I know Ashley, you will most likely not see this. My dad passed with dementia in 2019, he asked me to remember him and told me it was going to be okay and patted my hand the day before he passed when he saw me crying. You have no idea how much this song has meant to me but I thank you for putting into song my heart and soul and letting me know that I'm not alone. And the for embarassing bawling of a 30 year old guy that nobody sees, Thank you.

I lost my dad to dementia in 2019 as well. Going to see Ashley in a few months, it'll be quite an experience if she plays this. The film they made (I'll Be Me) was incredibly moving to watch and one that so many of us could relate to.

My wife Peggy was going through hospice because of cancer in a Rehab hospital about 4.5 years ago.
I was playing Maggie May for her on my phone and started crying. She patted my hand and was more worried about me than her dying from esophageal cancer. She passed about 4 days later. As she took her last breath I told her, it's ok to leave, I'll see you again, I promise. Amazing what life throws at you.

@@jamesedwards2237 my condolances brother. The people who havent experienced what we have will never know how precious life is. It has mellowed me a lot. I went to the graveside last night and shared some memories with our family. The pain was still there but is gradually being replaced by peace with it and focusing on appreciating the time I actually had rather than wishing for more.

Ashley, first of all the song is excellent. Well done!! Thank you! Secondly, I believe your Dad has done something far greater than Elvis or Beatles, because he came to Jesus when he met your mommy, and he showed the world how Jesus changed his life and brought him salvation and peace. His example has touched so many, not just with a great career and killer songs, but he preached the gospel with his life, and that is truley eternal. It has effected me personally, and he will continue to be used by God to show that no matter how fameous or wealthy or loved you are, God is greater, and His treasures far more than this world can offer. I love him, and you, and your whole family, and share yiur grief at this time. God bless you honey.

I watched her sing this song to old time bands, the Gatlin Brothers, etc., she had them in tears, Glen had a lot of friends in music, he was a legend but a good guy too, the disease did a lot to him and changed him, in life he never acted like that, he was a gentle man.Ashley did a great job on this song, she can sing like a bird, she did herself and her daddy proud, with this very touching song, I loved it.

I like your acoustic version that you did. This song really reminds me of my own dad, when he had already be diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer. He asked me if I could go for a walk with him, so I went. We went around the block and he stopped, he told me that he didn’t think he could make it back home and I was worried. I looked around to see if there was a home that I could go to and ask to call an ambulance. He told me that he could make it. We went home and that was the last time that I ever walked with my dad. He passed away on September 30, 2009, I lost my best friend. This song helps me remember him, he was the best dad ever.

As much as I love art that can make me cry, very few things have ever made me. I've bawled my eyes out to this song several times. I truly believe that "We can talk until you can't even remember my name" is one of the most emotionally devastating and crushing lyrics I've heard in any song, any genre. So far haven't been able to hear this song without getting at LEAST 2-5 tears out of me.

I can’t stop crying and remembering. I just came here after watching you in an interview on the Circle, Southern Weekend show, talking about your father, etc. beautiful story and tribute. I came here when I found out you wrote this song, because you see, my father died 4 years ago and I’m still haunted by the thief that stole his memories! Dementia is a thief! I cared for my father 24/7 after mama died suddenly. I noticed he was already in the stages of dementia, his sister had had Alzheimer’s, my papa was diagnosed vascular dementia. It’s all sad. Anyways I cared for him 8 months exactly to the day mama went. It was so hard witnessing the rapid changes in my father. I think he just gave up the will to live after mama went no matter what. We had some good talks for a few months but then a month before he passed he pretty much stopped talking. I was doing everything for papa at this stage. This song just brought back all those memories. I was always a daddy’s girl so it killed me to see this big strong man being stripped away of everything! I missed our talks. I missed everything about him. The end came quick because I knew something else was wrong. I kept insisting the drs check him for cancer and they’d just tell me he’s fine, he’s just grieving, that’s why he’s losing 40 lbs in 3 months! Arghhh. I finally had him admitted to the hospital through ER and they discovered stage 4 cancer in 4 places!! When he heard that it seems he checked out completely. He was gone in 4 days. I made sure I brought him home right away on hospice so he could be in his own home and not a sterile environment of bad memories of where mama died.
Beautiful song Ashley! My father and I always loved your father. I got my love of traditional country music from my papa. He and mama were born in Alabama. Then dad joined the military. 4 years Navy then 23 Air Force. I miss him everyday. Don’t worry daddy, I’ll do all the remembering! God bless you Ashley . ❤❤❤

Four years old running up the stairs to your bed
Thunder rolls and I pull the covers over my head
You say it's just a storm, enjoy the show
You take me to the window, show me that it's beautiful
Never had to ask you to sing for me, it's just the way to put me at ease
Bone for bone we are the same
Bones get tired and they can't carry all the weight
We can talk until you can't even remember my name
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering
First guitar and I just wasn't getting it right
You showed me how to play it, said it doesn't happen overnight
In a couple years I come home and show you how I play "Blackbird"
Though I miss a couple notes you still say it was the best you ever heard
Never had to ask you to smile for me, it's just the way you put me at ease
Bone for bone we are the same
Bones get tired and they can't carry all the weight
We can talk until you can't even remember my name
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering
Now I have to ask you to sing for me
And I have to show you the worlds to see
You're standing right in front of me and slipping away
Dad, I'd ask you to smile for me, it's just the way you put me at ease
Bone for bone we are the same
Bones get tired and they can't carry all the weight
We can talk until you can't even remember my name

Ashley’s voice and simple acoustic is all this tune needs and is heartbreaking. This Radio mix looses a lot.

Our family is impacted by younger onset dementia. Our youngest daughter is 10 years old, and she's never known her Daddy without this disease. This song is the only one we've heard from anyone that really conveys what our four daughters would like to say. Seems they are all about the elderly and time marching on, but not many talk about what it's like to watch your Daddy just fade away while you are still young. My youngest has listened to this song every day since she first heard it. She is a grand champion fund raiser for the Alzheimer's Association and has been since she was much younger. She doesn't want others to lose their Daddies. I hope Miss Campbell uses her pain for something good like our little one does. We need a cure. We intend to keep working until the next generation never sees dementia. If Miss Campbell ever reads this, we wanted to thank her for bringing about dementia awareness. We need to talk about it, sing about it, and even dance sometimes (my youngest has a fabulous ballet routine she has developed to this song). Anything to let people know about the tsunami of dementia patients we will soon see. 1 in 3 seniors currently die with some type of dementia. We encourage everyone to DO something.

God bless ya girl. May we all be as blessed as your Daddy having someone remember us this way.
PS - like the version on Country Road TV better - less commercial and more heartfelt.

I don't like country, but over the last couple years I've come to realize that even though I consider myself somewhat distant from my family (I view holiday get-togethers and reunions as "chores"), one of my biggest fears is my mom getting Alzheimer's, so after hearing "I'm Not Gonna Miss You", I had to give this song a go. This song cut deep.

My father has been slipping away for over 20 years now, and I do the remembering everyday, even when he doesn't remember my name. That sums up what living with an Alzheimer's patient is like My dad & I used to sing together.... to all your dad's songs, nice memories. Love your song, your words exactly describe what happens. Your voice, music & soul are beautiful... don't stop singing! Thank you.
