Hey @robert - I turned 74 last month and “River” is my #1 Joni favorite. Weren’t we lucky to have been young & to grow up with such fantastic music back then ? That 🎶is what I am thankful for on Thanksgiving 2023…
The first time I heard this song (sometime in the 90s) it was a version done by Robert Downey Junior ;). I had no idea this was a Joni Mitchell song until today.
Hasn't anyone told you that it is impolite to make a grown man cry . Between your soothing contralto and your Heart wrenching falsetto , I think I may just float away into Heaven 🙏💖🙏💖🙏
I’ve never heard anyone doing a Joni Mitchell song who so captures the full embodiment of the spirit of the song. This is not a performance. You took it to a whole new dimension. You encapsulated it’s true essence. No one else I’ve ever heard doing a JM song has done this. No one.
Oh my god, that was beautiful. I've been performing for more than 40 years and I'm just so touched to watch talent shine, glow and radiate the depths of our souls. This was a lovely rendition and I felt it. You don't listen to music, you feel it. Peace and joy be with you.

I’m 71 years old . I fell in love with Joni’s music, well forever ago. You do her proud. It’s as easy listening to you as it it is to Joni. Glad I found your music. Thank you.
I'm 69, loved the original, but this version rocked my soul, your voice found a piece of music you were born to sing....keep it up, your future is skating on that river.
There are some things that are just too Beautiful , that you almost feel like you are cheating " The Game " when you take them in . A Beautiful Sunrise coming over the Mountain , A Sun settling down to sleep into the Ocean ; The first flakes of freshly fallen Snow on a Winters Morning , the Sound of the Silence in the Woods , And the Voice of this Songbird on your Soul ......

Oh my... Sierra, you are a wonderful singer, arranger,.... I'm gonna follow you 'til i die. At 71 i have a few good ones left and want to spend them watching you grow...
Listening again, days before December 2024. A lovely version that I could listen to over and over. Thanks Ms. Eagleson...and Thank you Joni Mitchell. You've been a voice for me for 40 years.
I’ve heard so many renditions of River that can’t quite capture its melancholy and haunting melody. Honestly, this is one of best covers of this incredibly difficult song I’ve heard yet! You nailed it and yet still made it your own! Just beautiful! I hope Joni Mitchell hears it…you would make her proud!
If you're feeling down, having a hard time, and about to give up just listen to these songs and read every lyric and reflect and feel Jesus in your heart....
I'm in a dark place in my life right now and just discovered Sierra and Chase's music today. The fact that I can so deeply enjoy this song gives me hope. Thank you.

Sometimes you come across a rendition of a well known and well covered song that just soars above all the others. This is just so beautiful and achingly melancholy. Absolutely sublime. You completely owned this and it touched my soul. Perfect in every way.
You conveyed a sense of melancholia that even Joni herself didn't capture in the original. I liked the key you did this in, and the tempo was very fitting. Darker, heavier - you let the song breathe more, I think. Great job.
While I can't disagree with your comment (Sierra did a stunning cover), I'd like to point out a few things. One, Joni was in her 20's when she wrote and released this song. Two, even Joni interprets her own songs differently than when she was young. It seems to me that she penned and performed many songs that she would grow into, make more space for. A great example is the difference in how "Both Sides Now" was performed in her young years and how she performed it decades later: th-cam.com/video/tKQSlH-LLTQ/w-d-xo.html. The living of life deepens everything for each of us. Joni has been my favorite artist, bar none, for 50 years now. While I have always loved her music, her art, I have a much deeper understanding of it all now that I've lived more life.
@@eyesofbeholder I'm not sure of your meaning. Is it that, if Sierra infuses the song with more emotion than did Joni, it's maybe because Joni was still young and lacked maturity? I think this is what you're saying, but I'm not sure.
Oh how we wish we all had a River to skate away on during the holidays. So stressful when it should really be so joyous. Sad memories for so many too… 💕😍💕
I grew up with Joni’s music...there is no other...until today. Your voice is your own yet embodies everything wild and beautiful that was Joni’s as well. Thank you for giving her back to us!
Also grew up with Joni & she remains my number one decades later. Sierra, you are my joy, light on this grey day - I've listened to music for decades & feel your talents will be recognized as you grow musically, age like a fine wine -- as Joni might say 'I love your vibe, kid' Shine on!
I must say, I generally avoid Joni Mitchell covers, simply because Joni's voice is so distinct that I don't believe anyone can ever live up to it, but I am so glad I clicked on this! This was hauntingly beautiful & moving!
AI always helps to explain the lyrics to me so eloquently. “River” by Joni Mitchell is a melancholic and introspective song that reflects on themes of regret, longing, and personal loss. Set against the backdrop of Christmas, the song expresses a desire to escape emotional pain and sorrow. The lyrics reference a failed relationship, with the narrator lamenting her role in its downfall and wishing for a way to metaphorically “fly away.” The imagery of the river serves as a symbol of escape and cleansing. It represents the narrator’s yearning to be freed from her burdens, allowing her to leave her troubles behind. This contrast between the festive season and the narrator’s internal sadness makes “River” a poignant and relatable song for many who experience loneliness or reflection during the holidays. When Joni Mitchell sings, “I wish I had a river I could skate away on,” she’s expressing a desire to escape from her emotional turmoil and difficult circumstances. The river symbolizes a path away from the pain she’s feeling, offering a way to leave her regrets and sadness behind. The mention of skating away implies a sense of effortless movement-gliding away smoothly, almost as if she could erase everything in her past as she moves forward. This line captures the longing to distance herself from a place and time that no longer feels joyful, making it a powerful metaphor for wanting to flee from heartache.
I grew up blocks away from the mighty Mississippi-a profound experience that runs deep in my soul and psyche decades after I left its comforting environs. It takes me back and reminds me of long drives along the Great River Road anytime and water skiing in summer
Oh Sierra, it was truly beautiful. I am 68 years old and your rendering is more moving to me than the original was…back in the day. I wish I could purchase your version.💕
Yeah, I really love the cover Ben Platt made as well. But yeah, this is a gorgeous cover as well. This one is more emotional and Ben's version is a bit more theatrical.

