TC's style was really my all time favorite. A master of the craft who stayed true to himself into, through and beyond the pro circuit circus. Another awesome memory dislodger from the surf film master TR!
When I was a kid my friend and I rode our bikes to surf the cove at Rincon. We would wait for guys like Tom Curren or Shawn Thompson ETC. We would drop in in front of them for 1 second then kick out and say we surfed a wave with Tom Curren LOL. Tom lived right next door to my Friend and we were always afraid to talk to him. The place he is doing the talk interview is the spot we lived in Carpinteria.
THE definitive surfer is low key, adaptable to any situation and lets his waves do the talking. He usually rides around in a beater truck with no gas and no worries about how he's going to get home. Surf is first. There might be one or two at every beach around the world. One of Rincon's happens to be the one that broke the mold his dad made before him, a generational surfer from the roots of performance surfing. He became a World Champion despite his desire to hang out in the background like the most core of core. Tom Curren, surfer.
He has a natural talent to surf and compete but it seens to deslike that position. He is a shy man with a simple life that conflites with a world champion.
Keeping in mind the evolution of the sport itself, and the type of board(s) he was riding back then andwhat's out there now (epxy computer shapes etc. ) . . . . pretty insane. I'd never 'compare' Tom's surfing to any other surfer , becasue it's apples to oranges . . . I can appreciate all aspects of performance past and present. But it is undeniable how far ahea he was in not only in talent, but style and ability . . . using almost every part of the wave. Truly a pleasure to watch Tom surf.
I remember Tom when he was probably around 6 or 7 years old, surfing at Hammond’s , SB. We were surprised he was there all by himself ! His parents must have known how capable he was , even at that age. He didn’t do anything fancy then, but his wave judgement was spot-on . Amazing .
Yes!!! I surfed with Tom in Boys and Juniors division of the WSA and his freakish wave knowledge was there from day one, way before the amazing surfing kicked in.
I lived on Danielson road in the 60s early 70s right where you would cut through and cross the railroad tracks to get to hammonds meadow. He kept a board right up the street at a friend's house that he could easily grab. Hammond's meadow was a beautiful place big open grassy field without all the condos, there was even a little forest in the middle of it back then.
We were coming back from a morning session at the Ventura Fairgrounds and stopped at Rincon to check it out. Didn't see him out there and when we were about to leave Curren came walking up the trail and was parked a couple spots from us. I seem to recall us thinking that the truck he was driving was one that he won in the OP Pro or something like that. I think it was said that at Rincon he gets whatever waves he wants. In that first wave of the video, it's funny when everyone else sees him and they all drop out.
tom came to Perth western Australia in1983 for pro contest he came out second car parks and just ripping everyone stopped surfing to watch it was amazing
is it me or Curren in 1987 surfs better than everyone on tour in 2024, 2023, or in 2000-whenever? seriously? this wave 2:00 in Rincon is better than anything in similar size and conditions that anyone surfed on tour for the past 2 decades. I don't care if filipe flies or whatever. Curren has the flow, the grace and everything else. WOW
I used to surf like that in the early 80's. Had a 5'7.5" Fox surfboards from Lake Worth FL. It had pink and black tiger stripes, twin fin, swallow tail and ripping turns.
@@cjenki45 The board was nearly as magical as the 6'5" Dick Brewer quad fin surfboard or the 6'8" Art Colyer shaped Third World Exotic. So long ago that I cannot recall how many fin were on the Art Colyer board. The Brewer was the best board that I ever had. It could go to the steepest places of a wave with ease and make the drop every time.
I remember watching the Stubbies finals at Oceanside. It is hard to believe they actually had contests there because it really is a crappy wave but those guys made it look good.
What I foubd was that there were always 3 to 4 guys in the lineup that were better than Curran. Because you went the competition route doesn't make you the best.
3 to 4 guys better than curren? in the lineup? like, just, on any given day? tell me just ONE that is not called occy, pottz or carroll. and tell me what wine are you drinking mate cause I want some of that

Tom is style, precision, and grace personified. No one has ever looked better on a wave. 🌊🤙
Tommy Curren is a Hero & Legend, Surfing Royalty.Personified.
So fluid, no wasted motions, understated style. Todays surfers could learn a thing or two
AND THREE AND FOUR
Yeah right. I'm old school been around, seen miles of film too. Dont get me started : )
One of my more fond memories of surfing is getting the nod to go on one at lanis from the legend tom Curren!

That first segment....I watched that a million times back in the 80's, but can't recall what film it was in back then.

@@RealSurfStories OH GOD THANKS
Great stuff. I'm so stoked
Simon Andersson's Tri Fin and Curren combined and came into its own in the 80's! The Greatest of Times!

Classic. Yeah the guy in the red wetty that he toasted was my buddy.
Top of my generation !

The way the judging was at the Trestles WSL final last year, he would have won.
At the 11:11 min mark where is this TR ? The two TC’s shredding the pier.
O'Side. They were warming up for the Stubbies.
Amazing year
I love that shade of red, white. I think Kelly Slater might object to your statement, but Curren was extremely "fluid" and graceful.
I believe you are correct, but my statement was disclaimed with "perhaps" and Kelly usually mentions Tom and Bertlemann when asked.
it neverr gets old, tommy revoltionized the sport
Tom Curren was probably the most stylish surfer of the pre tow in era.
For me, and I'm 62...Mark Richards & Tom Curren.
PRE TOWN IN ERA? what is that ff sake?? are you gonna allow that fucking TOW IN bullshit to be used to define surfing eras?

The Michelangelo of the waves!
Top Brass.
taji just moved out there do some content with him
Guy has the best bottum turn on the buisnes and knows how to read a wave . No airs. Love it
Template for 90% of modern surfing, right there.
He's way better than Kelly slater 🤙🙏
Black beauty square tail...
Also an iconic board!
@@RealSurfStories tommy carrol was also nearly showing up current in this vid, i recon. both iconic surfers
