    Just a perfect glimpse into much better times. Harder work, yet more personal and rewarding. Dennis is a wealth of talent and knowledge. Rare

    I have seen the Dennis Woloch name so many times looking at the KISS albums. It's really great for him to get his due and definite appreciation. Thanks to him for sure. Extra thanks to Claudio for making this a thing.

    Jeff: When I tell my graphics students about how we used to spec type they are in absolute disbelief. This series has been so interesting, and both host and guest have been a pleasure to watch. Bravo, Dennis and Claudio.

    I really enjoyed this interview. I love Dennis' way of thinking on the concept for the design, especially the "One, Two, Three, Four" for the album sides. I enjoyed hearing about the old ways of doing design work too. I did things years ago on the typewriter along with the rub on letters, like you mentioned, and also used photos to create projects I worked on long before computers were in homes. It was much more time consuming then Photo Shop...

    So funny how this album is some of the earliest memories as a child...just marveling at "what is THIS!" kind of thing....my brother made me listen to this at like age 4-5 back in the late 70s....I mean I must have looked at this album 100s of times... Also I love hearing about Graphic Design from back then and watched my brother work in the old ways pre 90s internet.

    My favorite Kiss album cover overall. Simple and straight-forward design. I cut up and used the booklet to create shrines in the four corners of my bedroom, one for each member.

    I'm glad Dennis told the truth about the back cover picture cause I remember seeing a video before where Sean Delaney tried to say that he designed the KISS poster those fans had and that he made them hold it, plus he claimed it was at a Styx concert and not at a KISS show cause people weren't going to seeing them until after the success of Alive. I've always believed that Sean told a lot of tall tales about his days working for KISS.

    The hot type I actually used in the UK in the early 2989"s. The metal type face was put in reverse on a hot metal bed heated electrically. Then colour foil paper was placed over the typeface and a card put on top of that. Then you would close the lid and pull down a handle and that pressed the foil onto the card. The name of the machine was a Masseley machine.

    • @thefonzkiss
      @thefonzkiss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People do dorky stuff in photo shoots all the time. By the time you see it it’s too late.

    • @ata5855
      @ata5855 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's my guess: It's more interesting to see that side of the guitar than the back of it. Also, if the guitar was closer to his body in a normal playing position, the lines of the photo wouldn't work as well, and it would feel a little flat without Ace's left arm not going straight across.

    I wonder if Dennis had anything to do with the British 1976 promotion tour? I had a cardboard mask that had all 4 characters of Kiss on it merged together, similar to the back of the Hotter than hell album. It had the tour dates for the British tour on it plus the first three albums. It was in colour and given out at a Manchester supermarket to promote the Manchester gig at the Free trade hall. I've never seen one before or since.

    Fantastic photo by Fin Costello who by the way is Irish. The name Alive was copied by Kiss from the band Slade, who they also copied their stage dress sense also.

      This was the first episode we ever did and I didn't have any experience doing a podcast. I got better with each subsequent episode. Plus there's a delay that makes dialog difficult. You are late a few years with your critique.

    i went from ELVIS to KISS ........... simply walking past the ALIVE album cover while my parents went into the city from our rural farm house an hour away ...... and had to have it (never hearing one KISS song) ..... and i couldnt get enough after putting it on my parents giant grundig floor radio/turntable unit .... my parents hated it
