Band during this time: David Sylvian David Torn - guitar (ie. guy tapping) Robby Aceto - guitar (you see him at 25 seconds into the video) Mark Isham - Trumpet Richard Barbiari - keys Ian Maidman - fretless bass Steve Jansen - drums
Holy poop, I've never seen this. I'm a life long Sylvian fan. My mom got me the UK vinyl of Gone To Earth for Christmas 1986. That album changed me as a person and musician. Thanks so much for posting this. It's just wonderful. Even the 2 feedback spots (ha ha).
@Steve Colby Did you know there are 3 other Sylvian Live 'pearls' here on TH-cam taken from the same Italian TV broadcast and one of them is the wonderful "Orpheus"? I know it also because I'm Italian and saw the full show at the times.. @@elenam.7439 Lucky you ! I would have loved to have been there. David was a big part of my growing up. I dressed and looked like him, which was fantastic as he is / was so suave and charming.x
@@stevelane5970 I totally agree with you; I’ve always been in love with his music and I still am. Some of his songs like this or "Orpheus" sound like heaven. Also he's such a charismatic guy, so classy.. I had a huge crush on him ;)
That's Richard Barbieri on keyboards and Steve Jansen on Drums: as close as you will get to Japan reforming. Pity it's on Italian TV. I wish Sylvian would do Jools Holland.
the bass payer is the guy who played with paul young on no parlez ,,his hairs shorter but definally him,,,,paul pallinnio ,,,but think i got the spelling wrong
can anyone help me, what would you clarify this style of music as, Im a huge sylvian fan but trying to describe him is impossible, and his differnet styles, would this fall under free jazz? its too heavy for ambient,
I've always thought about this, the thing is just can't categorize Sylvian in any particular genre i think. He is a singer-songwriter/composer who delves into so many different genres and subgenres. But the styles and genres that are most prominent are Jazz, Ambient, Post Prog, Jazzfusion, ArtPop and Avant-garde. Taking The Veil in particular is kind of a meld between Post-Prog, Ambient and Art Pop i'd say. According to Wikipedia, it's Art Rock, which i think is the best possible answer for this particular track.
I know what you mean. I love what played on the actual record, Secrets Of The Beehive (especially Boy With The Gun) but I found all his soloing on this tour just irritating and loud. It didn't compliment the mood at all. He's a brilliant guitarist though. The work with Mick Karn is great.
In which Japan or Sylvian's album can I find this same kind of musical atmosphere? I just met this guy and really liked it. Don't know where to start with.
Not Sylvian/Japan, but similiar athmosphere in my opinion: Robby Aceto - Code Mark Isham - Castalia David Torn - Door X Birds through fire - Letters to Thurza Various - Marco Polo Vol. 1 Trey Gunn - One thousand years etc.
With all respect to everybody to end the confusion about who's playing bass on this wonderful track, it is the amazing and very young Pino Palladino. Peace.
God I just love Steve Jansen's drumming.
Band mate from (Japan)
David's brother on drums and Steve Barbieri on keys and all they needed was mick karn. JAPAN!. SORRY rain tree ctow.
Thanks for making me go & fish out 'Gone to Earth'. 🙏
Every musical track Sylvian and fellow musicians laid down was an instant classic. Meticulously put down rhythm and melody, just gorgeous!
The bass is to die for....Ian maidman I believe.

Fantastic. Thank you!
Amazing footage, thanks for posting, good one.I saw this tour in LA in 88',and it's David Torn on lead guitar.
"... Ed era un fantastico David Sylvian, qui dal vivo, a DOC!"....
What a lineup. This is a Fantasy Football League band.
Love it!!!!!!
My favorite one from Gone to Earth
デヴィッドシルビアン…
何でこんなにあなたの曲は癒されるのだろう…
ほんまやな!僕もそうだわ!
@colinraycyrus68 No the bass player is Ian Maidman bassist & percussionist member of the Penguin Cafè Orchestra
the bassplayer is Jennifer Maidman used to go by the name Ian Maidman.
R.I.P Mick Karn
Pure metaphysics...
