      About 40 minutes by plane.
Rio is in the sea level, São Paulo is 760m high and there are many mountains... So, I would say that it's far from a straight line :)

One of the most important soccer clubs in Brazil is from São Paulo: Palmeiras, former called Palestra Italia. It was one of many Italian clubs that were founded at the beginning of the century, but it was the one that grew more. That's because it wanted to be a club of all Italian descendents (the unification of Italy was too recent to create a sense of community here). I like to think that it was a second unification of Italy that happened in São Paulo, Brazil. Within the years, Palestra Italia became Palmeiras and the sense of bringing everyone together expanded. Today it's not the team with the most number of supporters (maybe the 4th), but they are spread along all social classes, origins and states of Brazil.

3:08 First Brazil as you know was a colony of Portugal. But due to the war against France, the Portuguese royal family fled to Rio de Janeiro and Brazil became the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves (and Rio de Janeiro became the only "European" Capital outside Europe hahahaha). Them when the war was over, the king returned to Portugal and let his son in Brazil. But the people here didn't wanted to return to the colony status, it was a matter of time to Brazil become independent. The king of Portugal knowing this, advised his son for himself make this. And here we have the Brazil Empire, which is Brazil + Uruguay (a little before the independence, French Guyana was annexed too, the beginningof brazil its full of wars, and never lost any of them, argentina Uruguayand Paraguay only wasnt annexed because of the England influence). In some point of the history Brazil had the potential to be a Usa of the south hemisphere, but at the half way they decided to became a pacific country. The maps with mercator projection don't make us understand that this was the 11th biggest Empire in the history, bigger than the ottoman empire, the Roman empire, Macedonian empire...

São Paulo used to speak more italian than portuguese, but as the nacionalism grew in the 30s, the dictator Getúlio Vargas prohibitated languages from abroad to be spoken in Brazil, in the 1932 revolution São Paulo fought the Getúlio's dictatorship in search of democracy, but then Getúlio turned the whole country agaist São Paulo with the propaganda that the italians in São Paulo were fighting against the federation for independence. Today less than 1/3 of the tax incomings in São Paulo stay in São Paulo, the rest goes to the federation to do social programs to other States...
São Paulo is like Cataluna but with higher taxes.

It's almost like everybody have an Italian surname. In fact, I can remember of only two people I met that didn't have Italian surname.

Fun fact: the banks of Pinheiros River are actually ugly and stinky, as you saw on the video. But they are also, with all the very ugly buildings around, a "postcard" of the city, according to the poor taste of the economic elites. Those buildings are in fact the financial center of the town.

Since you had the curiosity about the emperor, let me try to help in very simple way. We had few different forms of government here since the portuguese came in here in 1500 and estalished the colonization process in 1530, ending in 1822. But in 1807, Napoleon invaded Portugal and the king and his court fled to Brazil, arriving in Rio in january 1808. With the Portuguese crown there, Rio de Janeiro became the capitol of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves, and the ports of the colony were opened to friendly nations, e.g England. But after some events and years, the king of Portugal at that time, D. João, returned to Portugal and the capitol came back to Lisbon, but he left his son, D. Pedro the First (in Brazil; he is known as D. Pedro the Fourth, in Portugal). D. Pedro stayed in Brazil, proclaimed the independence of Brazil from Portugal in 1822 and we started in the imperial era, which took place from 1822 to 1889 (one year after the abolition of slavory here), when the republic was proclaimed and since then, after dictatorships, normality periods and now a neofascist wave, here we (brazilians) are, still in a republic.
This is why we have (two) emperors in our history.

E o pior é que quem está por de traz disso são as ONGs(Organizações não Governamentais) que vem aqui com o pretexto de defender os índios.

Frank now imagine that São Paulo is like the big brother when compared to other cities in Brazil. Did u know that around 90% of all we product (money from our BIGGEST taxes in the world) is not used here? We live with only 10% of our money and the other 90% the capital takes and divide around the country. We could live really better if the division was ok.

