My first computer was a Sony MSX 1984. It was very nice but it was quite difficult to buy games for it in U.K. shops. My mother liked Sony stuff. It was replaced in 1987 with an Atari ST
The Toshiba Hx10 for Christmas 1984 cost £279.99 on release but was reduced to £239.99 to sell more. It was bundled with Manic Miner, Hunchback and French is Fun. My friend Paul’s parents bought one in the January sale for £200. They put it away to keep for a Christmas present for him. Christmas 1985 the price was reduced to £99.99 and bundled with a tape deck and a couple of games as you showed.

Christopher Rutherford yes I got the £99 bundle from Laskys. Loved it! Yes games were very difficult to get hold of. Cheap tapes were WHS and sometimes a few newsagents. Evesham Micros stocked some but the proper Konami cartridges were available from mail order or a very few shops that were normally nowhere near where I lived!

Nowhere near where I live but On a trip taking sister to College I visited a shop in Birmingham Bullocks HiFi. They had every MSX game and bits of hardware a real Aladdin’s cave. I bought Nemesis on that trip which was fantastic at the time. The first Konami game I had Antarctic Adventure had to be purchased direct from Konami mail order. Thinking back the tape games I played most would be Shark Hunter, Jet Set Willy, Blagger, Boulderdash, Special Operations, Chuckie Egg and Ghostbusters

Christopher Rutherford we must’ve passed each other! Bullocks in Stechford, Birmingham was my nearest stockist and where we bought Nemesis, Nemesis 2 and Hyper Rally from! Small world eh?

Love the Retro Shed set up, reminds me of an 80,s style kids tv show like the Broom Cupboard with Philip Schofield, so bright and colourful. Keep up the good work guys.

@@TheRetroShed Yes - I have the Panasonic MSX2 F1 whatever. Imported it from Japan. I don't even want to know what some of that grime was.....

A very informative and entertaining video (as always) I have recently added a Toshiba HX22 MSX to my collection and I am really enjoying it. I was brought up on the Spectrum and noticed the paranoia that was rampant in the Speccy press at the time, my beloved Crash in particular having a couple of scathing editorials about the MSX at the time which huffed and puffed about the "Japanese Invaders".
Even then it was obvious to me that it was just another computer format that happened to be made by several companies rather than just one. We were no more "under attack" from Japanese MSX's than we were from American Atari's and Commodore's really, maybe it was back when people were being persuaded to "Buy British" (Whatever that really means!)
Looked at nowadays the MSX seems almost like two systems in one- Spectrum like in Europe and NES like in Japan. Altogether that amounts to a rather interesting system in my view and one that is very interesting to get into.

HX-22! Nice, never even seen one in the flesh. Yes, there were only 2 kids in my school with an MSX in 1985 and I was one of them. To be fair, most of my friends who saw it thought it was a superior machine - but they were looking at the Japanese Konami cartridges and these truly showed off how good the MSX was. It played more like a games console than a computer and the Japanese market really adopted the format to its best. The tape releases here in the UK were mostly cheap inferior ports on the whole and were no where near as good as the carts. A truly brilliant machine!

Enjoyed this, have absolutely no history with the msx.
Looks like an interesting machine, I love the cart port.
I started with the spectrum as a kid, still love playing on it.
You never forget your 1st 😁

I know the square root of eff all about the msx, and only have limited experience through emulation a couple of years back, have to say the bubble bobble port is amazing and I can't remember the other couple of games I tried.
Wonderful machines definitely one for the list. Great vid

Bazza H hope you found it kinda informative or at least an enjoyable watch matey! Yes I can thoroughly recommend you get one for your collection. HX10 is plentiful in the UK at a decent price.

The fall guy , I used to love that show! I'd like an MSX for the cartridge games which look great but most of the cassette games I've seen, look like pretty poor versions of the Spectrum. Great video, thanks.

    • @TheRetroShed
      @TheRetroShed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Ged The Gardener Garden Maintenance yes unfortunately most of the cassette games are pretty poor with some exceptions. Cartridges were the best!
