Not to the hoop. To the stanchion behind the hoop (the thing that the backboard and the hoop are attached to). Three point line is 23'9"; they did over 29". I suspect they're just about going far and high enough to be able to dunk for three points.
Four of Lewis's jump was over 8.80m : 3rd round : 8.83m 4th round : 8.91m (wind-aided) 5th round : 8.87m last round : 8.84m (wind-aided) Those jump would win any competition since then. The effort shown by these two great athletes to respond other big jumps were remarkable. I think current long jumpers will quit after seeing those big jumps. Lewis and Powell are exceptional.
@yogi bear you probably weren't born in America. Otherwise you wouldn't talk like that. Probably came over after you were taught different illegally at first like a bunch of other so called Americans
@@mindciller I was born in midwest america to 2 american citizens. I'm American as it gets baby. But the metric system makes way more damn sense. freeze at 0° and boil at 100° and not something dumb like 32°. Every measurement breaks down to be divisible of 100. So instead of 32nds you can just have milimeters there's 1,000 milimeters per meter. It makes sense and there's a reason why scientists use it, but you're probably gonna respond with "those scientists are lying about the flat earth and how vaxination gave my kids autism"
flat earth isn't even a thing. now I know you're dumb and can't read numbers in fractions either. You might as well give up. Being born in America doesn't qualify you for being smart automatically or that you deserve to live here with your anti American thinking. You can take my US foot which is now a defined decimal fraction of a metre and shove it
When they were waiting for the last measurement, Lewis tapped Powell on the shoulder and I think he said, "you got me". Great sportsmanship displayed here and unbelievable athleticism. Unreal.
Few people can go through life and hit a moment where they can legitimately and honestly say they gave it all. These two, they both gave it their all. Even though Lewis lost, it must feel amazing to produce such a pure effort. They both gave their best and left their mark.
For those asking about the measurements, Mike Powell's world record is 8.95m. Bob Beamon's famous leap at the 1968 Olympics was 8.90m. You can look up the rest😊
I remember watching this on tv and years later watching it now, still the most thrilling competition I've ever witnessed. Carl is the man with 3 jumps over 29 feet but Mike got him that night in Toyko and the world record.
Nothing to see here folks! Use your conversion factors. 1 meter = 3.28084 feet = 39.3700787401 inches. 1 foot = 12 inches = 0.3048 meters. 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters.
Who would of thought at 4 am on a Friday night, Saturday Morning, i would be watching Long jump history. Considering i don't even pay attention to long jumping at all.. Got to love the power of sports competitiveness as well as you tube recommended. Well done you 2.
I remember watching this. I couldn't believe it back when ttrack and field was on tv and it was exciting. Being a huge Lewis fan Powell really rose to the occasion. What a gteat day in sports history. One of my favorites was Butch Reynolds when he came ftom behind and broke the world record he was one of the greats.
Question: why don't we remove wind interference and why don't we calculate the difference between their starting point and their end point so that they essentially can't foul? Wouldn't that be a better test of who the best long jumper is? Or is the very act of "timing" your jump a big part of the skill we are testing?
DIVAD291 not sure you can “remove” wind interference, as much as just measure it, and set allowable limits. Or do you mean to conduct the jumping indoors? I think the rules are set in a way that human judges can moderate the event without the use of technology- just bright lines to know if someone’s foot was too far past the start, which is easy for an observer to see. Knowing precisely where someone’s foot took off from would require some tech, a camera at least. You’re right though, that under “laboratory conditions” one could do it and might get different results.
timing is part of the ability to win the jump. Anybody who will jump long or high will time its jump as he feels it. It is up to the player if it will start from the very edge of the lane; ad as to the true edge of its landing, there is an acceptable determination.
Lewis held the world record for approximately “ one jump/ round ” that’s an incredible competition between two exceptional athletes ! From any jocks standpoint, finally beating your personal nemesis, and having to accomplish this by a world record is legendary!
