Say it again Mr daxdigitalus? So all will hear! Bravo! How sad that by 2017, there should be a retrograde ideology. This is why Mr. Marx would roll in his grave... The broader politic [yes, even left] simply turn over to micro-Kantian socialism; that is to say, racist/nationalist/collectivist political movements are all 'the rage.' Very hip indeed. 13:28 "This isn't a strange road..." etc.. Friedman was an excellent economist, optimistist, rhetorical genius, and his smile is so disarming.
The Left always make arguments that everyone else knew about four generations before. Today's left love talking abut special interest groups, corporate welfare, too big to fail bail outs, socialism for the rich Etc ... like it's all a big revelation and super intelligent news that only they are privy to. Friedman was talking about this all along and pointed out that it's all cyclical anyway. The Labour Party in the UK, 1945, were introducing ideas that Bismark supported in 1869 and Bismark was accused of being a reactionary by his own Kaiser back then. The British Conservative Party supported these ideas back in the 19th century also. Marx referred to these ideas as Reactionary ideas, like Christian Socialism, Feudal Socialism and Petite-Bourgeois Socialism in 'The Communist Manifesto' 1848. The Left now claim it all as their ideas now. 19th century reactionary programmes are radical progressive left-wing ideas in 21st century, Pffff.
And nowadays we have on television: reality shows, discussions about peoples' sex changes, the trivial rantings of vain celebrities. Even when it comes to more serious tv, you get science shows that talk down to their audience, history programs with more "dramatic reconstruction" than discussion of facts, etc., etc. I'm actually old enough to remember shows like this on UK tv too. I can remember when Channel 4 in the UK started, they used to have a late night discussion show where a bunch of intelligent people - Left, Right, scientists, businesspeople, artists, religionists - would get together with a drink and a smoke to discuss serious issues into the night, without any format or structure - just an open intellectual agora. I can't even imagine the possibility of such a thing now.
+gurugeorge Well the free market should come in if people wanted to see such a program, theoretically, to fill the gap in the market. But in the UK you do have programs like Question Time or Newsnight... This particular program is similar to what Charlie Rose does in the US... (Incidentally all those are government funded programs, BBC and PBS)
***** Interestingly, in the early days, Channel 4, while ultimately responsible to a public organization, was self-funding at the time when it had programs like the one I mentioned, and lots of minority and quite left-wing political programming. It was cheaply-made stuff, but varied, and some was very interesting - and quite careless of censorship. It became more "commercial" (in the sense of having more cookie-cutter, mainstream programming) when it came under the direct control of a more well-endowed, purpose-built public service broadcasting corporation. The history is complicated, but as with many things, it's basically the gummint's fault :)
No matter what happens from here-on out, we can't let it become forgotten...even if collectivism takes society down with it. The worst thing we can do is let this perspective die out. The very real will to actual freedom.
He mentions his nobel prize which Milton won in 1976. So no this is NOT very early at all. There are a whole bunch of videos here on You Tube featuring a much earlier Milton.
Dr Friedman would not be surprised whatsoever at our 2022 predicament. He warned us over & over & over. America had 2 choices- Freedom or a little bit of comfort. We chose temporary comfort. Our grandkids will be coolies.
lol you caught that huh? had to change my name on here when I argue with sjw's they always bring up my ethnicity but now they bring it up assuming I'm white can never win ha
I just came to the comments to make friends. Make sure you guys beget children and educate them in this wisdom. That's the only way we'll turn this idiocracy around!
When I noticed Milton said that more liberalist ideals where in campus and intellectual circles, it got me thinking that it was the opposite of what the overall public opinion was, or at least the vocal public opinion. It is noticable today when we see socialist ideals in campus and more conservatist ideals in the public sphere leading to the uprise of right-wing parties such as the Tea Party, UKIP and the French National Front.
You are not alone! We are a minority because of the lack of a true education in this country and elsewhere. The internet is our new bullhorn. We must now race the gov't trying to stomp on enlightenment here (the internet) by spreading the word.
Actually, it´s not that early, it´s around 1976 - 1977. But it looks old because of the grey image. I love this video because of the open discussion, even though i profoundly disagree with his ideas.
Does anyone know what the rates are now of federal spending vs. income that Friedman references at 18:00-19:00? "Until 1928 federal, state, and local spending never exceeded 10% of our income with the exception of the Civil War & WWI." At the time of this recording, he said it was 40%. Where is it now?
On a gov website, I read 23%. But I checked historical data, and it lists it at 30 something in the 70s, and almost 40 in 2020. The difference, I think, is state spending.
This is not a very early interview, it was made after he got his Nobel prize. Just because it is in black and white doesn't mean that it is centuries old. This was aired around the time he gave his famous FTC lectures.
While not completely true, for the sake of argument if we say it’s true China is currently subsiding the cost of many products for other countries such as Electric cars, solar panels etc. Western firms may have closed partly because of unfair competition but China is indebted today as a result
Damn Milly, fux that cowlick bro. Otherwise speaking some interesting points I'll reference next time I get into a verbal battle with a socialist/collectivist (too many of those nowadays).
I could listen to Friedman ALL DAY. I fear I am a strange minority in the US now.
same. he's a genius! same with Thomas Sowell
With you

1956. If this were aired in 2014 it would still be more relevant than any cable news broadcast I have seen.

Can't be 1956. Probably 1976
daxdigitalus It's 1976 or 77 Carter is President
I feel like Mr. Friedman understood the meaning of freedom.
I agree, Milton talks "common sense" but it ain't so common anymore !
The only thing wrong with this video is the low amount of views.
And how the picture stutters periodically like at 5:34.
well share it widely!!!
A brilliant analyst not of economy but of human nature itself and the way to control for the inevitable biases that accompany it through economics.
Milton Friedman has always been an old man... wtf.
Lol, he has been old since the 1950s... but he still made it until 2006! What a beast
Jews don't stew
what i was thinking as well.
Except in his eyes. His eyes were always young with a twinkle that indicated a mind active and searching.
You must be American...good grief.

Yes, very well spotted.

6:15 That line of thinking is sadly not dead. The U.S. is heading in that direction.
Mega genius right here
Milton Friedman was a Rockstar! Truly one example of why God gave us 2 ears. Proverbs 25:11. A word fitly spoken…
this is the best milton ive found yet
And now the police are coming into your house to break up Christmas. We were warned.

There's an interview of Ayn Rand on TH-cam from the late 60's or early 70's, she said at the time that the Universities were taken over by the Left.
The quantitative theory of money's assumptions was changed in the 1980s by the Monetarists, a school of thought which was represented by Friedman.

"Govt spending when exceeds 40% of income is awful alot". He would have laughed 🤣 his way to death if was alive in 2020-21

Title: “A Nobel Laureate on the American Economy”

Milton Friedman was 44 when this came out. His age seems almost static throughout the next few years.
64

The intro is kind of eery lol

This interviewer is very annoying. When he interviewed Sowell, he was also disrespectful and antagonistic.