You know Joni is like Bob Dylan, they only wrote music about themselves and their personal experiences. Imagine how the man that Joni was lamenting about feels every time he hears that song … we all make mistakes in life … I’m sure the day he broke-up with Joni will go down as one of his worst mistakes. Can you even imagine what it would be like to have the love and attention of another human being of a quality like sweet Joni Mitchel … He was so fortunate to have had the time he did … live long Sweet Woman, you have inspired me for many years and every time I hear you sing Joni’s work it’s like a time warp and I’m 20 years old once more. I thank you again.
The tone she sings the word 'sky' in, sounds like Joni, a tone my heart wants to cry out nonstop forever, one long river sounding through time from the heart of humanity 💗
Russ DeAnna maybe. But there just will never be another Joni Mitchell...or perhaps any other artist from the Laurel Canyon era. I just ref Moby Dick since this song is that ambitious.
After I had given birth to my daughter, started grieving my old life and who I was as a person before having a child, and moving through postpartum depression, I listened to this song so many times because it was the only thing that saw me.
River -Sierra Eagleson. Takes me back to my childhood home at Christmas time. So beautiful. If I could marry a song, this would be the one. Sierra, you have an awesome gift.
The Voice!!!!!! God this lady sings like an angle, her voice cuts through me like a knife and lets me travel to someplace I've never been before. It's almost too haunting, I'm at a loss for words.
I'm crying like a baby. I've loved Blue since it came out. Beyond Joni's performance is her genius song-writing that allows so much scope for interpretation. This version is magnificent - darker and sadder, more like I feel today.
I have always been drawn to sad music. A year and a half ago my son was killed in a hiking accident. I always felt so comfortable with him at my side. I tend to dwell in grief and this song puts me there every time. I guess I’m looking for a river that I could skate away on
Han reality. Thank you for reaching out to me. I am leaving the cemetery now. I was fortunate for having him for 20 years and 10 days. I could not possibly have loved him any more than I did. If you would like to read about him you can look up Conor J Long. Even so proud of him now. I wish you the best and kindness from a stranger is soothing......Brian
I'm learning to live again after my World fell apart a couple of years ago and I find comfort now in music even more than I did before. I found this version by accident as I am a singer and I was looking for a version that I could sing myself. In a word, beautiful.
Only when I'm wide open do I come back and listen to Sierra sing this song. The beauty that her voice channels goes right to my soul. Sierra transcends mere talent. She has the magic of the angels.
I come back to this quite often, and still never find words to describe what this does to me... goosebumps every time... I catch myself humming along to it without even knowing it... Love your singing Sierra...
Every so often, I have to come back to Sierra's version of this song. - It still brings me to tears. - Still my favorite song she's done. She has the voice of an angel!
La tua storia the River di Joni Mitchell e profonda come il pianto di un ricordo infinito,la malinconia non ha fine e Sierra la suona e la canta divinamente per questa cover piena di diamanti.🌷🌷♥️🎶🎶🎶👍
Oh my. I am not sure what to say. That was spectacular. You sing like an angel. You remind me of all the times I ever fell in love, and one of those times was many years ago when the album Blue came out and it had this song on it. God Bless you for your beautiful voice. You brought tears to my eyes.
God it’s not just the vocals, the keys, or the lyrics that get me with this one sierras face I feel that feeling and know those facial feelings. Shits all beautiful.
So many others have said it but I want to add my name to the obvious: this is the most extraordinarily beautiful interpretation of the Joni Mitchell classic I have ever heard.