São Paulo was a tiny little city when the world already had a real notion of how to built a planed and functional city...its "elite" choose to destroy the rivers (Tietê and Pinheiros), put the workers in outskirts far far away and to be very lazy to built public transportation like metro... I remember the region of the city when I lived there, Zona Leste, 30% of the population and 5% of the jobs, 3 millions of people and zero cinemas... but despiste all of this it has some charm...

Frank, it's a long but very important explanation, without political or ideological bias:
Lula was convicted of corruption in 3 scandals involving payment of bribes by favoring bidding contracts with construction companies in exchange for bribes to finance the political party (PT) and some personal pleasures such as rural property, reforms, a triplex on the edge of beach, money in the account of law firms, schemes in which his wife was used to hide illicit assets, etc ...
The current president Bolsonaro was elected with anti-corruption speech, but when come up that his son was involved in corruption, Bolsonaro allied himself with the worst politicians in Brasilia to save the family and their criminal businesses that surfaced after his election.
In Brazil we have an aberration called the privileged forum, the privileged forum guarantees immunity to politicians and state authorities so that federal judges are not allowed to judge them for crimes and they can't be investigated by the prosecutors, only the supreme court of justice can do it.
Part of the supreme court ministers are involved in "non-republican" things, the Senate is the only body that has the authority to investigate and dismiss ministers from the supreme court, the problem is that most senators are involved in corruption scandals, guess who should judge the senators? The supreme court.
Bolsonaro knows that he cannot lose his privileged forum (immunity) because he goes to jail. He needs re-election to remain free and at the same time he buys support in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies with public money, this has been used to destroy the control departments and change laws to prevent him from being investigated and tried when he leaves of the presidency, it takes time and for that reason he needs re-election.
All election polls indicate that Bolsonaro would lose to any candidate in the 2nd round of the presidential election, he may not even get to the 2nd round because of the economic disaster and his poor management in the pandemic that looks more like a premeditated genocide.
Bolsonaro's plan is to polarize with Lula, he believes that this way he will increase his chances of reaching the 2nd round because many would vote for him to prevent Lula's return. On the other side Lula and the corrupt people around him want Bolsonaro in the 2nd round because they believe that only Bolsonaro is a candidate with enough rejection to pave the way for Lula to win in the 2nd round.
As you may know, education in Brazil is not the best, about a third of the people (especially the most mizerable) actually believe in Lula's innocence, at the same time approximately a third of the emerging middle class defends Bolsonaro, not because they believe him but because they believe they can take advantage of the ideological politics it represents.
In the past few months Bolsonaro has corrupted much of the system to soften anti-corruption laws, while corrupt politicians supporting Lula have pressured the supreme court. In a legal maneuver, the supreme court changed a case law that rendered the court of justice that condemned Lula as incompetent to judge the president of the republic. There was a political discussion about hacked messages that would demonstrate partiality from the federal judge responsible for the case, but with the decision that made the court incompetent, this issue "lost the object of the action" as it is legally said in Brazil.
Lula was released and the entire investigation was lost. Lula was not exonerated, the action was annulled by a legal maneuver because of the interest of part of the supreme court judges, senators, part of the chamber of deputies, the political party PT and mainly, Lula is Bolsonaro's greatest wish for 2022.
    But what about the press?
In Brazil we have a press system that works under a public concession regime. Large press conglomerates gain the right to explore means of transmitting information through the state concession. Brazil has many state-owned companies that are unfortunately used to employ relatives of politicians and launder money. The government uses these companies to distribute public money to owners of large media through advertising. Some vehicles have more than 3/4 of the revenue from state advertising. Guess which vehicles receive this money? Those who do not receive are those who received in the past and want to receive again, that is, each press vehicle has its favorite candidate. In a country where most of the people are ignorant and education is rubbish, it is not difficult to elect a president.
    And the foreign press?
If the majority of Brazilians do not understand what is happening here, do you really think that the foreign press can understand it? They are like parrots, just repeat what the Brazilian public press says.
In addition to the facts, my personal opinion:
If we do not have a strong name for the elections next year, regardless of these two worms, we will be screwed. What is the chance of this happening? Virtually none.
