@@thiscobhouse Hi there, So when one builds cob walls, or pour cob walls, one should not add cement to the cob to start with ??? A neighbor did that, cause he said it would be stronger.. Adobe or Cob walls should be plenty strong by them selves I would think...the neighbor does not have any type of plaster on the outside of the walls at all. I do not know what the inside looks like..his walls have been that way for 25 yrs now.. He said he did not use straw at all. I am wondering if that place is safe to live in, the way he did it.. Can the walls still breathe with a fair amount of cement mixed in..??? So he used, cement, volcanic rock, clay soil, fine rock as well. How can his walls breathe with cement in them ???. I never did construction in my days by the way. At least not to county code or by a trade on a job. From what the old man used,, do you think he did ok.??? I only told you what he told me.. I,m trying to get a feel if he knows what he is doing.. He has always been a jack of all trades of sort... I am wondering if he does know what he is doing.. Because he wants to help me build a mud cabin he said...I think he knows Alot, but I don't know how CORRECT his Adobe or Cob practices are.. I want to do as much natural building as I can do when building the cabin.. A new question,, Can I put cob inside a wall cavity in place of standard insulation. Or would that cause a problem. If I did, I would think it would have to dry for a good while before putting inside wall board on..I,m sorry, I probably talk to much..to many questions right....have a great cob day..

Very useful information. Hopefully more people find their way here and learn to build natural again! I have heard of a polished clay plaster finish which is water/humidity proof to a certain degree. I belive it was polished/finished with linseed oil. What would be your thougts about this?
Namaste!
Thanks for making this video, very helpful. 2 Questions: - Can you apply several coats of linseed oil to an earthen plaster to improve water resistance or can you run into the same issues as cement based renders? - Can you have a hybrid earth/lime based render?
It's challenging to find in Tennessee. Look for Type S lime at masonry supply stores. I know a store in Atlanta that sells it, and that's where I still go for my lime. You can always order it, but the shipping is a lot.
@@thiscobhouse I work on a horse farm and one of my "bosses " said I should build my own place, he'll supply water and electricity so it'll be rent free. I don't know how big a studio is ft wise, but I'm picturing a a round hut like with stone at the base then cob style, I don't know how I would do a roof. If I could somehow grow moss on top. I could maybe even use wood from the property.

I loved cob houses i was used to lived it i missed it alot
How would tadelakt be vapor permeable? Wouldn't it work like concrete as far as a cob finish and cause moisture to build up in the cob wall?
Very valuable information. Thank you.

thank you for your knowledge IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED
Thank you. This was very helpful to understand the finishing process. You explain very well.
Great quality content! Keep it up! Pretty sure this will explode 👌😊
What does a lime-based finish look like? What does a tadelakt finish look like? Can they be painted?
Tadelakt is gorgeous and you wouldn't want to paint it
This was Exactly the information I was looking for. Thank you! Subscribed.
Been looking for this for days! Thanks man!
Glad it helped!
Sweet way of presentation :)
Great tutorial.
Thank you for sharing
Tadelakt? I have never heard of it though it sounds interesting?
Hi IAM from morroco WE do tadelact the rely tadelact
Yes, Morroco is the birthplace of tadelakt. Great artisanship.
Thanks for sharing all this info. I have a question. What happens if you use agriculture lime instead?
Could you use regular wall plaster?
Love it!

@@thiscobhouse muito bom, obrigada pelas informações.
For hundreds of years cob houses with lime based plaster was traditional style for building houses in Ukraine.

Yes and yes. No problems.
Where do you get your lime from? I am in Tennessee and would love to do a bulk buy. Having a hard time finding it.
It's challenging to find in Tennessee. Look for Type S lime at masonry supply stores. I know a store in Atlanta that sells it, and that's where I still go for my lime. You can always order it, but the shipping is a lot.
Lime plaster doesn't hold well to a cob wall. Tadelakt is not vapor permeable.
Bravooooo
I live in ohio! How much would you think it would cost to build a small round yurt cob. For one person?
That depends on many variables. Technically, it could be done for... lets say $5,000. Or more depending on how high quality you want it.