I'm crying like a baby. I've loved Blue since it came out. Beyond Joni's performance is her genius song-writing that allows so much scope for interpretation. This version is magnificent - darker and sadder, more like I feel today.
Come back to this every Christmas - still the most beautiful cover ❤
I have always been drawn to sad music. A year and a half ago my son was killed in a hiking accident. I always felt so comfortable with him at my side. I tend to dwell in grief and this song puts me there every time. I guess I’m looking for a river that I could skate away on
Brian, I’m so sorry. Our children are our greatest beauty and blessing. I’m so sorry.
I'm an old guy who's been listening to Joni Mitchell for nearly 40 years, BUT THIS IS INCREDIBLE!
I'm learning to live again after my World fell apart a couple of years ago and I find comfort now in music even more than I did before. I found this version by accident as I am a singer and I was looking for a version that I could sing myself. In a word, beautiful.
hang in there!
Hold on💕
Wow, first time I hear someone cover Joni Mitchell and embodies the whole essence and depth of a Joni song. So beautiful, moving ... hats off !
Only when I'm wide open do I come back and listen to Sierra sing this song. The beauty that her voice channels goes right to my soul.
Sierra transcends mere talent. She has the magic of the angels.
Wow, Joni Mitchell is so difficult to emulate but you did a fantastic job. So much soul. You really made this beautiful song your own. Cheers
This is a very good rendition of an amazing song. I still come back to listen and enjoy. Thank you, Sierra.
I have heard this version of this song by Sierra over two dozen times in the past year. I just can’t get tired of it.
This made me cry! and I’m a 19 year old male! All I can say is damn what a good job!

I am 52 and I am crying even more reading all the comments as I realised what an Angel can do for so many people’s hearts!
What a wonderful, touching version....and what a voice! Best wishes
😢 it always makes me cry when the music is that beautiful
This is a cover that was worth making. Truly beautiful.
I'm a big Joni fan but you really have outdone the original! in French we say "chapeau"
La tua storia the River di Joni Mitchell e profonda come il pianto di un ricordo infinito,la malinconia non ha fine e Sierra la suona e la canta divinamente per questa cover piena di diamanti.🌷🌷♥️🎶🎶🎶👍
4 years later i would like to thanks again for your art. Amazing Sierra. Thanks.
No words. Joni Mitchell I'm sure it's very happy right now as am I. Thank you. Beyond brilliant.
Beautiful... I am so very glad I stumbled across Sierra's TH-cam channel. And also Chase Eagleson's.
Admittedly, I"m a Joni worshiper..You've added such nuance to this magical song.. Thank you.
she catch's the most subtle details of Joni ... and even takes them to the next level... Perfect!
Another of my favorites. Good Lord what a gorgeous voice. Makes me “weak in the knees…”
Tears each time I listen to this magical performance - tears of joy and aching and wonder
Oh my. I am not sure what to say. That was spectacular. You sing like an angel. You remind me of all the times I ever fell in love, and one of those times was many years ago when the album Blue came out and it had this song on it. God Bless you for your beautiful voice. You brought tears to my eyes.
Simply beautiful !

I could listen to that voice all day everyday
So many others have said it but I want to add my name to the obvious: this is the most extraordinarily beautiful interpretation of the Joni Mitchell classic I have ever heard.
Holy mother earth, you are a gift send from the universe, to brighten up every moment that you decide to use this beautiful voice of yours.
Her voice translates this beautiful timeless song into magic.
