  • This video was made in memory of my beloved teacher, Virgil Fox, who passed away 40 years ago on Oct 25, 1980. My student Sam Nelson and I originally planned to play a memorial recital at Sam’s church (the Church of the Redeemer Episcopal, in Sarasota, Florida) on the anniversary of Virgil's passing. Sadly, COVID interrupted those plans and the recital became a virtual event. The full virtual concert can be viewed here: • Virgil Fox Memorial Co...
Sam recorded the pieces which he prepared on the church's Nichols & Simpson pipe organ. The pieces which I prepared were recorded at the Marshall & Ogletree showroom in Needham, MA, where our first instrument, originally built for Trinity Wall Street in New York, is currently set up. This organ has prior history honoring Virgil, as my business partner David Ogletree played a Virgil Fox memorial recital on it at Trinity in 2005. That concert was part of a city-wide 25th anniversary celebration of Virgil's passing, featuring important organ venues all around Manhattan.
I can't thank Dr. Fox enough for sharing with me from his incredible treasure trove of insights and techniques during the decade I was blessed to study with him. For my portion of this 40th anniversary program, I recorded six pieces which are emblematic of Virgil's unique approach. I simply pray that this effort honors his memory and his artistry and will inspire others to pursue the thrilling challenge of playing the King of Instruments creatively and colorfully.
    Doug Marshall

Cannot thank Doug Marshall enough for his honoring of his teacher Virgil Fox by continuing to play influenced by his style! "Now Thank We All Our God" is one of my best loved hymns and hearing Doug play Fox's arrangement gives me great respect for all who study and play the organ. "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the Glory of God and the refreshment of the soul". Johann Sebastian Bach

I'm so glad we have someone like you to continue Virgil Fox's style of playing. It is also great to read that you have a student being brought along in the same way.

One of my favorite arrangements of this great old hymn, played by one of my favorite artists. You have surely continued the legacy of Virgil Fox with true fidelity, Mr. Marshall. Happy Thanksgiving!

Lovely rendition, and at the dignified tempo that Mr. Fox intended. So often people make it sound like something from a carnival.

This organ is now permanently installed at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookline, MA. We can build you one though! :)

This is a nice rendition, but the hymn was composed by Mendelssohn not Bach. In the St Thomas Church in Leipzig there are plaques to both Bach and Mendelssohn, both Leipzig residents.

Actually, the hymn tune predates both Bach and Mendelssohn, being written in 1636. Mendelssohn did write a well known harmonization of the hymn in the 1800's. However, the inspiration for this organ arrangement is definitely Bach, emulating his Cantata no. 79, written in 1725: th-cam.com/video/l4kadpznOhc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RKN1zH3FwNewIuol&t=512.

@@organpower You are right. I was going to delete my comment, when I found out more. It is sometimes attributed to Bach and Mendelssohn, I guess.
