    Hi, love all your fig videos. Suggestions, would be great if you create a series of videos, summarizing what you have learned over the past 5 years. What to do in year one, year two, and afterwards.

    Thanks for this video I'm definitely going to try that this year I have four fig plants that never produce fruit. I've got one that always does we'll be doing that this year! Not certain of the varieties because I just got all the fig plants that I have from cuttings and I wasn't sure what the mother plant was.

    I know this video is now quite old but does pinching induce fruit bumps to form on well developed advanced branches where there were previously only single bumps above leaves? thanks!

    Good information TY sharing, my Black Madeira is from Tree of joy (bass) , is the black madeira kk , is there a different ?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Black Madeira (KK) is the strain of Black Madeira popularized by member KK at Ourfigs who sells a lot on eBay. I cannot tell you what the differences are, if any, between the different "Black Madeira's." Are they all slightly different? Are they all exactly the same? I don't know. Mine is the KK version. I've heard the KK version was propagated from a superior piece of wood that wasn't as infected with FMV as the original UCD version. I've always heard the original UCD version was stunted. I'm not sure where KK got his.

    What do mean 'you pinched it', do you mean you broke off a leaf?

    Do you grow bushes on purpose or do you plan to trim them to a tree form at some point?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fozzy Ozzy the first year I am allowing my plants to grow naturally into bushes to give me as many opportunities for fruits and cuttings as possible. Over the winter, I will be pruning them into trees with the intention of planting them in the ground with fairly tight spacing next spring. I will have to prune them regularly because I can’t allow them to get too large in my yard.

      What zone are you? I didn’t think figs did well outside of Zone 10 because they need a defined cool season to drop their leaves? Does a fig drop its leaves in a tropical zone?
      I would think in the tropics, pinching wouldn’t serve much of a purpose except for actively shaping the tree when it grows. Does a fig go dormant in the tropics?

      Lala Momo what’s your location? With that big of a temperature difference between winter and summer your location sounds more subtropical than tropical. Usually tropical locations stay within 10C or so all year for highs.

      Abdel Ibrahim I just went outside and counted 10 fully formed figs on my Raspberry Latte. There are a bunch of other double bumps showing as well. All in all that’s a solid showing for an6 month old Raspberry Latte notorious for not giving fruit the first season or two. I’m very pleased!

    So, seems to be that you need to test 10 trees each, one group pinched another not pinched. Otherwise, you cannot prove why the branches not pinched were doing better, as a result of pitching of no dominant branches as you claim or just going to be anyway.

    • @TheMillennialGardener

      Jeong Kim the experiment certainly could be expanded. I made a detailed video on pinching 2 weeks ago:
      th-cam.com/video/xjLeIr5Wo4Q/w-d-xo.html
      Long story short, I think pinching is geared more towards growers in cooler climates growing long season varieties in containers. My summers are very long and hot, so most figs will fruit and ripen easily for me in my area. I don’t have a reason to pinch many of my figs and disturb the natural growth pattern.
      Raspberry Latte was an exception. They are notorious for taking years to produce a decent crop. It was my only tree worth pinching to me. It is clear beyond all reasonable doubt, to me, that pinching does change the fruiting habit of the tree because this tree has been frustrating me all spring. All my other trees were doing great but this wouldn’t bud. Since pinching, there was an immediate change in how the plant behaved. It stopped growing and started budding all over. This became noticeable after around 5 days and every day you could see it bud more and more and put less effort into side growth. I check my trees every day, so it was really obvious to me.
      I don’t expect everyone to believe me, and that’s fine because I cannot truly prove it. But I’m a believer after witnessing this.

      @@TheMillennialGardener From other fig growers and pinching, it does seem to cause fruit production. Your leaves on your figs look healthy, good thing they were not in a greenhouse and show terrible leaf health.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter A thank you. I’m not a fan of greenhouse growth, either. It always looks pale yellow and scraggly. In the winter I place things in carts and drag them in and out as needed. I took my fig cuttings outside even in January for exposure to sun during 50+ degree temps so they didn’t require acclimation and handled the sun right away.

    Wait, you're contradicting yourself now? I dont need to pinch for fruit production down South, here in South Florida so maybe you need to clarify like Ross.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Newbie Garden I only pinched my Raspberry Latte because it was the one fig I own that clearly wasn’t going to fruit along my necessary timeline. This is simply a follow-up to my pinching of the Raspberry Latte from 12 days earlier.
      I do believe the evidence is clear that pinching will force early fruiting. However, in my opinion, if your growing season is long enough that your figs will ripen naturally along their own timeline, it is unnecessary. Pinching will still force early fruiting in many cases, and you can make your fruit earlier no matter your climate, but you’ll do it at the expense of your tree’s natural growth habit. That’s up to the grower to weigh your opinions.
      I’m not telling you to do it. Only that it is clear, to me, that it forces early fruiting. No contradictions, here.

    You are wasting your time pinching it. It is a young tree and there is nothing you can do to speed up the rate a tree matures at. A fig tree will not produce a crop for the first four to five years even if they do have one or 2 fruits in their 2nd or 3rd year ......
