Leaving the UK for a better life in Thailand EP 14 | Flat goes on the market - Shocked at the price

  • ** Please note, I left the UK in February 2024. I'm showing these videos because I was asked how I made the move **
This was recorded in January 2024 when I finally got the flat on the market.
All my hard work had paid off but it came at a price, I was mentally and physically drained and the pains in my foot, leg and back were at an all-time high.
As you know, I now live in Thailand and I'm determined to stay here forever. I can not touch the money I got from the sale of the flat, that is invested for Chloe to enjoy when I'm gone. All I have is my personal savings and this will run out eventually unless I can build my channel back to where it was before.
If you want to see the uncut and longer videos, please consider joining me on Patreon www.patreon.com/vortecks

I think it’s a mistake to sell up and move. You can find an honest agent to manage your place. To sell is final. And property is only going up in value. And you are getting older. How about medical care in Thailand. Grave mistake.

    • @Vortecks

Seeing as you took the time to construct something properly (instead of the usual "don't sell, rent" comments without explanation) I'll take the time to reply in full:-
I've been living in Thailand since the middle of February this year and I got paid out for the flat/apartment 6 months ago. I've honestly never looked back and this has been the most relaxing 6 months of my life, I don't have a worry in the world :)
I couldn't rent it out, due to it having such a low EPC rating (F - the minimum is E). I could have spent £15k (money I didn't have) and brought it up to level 'C' so it would have been rentable but this is the highest EPC level that it could have ever been (due to constructional limitations) but even so, it would never completely conform to the forthcoming 'net zero' state that the government want every property to comply with. As a homeowner, I would then have to pay an additional 'tax fine' and no one knows how much that will be yet.
Also, being a flat, it is highly likely that the government would take control and use it for housing asylum seekers or it's possible that the tenant could trash the place. I'd have to fork out a lot of money to have the place redecorated. If it was occupied by someone claiming benefits (very likely) I have to wait until the tenants want to leave before I can sell it, rather than serving them notice and the thought of someone trashing my own possession was too much to handle.
Plus which, I'd have to pay 40% tax on rent as an expat which would wipe out any profit.
Once a property is put up for rent, it becomes a personal income. As such, if I wanted to sell the property after a number of months/years I'd be liable for capital gains tax at 24% because it would be void of any 'private residence relief'. I would have needed to rent it out for at least 12 years (at the current rate of property price inflation) to get the same amount back as I did when it sold (Value in 12 years minus Capital Gains Tax equals the price I got paid today) but the money I got is now in an investment account and earning interest.
If I wanted to move over here, my only option was to sell it and staying in the UK was not an option, due to health reasons. I'm not saying that every person is in the same boat, most people will be fine with a little nest-egg but I couldn't keep it because I felt that it would have become a real money-pit and a worry I could do without.
I don't regret selling it, people think that renting is easy when it's not - you can't just rent it out for 12 months and then decide to sell it because you lose a massive percentage in Capital Gains Tax. If I'd waited 12 years when it was worth a lot more, I'd still get the same amount of cash as I did when I sold it.
I'll pin your comment so others can see the reasonings why I did what I did.........

@tony have you checked about medical over there and how it works. As in price I know they offer a "basic" public package for all citizens, as for the UK. I agree something will happen because the working class will only put up with so much like a pressure cooker looks all quiet on the surface but the pressure is building, NHS can not cope with the influx I need treatment and in past 5 years I've had well especially past 2 years had appointment upon appointment cancelled. With no reason even when I asked, too many mouths to feed from the tax pile.if people want want to be on the dole nothing wrong with them and pretending they have a headache or backache you can pick up waste and rubbish, clean buildings for your money. If you don't like it get proper employment, people come to the country you have to work a minimum of 5 years to get NHS treatment. Otherwise you will have to pay for a basic plan. Same for no benefits from the government. And if you come here in a rubber dingy "illegally" then sorry but you can not stay. Especially with no papers. The longer this country carries on like this the harsher the treatment. If I wore a tinfoil hat I'd say the government wants it to go to crap so they can bring in martial law or more Draconian rules.

I have basic medical and I have insurance from the bank. Apart from that, I'm self insuring because I'm not paying the massive excess that all insurance companies expect you to pay.
in the UK, only 3 years ago, a simple operation like a hernia was performed without problems but now, they won't even do that because of cut-backs. I have 2 friends who are in agony because of hernias and they refuse to treat them unless they become strangulated (which is life threatening).
The influx of immigrants into the country is by design mate. They have plenty of opportunities to stop them from coming but NOTHING has been done, it's the fuel the next generation which won't have a middle class, just a lower and upper class because the middle class still have a voice which causes the establishment problems.
In 4 years time, the UK won't be anything like it is now, I'm sure of it.

