  • The team returns to Faial Island, Azores for their second trip of this season. The next 7 days are filled with the best blue marlin fishing the team, and maybe the world has ever seen. With the team losing their largest marlin to date. A fish they estimate is 1200+ pounds. The trip will go down as what everyone describes as a "historical blue marlin bite." Similar to that of Madiera, Portugals historical bite in the 90's. Along with the team is Alex Fanjul, a friend the team met 14 months prior at the start of the tour in Madeira.
With slick grease conditions the team runs into an unexpected species. An Atlantic surface swordfish. Unprepared for the sighting they scramble to present a bait to the fish.
Tune in for the bite of a lifetime and relive the best 7 days of the world tour yet.

Look how fat a broadbill swordfish's base of the tail is!!!!! It's girth at the tail base is way bigger proportionately than a marlins!! That big huge eye!!! Just look prehistoric!!! Awesome billfish species!!!

In the beginning on the first fish (marlin) , I noticed the guy pulling leader was mostly trying to come up from under the leader between his thumb and fore finger, then double wrap (2) wraps. I was taught by some of the best captains and leader men in kona. The best guys, pretty much all said always wrap coming from underneath this way!!!! Every world famous guy in kona said always wrap from under this way!! Never start hitting the outside edge of your hand off the side by your pinky finger come up and under with the leader hitting the notch between your thumb and index finger!! Basically start with your palms facing you, not towards the fish double wrap never 3 wraps on one hand! Rule of thumb (lol) is a single wrap will slip, a double wrap will hold and at triple wrap will bind! Always have the wraps going away from you towards the fish!! If the second wrap goes over the first one behind it towards you not the fish, it won't slide off your hand snd you could get yanked over and into the ocean and get pulled down underwater and dragged behind a big marlin!! To dump the leader you just hold your fingers together and point both hands towards the fish!! Then the leader cam uncoil while sliding off your hands. If you wrap the other way (palms away from you) at the fish, the leader can get hung up on your arm and you could lose a finger or get injured or worse, get pulled over!!!!! I have 45 years of experience fishing in Hawaii on the big island and kona. I agree with the palms towards you method absolutely!!! Also with 300 lb test mono it will break if you hold it on a big ahi or marlin trying to run away or sound!!! It snaps right in your hand! But 400 lb test mono is not going to break but likely pull you over!!! I've never broke 400 but guys like to use 500 or 600 and special mono leader that will resist getting chafed by the marlins bill which is actually covered by little tiny teeth!!! A big donkey can saw right through the leader and break it off on the strike and initial first run!! The longer you have a big marlin on, fighting it, the more it's bill will saw at the leader weakening it. That's why guys look very carefully at how a marlins hooked, and how the leader looks!? If the leader is really frayed from rubbing on the bill, then the wireman has to gently bring the fish up! If it looks like it's hooked well and the leader is in good shape, then I will wrap and pull hard but be smooth and if the fish starts shaking it's head you use your body and arms like shock absorbers and walk around the back deck following the fish as it moves swimming! It is absolutely a very fine art to read and feel fish as you leader and wrap and pull on it till it's right at the boat. I've had pretty much most every crazy thing happen including marlin jump into the boat and beat the heck out of the cockpit while leadering and I've been pulled over board and 30- 40 feet under water by a big ahi on av13vfoot whaler where you don't have the gunnel height to brace your knees and if the gaff man doesn't pull the ahi's head out if the water and hold it above the water, but let's it's nose go under the surface, both the leaderman and the gaff guy go over together into the water!!! Ie, at gaff, always gaff a big ahi in the head and hold it's head up, never letting it go under orit will take off and sound!! Kona has all kinds of wild and crazy things that have happened to guys pulling leader on big fish!! I can't tell you how many guys I see pulling and wrapping leader the wrong way!!!! Just something the very best guys in Hawaii and kona agree on when wrapping leader on big fish!!!
I've been blessed to have been taught by some of the best and to have had so many years of fishing experience to know what is the proper way to wrap leader.
It's really important!! Great and epic day of fishing guys!!!
    Aloha