Wow! Mark Isham on the trumpet, David Torn on Guitar, Steve Jansen drums, I don't recognize the others
I thought that was Isham... Fripp as well, Superb.
No Fripp here. Thats David Torn on guitar.
That's Richard Barbieri on keyboards and Steve Jansen on Drums: as close as you will get to Japan reforming. Pity it's on Italian TV. I wish Sylvian would do Jools Holland.
Steve Jansen is the diferencie........The voice is nice. Sylvian is the lord.
That is definitely Pino Palladino on bass. I’d know his style anywhere. He played for Gary Numan on a couple of albums.
I'm pretty sure that's Ian Maidman.
It's Ian (Jennifer) Maidman. Maidman is the bassist on "Gone To Earth" from which the track is taken from :)
the bass payer is the guy who played with paul young on no parlez ,,his hairs shorter but definally him,,,,paul pallinnio ,,,but think i got the spelling wrong
Quality counts
you see prominently the great roland d 50 synthesizer? :)
Where's Fripp? The trumpet sounds good. It has that Jon Hassel sound. Gone to Earth is probably the last just released vinyl I bought.
David Torn guitar-Robbie Aceto guitar & keys-Steve Jansen drums-Richard Barbieri keys-Mark Isham trumpet-Ian Maidman-bass
can anyone help me, what would you clarify this style of music as, Im a huge sylvian fan but trying to describe him is impossible, and his differnet styles, would this fall under free jazz? its too heavy for ambient,
Post Rock I’d say. Waaay before Radiohead!

JBK must be the closest CLEAN cut JAPAN-wise :o)
Robbie Aceto on rhythm guitar, Pino Palladino on bass and (I think) Steve Wilson on guitar as well.
lol
Think so.
@edgroove7 I concur. There was no trumpet on the studio version. Or was there?
Suuuuuch a pity Karn wasnt the fretless player on this track. Everyone else was there, could almost have been Japan 2.0 :-)
isnt that Mark Isham on trumpet?
Yes there were.....Mark Isham.
Anyone know when this took place?
Probably 1986 or 87, around the time the album Gone To Earth came out (1986) which the current song takes place on. Best I can do for you. :)
Yes, this is from the Italian Tv live music show "Doc", 1986-1987
Where was this preformed?
Thought the guy tapping was Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater
I wish David Torn didn't get on my nerves but he does.
I know what you mean. I love what played on the actual record, Secrets Of The Beehive (especially Boy With The Gun) but I found all his soloing on this tour just irritating and loud. It didn't compliment the mood at all. He's a brilliant guitarist though. The work with Mick Karn is great.
Taking The Purple Vain more like...................
Whilst playing a Steinberger! Groan..
In which Japan or Sylvian's album can I find this same kind of musical atmosphere? I just met this guy and really liked it. Don't know where to start with.
+Oscar Luna Sylvian's solo Dead Bees on The Cake, Secrets of the Beehive, Gone To Earth.
Amazing artist.
Great, thanks. I also listened to mick Karn and I liked it better o: The album Tittles specially
Awesome, thanks a lot
Not Sylvian/Japan, but similiar athmosphere in my opinion:
Robby Aceto - Code
Mark Isham - Castalia
David Torn - Door X
Birds through fire - Letters to Thurza
Various - Marco Polo Vol. 1
Trey Gunn - One thousand years
etc.
Thats 'Titles'. Karn's first solo album.
That is not Karn on bass but a bad ass still. Who is that on the bass?
The Bass player is a mr Ian Maidman....superb :-)
Where is he? My god he is a stellar fretless bass man.
Wilson never played with DS
With all respect to everybody to end the confusion about who's playing bass on this wonderful track, it is the amazing and very young Pino Palladino. Peace.
Ian Maidman on bass.
Umm....the bassist looks and SOUNDS like THE GREAT Pino Palladino.
I thought exactly the same thing.
Anglovox not though..
Torn totally cheated on the Fripp part there in the middle
didn't know there was a "fripp part", tbc
that is not Mick on bass, but dude is bad ass.
OK, Misunderstood :-)
I dont know, theres too much goin on. It sounds cluttered. Like the album recording better