I'd point out that someone saying we can take care of everything means they are probably charging a premium for it. Just this week a visit to the vet she said I' can give you this' a small bag of dog food. My thoughts were elsewhere and I presumed it was free, an incentive to buy more in the future. That 1.5kg bag was £50 added to the bill! I didn't realise until days later. Bloody dog wont touch it and she's not a fussy eater.

@Vortecks In 1984 I was so sick of the prison called the UK I left with a couple of thousand quid in American Express travelers checks, literally, and caught a plane for New Jersey. I had got to such a point with the UK that I was ready to either find a new life or die. I ended up in many extremely dangerous situations in the USA and Latin America but I didn't care. We are all on a one way ticket. The time we have is precious. Being stuck in a miserable, immigrant infested communist in all but name country is not a wise use of your or my time.
I know Thailand well. It is not paradise and nowhere as cheap as the spin tells us. HOWEVER it is about a million times better than the UK.
Sometimes you have to throw the chips on the table and they land as they may. You have done that and I respect that. I have read the comments and the idiots telling you to not sell and rent are not in your head. They do not know all the intricate angles of your situation as you do.
I ended up becoming an American citizen. I have now lived here for 40 plus years. I regret nothing. With just a little money and at the point that the next step was death I made it work. YOU CAN TOO. Don't spend all your time in bars in LOS. Stay away from the Thai gold diggers and make a life for yourself. As you well know now accommodation can be super cheap often with breakfast thrown in. The food in the markets and on the street is good and again cheap. There is company there if you choose to seek it out. I made lifelong friends there.
As for health the commenters do make a valid point. Thai dental care is not good but the hospitals and doctors are perfectly adequate. You will need insurance though. These negative morons in the comments just do not see your desperation and unhappiness like do. There comes a point that it is do or die no matter what the possible dire outcome. Take a little joy out of life then bow out with grace ad dignity. I respect you.
Where do I live??? I write to you from my camper in northern Mississippi. I wander America following the weather. Wyoming, Colorado and Montana in the summer and Arizona in the winter. I owe nothing. Everything was liquidated over 5 years ago. I live frugally and happily.
LIFE IS TOO PRECIOUS TO LIVE IN MISERY. I am almost certain that your medical issues will improve in time due to the lack of stress and climate. I doubt I will return to Thailand but who knows. Maybe I will bump into you in Pattaya or in the Jomtien immigration office.
Take heart my friend because nobody gets out of this alive and nobody knows the future. Enjoy each day as if it was your last and for the love of god stay away from the grog. It is so easy to become an alky in both the UK and Thailand. It is poison. Moderation is the key. Best wishes from America.
    Izi.

Labour will try a money grab at the next budget, but when the boomers and their assets are gone, and the inheritance tax paid, what then? I first went to live in Thailand in 2003, and it was a great decision. I've spent most of the last 20 years living outside of UK, although I did keep a base in UK (Family). I moved to Thailand in 2006, both places have pros and cons, the UK is great if you have plenty of friends and close family, and of course money. Thailand is fine, weather is good here which is the main thing for me, after my first marriage to a Thai I gave up trying to fit in with the Thais, they just are not that interested unless there's money involved so it's nice if you can get some western mates to hang out with, the canabis here will help with your pain too.

Mate, first time I watched your channel (this video). I utterly agree with everything you are saying, and if I had the chance I'd move to Thailand or Spain. I spent a month in Spain in August. The heat agreed with my arthritis. The supermarket had fresh fruit that tasted delicious and for half the price of England same for other foodstuffs. England is finished. Its a cesspit. We only live to pay money to corporations who demand premium prices for basics like water, gas and electricity. Council tax for non existent services. Depressing myself now. Best of luck mate.

I've lived in Thailand for nearly 10 months now mate and I've seriously never looked back. The food over here has 100 times the taste of UK food. Electric is 8p a unit, water is 68p a unit, petrol is 77p a litre and I could rent a bungalow for 12 months and it would still be cheaper than the monthly rent on a 1 bedroom flat anywhere near a city in the UK. Oh and the 2630 hours of sunshine a year compared to 1493 is perfect for old bones.

Sounds similar to Australia, the government let's far too many immigration in with little to no english, or work skills..some cannot even read basic english !
Zero reconised Qualifications then the government looks after them better than their own people/ permanent residents.
Meanwhile Australia has a extremely high cost of living & House Shortage as a result of Tradesmen shortages.
I believe the government should use this wasted money & focus on providing "incentives" to both the Companies through new Apprenticeships & Young Residents just out of school like tool allowance, and a bonus for completing each year of Apprenticeships etc. to entice them into "Valuable Trade & Apprenticeships thus more Tradesmen which build the essential buildings & infrastructure, services we need both now & the long term future. I can imagine the UK is of a similar problem from what your describing.
