Yes, surely works great! Even when the vocal is very level and the 1176 is not need to reduce the non-existent peaks... the 1176 can add a beautiful coloration when driven without any compression at all!
Great video. Nailed it. I personally will only compress more than 1-2dB if the dynamics of the performance are out of control. And then it irritates me no end. For a studio situation, I prefer to manually adjust the peaks and valleys to be closer together. After that I do lighter compression. I’m much happier with my results this way. Great video.
@jthunderbass1 Thanks for the watch and comment! You’re right… there are many ways to tackle wide dynamic vocals. A nice even source recording is ideal. But that’s not the reality unfortunately. Clip gaining to get it more level is another. I personally don’t do this method often (although at times I do!) because it can take a lot of time and, honestly, the sound difference is negligible compared to serial compression in my opinion. But whatever works best for your workflow and sounds best to your ears is always the right answer!
Yep, you've got it! If a track is inside a folder, that parent folder is the ‘bus’. I did a video specifically on side chaining in Reaper… hopefully it’s useful for you! th-cam.com/video/iHBNUdn5lok/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zoeaaWy4Mmj2ot_U
Instead of using two compressors I actually might just go to the track and lower the gain on those few words that get to much compression. ”…wish we could stay..”-part sounds really bad. Next tutorial how to fix that?
@vl292 Manually razor editing the gain down is surely another way to address peaks such as these. Whatever works best for your workflow and sounds better! I like using two compressors because it takes care of the peaks as well as may provide some nice coloration as well. I love using this 1176 on the bluey setting for a boost in the brightness on a lot of vocals! Thanks for the comment and watch!
Use it all the time. Same combo! Match made in heaven!

Serial compression is a must, I use it on all my lead vocals. Great, easy to understand tutorial. Well done! ✅
Thanks so much! Yes, serial compression works wonders when called for!
Another great tip! Thanks man.
@jordanmattievisuals You bet! Glad you found it useful!!

If track inside in a folder it means that folders is bus for that track? Last i quit use reaper because routing and sidechain
