I loved this show, then I grew up and realised how problematic some things were.

Some things in ANTM was problematic.
Things were not extremely politically correct as they are now, people didn’t use to get offended by EVERYTHING a decade ago as they do nowadays

I used to be so obsessed with this show. Then I realized how awful the girls, then eventually guys, were treated. Yikes. I still love the photos and the contestants, but Tyra is a monster. Remember when she was rooting for you?? She does.

I’m glad the blackface shoot was number one bc that was beyond awful. Even as a kid I thought it was wrong. But it should have been followed up with the blackface photo shoot from season 4. That’s right, antm did blackface twice!
THIS. I feel like because it was 2004 people were less culturally aware and kind of just forgot about it because they only bring up the one from season 13. But yes, when I was rewatching season 4, I was like "damn are they really making the girls different races?"

I’m starting to think that ANTM has probably gained a few enemies in the modeling industry by promoting the idea that said industry is a place where models aren’t treated as humans, consent doesn’t matter, and they need to just do as they’re told even if it means health issues and assault. Are there issues and problematic people? Of course there are, just like any major industry really. But God knows Tyra did not get where she did by being as passive as she and Jay demanded these girls be.
Modeling industry is generally far worse than ANTM.

To be fair, I really enjoyed the Circus Freaks shoot, actually my favorite shoot from Cycle 7!! Weirdest and worst was Covergirl’s floating in the wind tunnel shoot. And, the one from Cycle 16 shooting with the bees gave them really awesome photos.
But it reality they would photoshop the bees in. Same with the wind tunnel-- no one would shoot live on location in a wind tunnel.

Can we talk about how, from more than one season, when the girls had to do their first commerical and understandably didn't do well, Tyra would get frustrated and express disappointment at how bad they were, when a good majority of the models had zero acting experience? That's happened on more than one occasion, and it always made ke mad to see her be so hard on the contestants if they didn't perfectly ace a photoshoot that some super talented and experienced models would struggle with
Deidre Betts not to mention the ones where they have to learn a new language or use an accent, and we’re expected to be perfect at it.
I remember that in Cycle 21, Tyra gave Lennox a 1 score just because she refused to pose sexy. And Lenox is just an introvert girl and it's really hard for an introvert to get out from their comfort zone.
That wind tunnel photoshoot was one of the worst outcomes.
Tyra actually tortured the young ladies far more than Naomi Campbell ever wronged Tyra. IJS.

Candice Honeycutt same. I remember there was an episode and he was talking to all the girls and he said something along the lines of when he wakes up, all the Forrest animals come to his window like Snow White. 😂😂 I knew then I would be obsessed with him. And I cannot even begin to talk about how talented of a makeup artist he is. So glad he/she gets the attention and recognition he/she deserves.

@Joan of Arc I just watched a video of ANTM where white girls were wearing darker foundations to look African, even going as far as posing with black children, that to me is blackface, even going as far to praise these white women for "representing" these cultures such as African and African-American

Actually, Tyra did the 'black face' photoshoot twice! She did it first at Cycle 4 for Got Milk commercial and the girls were holding children with them. The white girls were giving the black face while the black girls were giving the light makeup. I'm not kidding, that actually happened.
They did white black asian Native American many different cultures why does only the black bother you if it’s about being what you aren’t shouldn’t the non white girls in white face or non Asian girls in Asian face bother everyone too?

Undoubtedly, number 1 is the weirdest photoshoot. The greek salad, dominique was beautiful in that photoshoot. The tarantula shoot, it was one of the best! I can still remember the final shots of eva, nicole, amanda and yaya. Those were beautiful.

The girls made the greek salad photoshoot work but it was such a waste of tomatoes and feta cheese! Also, it's like they didn't think about it twice. If they have travelled in Japan they would have posed on a gigantic maki roll? They could have thought dozens of better themes to shoot in Greece!
Despite what anyone says, Dominique KILLED that shot. It actually could've been used as a tourism ad for Aegean Airlines.
Don't forget in that episode, Shannon refused to do photoshoot. Because she has a 'concept of mind' that she doesn't do underwear because it makes her uncomfortable and because she is a Christian blablablabla.... My God, That Underwear drama is so stupid.

Well when it comes to doing the whole mixed raced photo shoots it's been done multiple times on the show in different seasons
I used to like watching this show just so I could laugh at it.
Even as a 14yr old I knew there was a lot of wrong with this show. The photographers always rubbed me the wrong way, being very passive aggressively mean.
Especially the asian photographer with the girl with vitiligo. He kept calling her panda or something and they made him out to be the victim.
I really liked the Circus Freaks shoot and the Tarantula shoot. I hate spiders, so I had to applaud Eva for doing that. Her pictures were amazing

I actually find 7 deadly sins photoshoot weird too. The idea of portraying sins was okay but putting the girls into the grave wasn't! And it happened right after Kahlen had lost her friend. Coincidence? I don't think so.

I don’t think it was a coincidence either the production team must of known of her call going through
Mister Jay said on Jay's Chat that both Kahlen's coffin shoot and Jael's dead hotel shoot (both after their friends died) was completely coincidental. He planned these shoots well in advance, sometimes before girls were even cast.

The hot dog photo shoot actually had a cute theme, it's just the way they justified it was a bit of a stretch.
The bee photo shoot, as crazy as it was, actually ended up looking quite high fashion imo.
The Kris Jenner shoot had an amazing colorful set and good photography but I agree the theme was......odd to say the least

I think the weirdest was that one where they wore milk moustaches and had to hold multiple babies....That was a weird one. And a special mention to that one where they were mermaids flipped upside down in a giant net in the middle of a floating market lol.

Some of the photo shoots could help them if they got more modelling jobs after the show like the shots with animals, kids or spiders but often are models suspended in the air with wires, laying down in a puddle of water or food?

We have an Indian version of this problematic show. In the second season, right from the 1st episode a participant was mocked for being "too skinny". And a wild card entry was bashed by judges as well as participants for being "too curvey to be a model". 🙄

The animals they used were so unecessairy, the bees you barelly see, the spider is very dangerous, they drugged an alligator who was barely visible and used an elephant for veet legs photoshoot where you could barely see the legs since they needed to show the elephant...and lets not talk about putting models in weird dangerous photoshoots saying "this is what high fashion is, if you want to be a model you have to deal with it", in what world?
