translucent dot type marks on array on my plants, including salvias, roses, peppermint, blackberries, all the herbs. I’ve seen pale green tiny insects jumping away when disturbed. I garden with wildlife in mind, so predators, if around, not helping enough. It’s been at least two years now that I’ve seen lots of damage, usually leaves, not flowers, and I am hoping for some advice to tackle this issue. Is there any biological control I could buy in or organic insecticide? Anything really that might be effective. Thank you in advance. I’m in East Midlands, UK
Hi Rosie, hope you are well. Can I ask for your help as I need to hide my ugly heat pump unit in garden, I can’t plant within 2ft of it and it pumps out cold air down to -13c. Can you recommend a suitable plant or shrub to hide it from view please. Many thanks