I am so old, I remember watching this live on TV back in my childhood in Sicily. One of the very few times my mom let my dad and I have dinner in front of the TV
I watched this live with my home stay family when I was living in Japan. Still gives me goosebumps. The following day, Powell was all over Japanese TV. One program laid out his trajectory in a series of photos. The woman commentator was able to walk under where Powell’s hips were at peak height. Amazing!
Watched it as a 10 year old kid......EVEN MORE AMAZING NOW! Man, imagine sitting on the ground a few feet outside the box and witnessing just how super-human that was.
Powell got the gold and new WR. But remember, Lewis also took part and got gold in 100m and 4x100m. The 100m final was also remarkable, since for the 1st time in a major competition, 6 men ran under 10secs : 1. Lewis : 9.86 a new WR 2. Leroy Burell : 9.88 3. Dennis Mitchell : 9.91 4. Linford Christie : 9.92 5. Frankie Fredericks : 9.95 6. Raymond Stewart : 9.96 Only Bruny Surin and Robson da Silva ran over 10secs.
I know there's a science, art and skill of jumping right at the line, but with todays technology, they could have an accurate reading of where the jumpers jump from and where they land. They should have a competition where there isn't a precise spot to jump, but just a spot of like a meter where they choose to jump within, and it just gives them the accurate length of how far they jump. That way, they can have a raw long jump competition, where they don't have to focus on fouls and timing, etc.
That would do nothing but reduce the competitive aspect and you wouldn't see any notable difference in world record jump distances. Part of the skill being tested is not only how far you can jump but how good, in theory, you are at jumping across something. Think of it as basically a test of who can jump across the widest gap between two cliffs. If you're jumping across a cliff you don't get to pick where the ledge begins. Knowing how far someone can jump from a forced point is thus far more interesting. In a way it is the same principle as the high jump just on the ground. With modern tech we would remove the high jump stick and just have them jump in empty air and use high speed cameras or other devices to measure their raw jump height. But that isn't what the high jump is testing. It's testing your ability to jump OVER a specific point.
@@User-gs1dk - Well high jump is more raw. They can take off from wherever, they just have to make it over that bar. In long jump, the person who can actually jump the furthest isn't always going to win, because the line takeoff is such a huge factor in it, whereas in high jump, the takeoff spot isn't really a factor, they just have to jump as high as they can and make it over the bar. But I understand what you're saying, I'm just saying there should be another alternative as well.
@@ryanschaff123 You're a hater, you know? :) I forgive you. btw, scientists use the metric system also in USA. Have you ever read a scientific paper in your life?
I remember watching this when I was pregnant with my daughter, and I used to run track and especially the long jump. Me and the other guys got around 17 ft and thought it was amazing. Ya men are really challenged with this and men will forever be better at everything then women. Words of wisdom
I only read the news on that WR breaking from newspaper, including a new WR in men's 100m by Lewis. I don't remember which event I watched on TV, maybe men's 400m when Antonio Patigrew got the gold. Ah, I remember now, I watched Charles Austin and Hollis Conway performances in high jump. There were former WR holders in the final : Patrick Sjoeberg, Igor Paklin and Rudolf Povarnitsyin, but these three underperformed. Javier Sotomayor was there too, but Charles Austin beat him.
I remember watching this early in the morning. I stayed up half the night watching it. I remember feeling so bad for Lewis, cause he’d been trying for that record for years by that point. To then break it over & over & still lose must’ve been so tough for him. It was an incredible performance by both these guys.
If you notice at 11:02, this 5th round jump was Carl Lewis' worst landing. His butt is nowhere near sliding into his heel imprints in the sand. Perhaps he could've very easily had a 9.10m+ jump if his butt was even close to his heels here...
Meanwhile, Lewis's long jump achievement in Olympic is remarkable : 4 consecutive gold, from 1984 to 1996. As far as I know, from any sports, only Steven Redgrave has more : 5 in rowing from 1984 to 2000.
