This is super fascinating! I had not thought about small, damp rooms as being such a key ingredient for contract is TB. I'D never thought about it!

As you can see from the house diagram, it would cramped upstairs for sleeping through the night, and it would be generally hotter up there in the attic - then in the day the basement areas 'downstirs' wouldn't be as well ventilated as the main house either.

This is so sad! Of course, it was usual for the people at those times and had to deal with all that stuff, but it sounds very hard. I wonder if there were similar situations and treatments in other countries where servitude was a standard.
I guess even in these "modern" types, there must be some of those practices in big households, which is even sadder.
Great documentary! Thank you so much for all the interesting information!

We know that the UK was quite similar, but there weren't as many restrictions about 'free time' or going outside. It may be because France is so big and borders other countries that migrant workers could easily come across and then get into industries like domestic service (non skilled) so there was always more of a chance that there were going to be 'bad' workers, then the rules got stricter for everyone.

My grandmother was a servant into the 60-ies, and my mother was it in 50-ies in Sweden. They have to walk into the building they served through a smaller door. Often beside the Official bigger door.

Such a depressing Life to have. One would only be able to tolerate such a Life if one knew nothing else.

Reminds me of downtown abbey!!! And happened to be from wealthy family, I grew up having maids in our household. But my parents/grandparents used to give us kids chores from the age 6, and were suppose to call maids Madam used to treat them with respect. Thats must.Yeah we had a big servant house with all facilities. We are all human beings end of the day.

Very nicely put together. This is the kind of excellent resource that can be used in modern education. Or better still that students can find and use for themselves.

In Arab gulf countries, about 60-80% of homes have female house maids usually from India, Philippines or Indonesia and Africa to a lesser extent.

Why would we not want to be reminded of slavery? The fact we were slaved for centuries by raiding Muslim slave ships shouldn’t bother us as it was a long time ago and happened to our ancestors not to us. Also we British were the only nation in the world to voluntarily ban slavery even though it cost us dearly. We banned it in England in 1068 and in the Empire in about 1836 or thereabouts. We lost thousands of soldiers and sailor’s of the west African squadron and countless cash destroying the slave ports and markets of Africa even loosing some great allies such as Benin. Even forcing other European states to follow suit. There is so much for the British to be proud of in relation to slavery.

You must love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. You must love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus the anointed is Lord! Repent and be baptized and believe the Gospel.

hey, we don't have to do anything. your beliefs are your very own, and not ours. if you're worried for us getting thrown into Hell in the afterlife, maybe stop preaching so much and actually take action to SHOW others the love of Christ. I made the mistake you are doing right now. if someone asks you about Jesus, then you should tell them in a loving way. but we didn't ask to be assaulted with a stranger's beliefs. thank you! have a nice day

      @@june6614 You're a good person.
It cannot be easy living in religious theocracies.
I have repeatedly seen the judgment and outright harassment.
      Religion stops humanity from evolving.
In my country it's a lot 'quieter' but that's because the state religion is ruled by whoever is the current reigning monarch.
There used to be a saying that the aristocracy would have 4 sons..
One to inherit the title, one for the armed forces, one for the church and one for politics.
You still see a lot of this, they are in the highest positions everywhere like cockroaches.
They and these institutions are basically all parasites living off our taxes.
They've had everything tied down for centuries hence them being able to *seem* like a modern free society.
We need to be a epublic, take back power for the people & hold our elected officials accountable.
      Vive la revolution.