THE BEST OF THE BEST track and field event of time !!! And the incredible and huge contest of Lewis. 8,68m - x - 8,83m - 8,91m (too windy ) - Powell break the record and Lewis still concentrate and jump with a little wind IN THE FACE at 8,87m (his record) and the 6th jump at 8,84m !!!! How it's possible to jump so far when the pressure is so hard!!! A great competitor Lewis was and this contest will never never be forget... Thanks for these incredible memories when i was 15 yo in front of my tv in France.
People forget that Bob Beamon did it decades before without good track rubber or Nike spikes and held the record for like 20 years. Glad Powell won, but amazing that Powell really only did LJ while Lewis did the LJ, 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. Incredible athlete.
Powell HJ 7-0 in the 1981 California State High School track championship and took second place to me Anthony Caire 7-1 I always knew he was a great athlete. When he did that jump and broke the world record I was so happy for him and I'm still happy for him today
The three point line is 23'9". Lewis and Powell jumped far enough to hit the stanchion (the base the basket is connected to) from the three point line.
If I recall correctly the only people with more career Olympic gold medals than Carl Lewis are swimmers because they can compete in so many more events than track athletes can.
Greatest competition EVER... everyone got their moneys worth. Guys like Lewis and Bolt are so important to track sports. Look at that crowd, and compare it to the present. Every meet Lewis participated, there was an electric atmosphere.
not many people realize that Carl Lewis was primarily a long jump specialist, who only later transitioned in to sprinting..it is evident in his unique relaxed rhythmic running technique that was primarily engineered for the long jump
Carl Lewis was Showtime... but wasn't loved. Bolt was Showtime and is revered. Lewis competed in 100m, 200m, relays for quite some time and in LJ for ever... and he was a factor in every meet. He was the one who brang the real $$$ to these competitions... he's the golden age of track and field.
I remember watching this when it actually happened back in 1991. The broadcasting is a bit misleading, partly because of the conversion to feet and inches (a very provincial viewpoint for US viewers) and partly because the broadcaster never clarifies that "wind-aided" means that the jump is valid, but just doesn't count as a world record.
This to me is one of the most underrated head to head battles in the sports history. Just before Powell delivered the record-breaking jump, they flashed on the screen that he "has never beaten Carl Lewis in a long-jump competition."
Which leads to the conclusion that the world is nothing but a stage...
Theres a magic timing for jumping both high and long. Sometimes you just nail it and fly like you never flew. You can't teach it.

They’re jumping from an nba three point line to the hoop, thats crazy.
Its further
Not to the hoop. To the stanchion behind the hoop (the thing that the backboard and the hoop are attached to). Three point line is 23'9"; they did over 29".
I suspect they're just about going far and high enough to be able to dunk for three points.
These men aren't jumping..they're flying
Four of Lewis's jump was over 8.80m :
3rd round : 8.83m
4th round : 8.91m (wind-aided)
5th round : 8.87m
last round : 8.84m (wind-aided)
Those jump would win any competition since then.
The effort shown by these two great athletes to respond other big jumps were remarkable. I think current long jumpers will quit after seeing those big jumps. Lewis and Powell are exceptional.
Dwight Stones commentary is so awesome and compliments this epic, best ever competition. Like icing on a cake.
This is so exciting, never seen such a battle between the two greatest jumpers. Impressive!

When they were waiting for the last measurement, Lewis tapped Powell on the shoulder and I think he said, "you got me".
Great sportsmanship displayed here and unbelievable athleticism. Unreal.

Pretty intense meet.
Few people can go through life and hit a moment where they can legitimately and honestly say they gave it all. These two, they both gave it their all. Even though Lewis lost, it must feel amazing to produce such a pure effort. They both gave their best and left their mark.

I can see Powell's record lasting another decade, this has to be one of the greatest sporting moments in history.
For those asking about the measurements, Mike Powell's world record is 8.95m. Bob Beamon's famous leap at the 1968 Olympics was 8.90m. You can look up the rest😊
Yes, and Lewis was 8:91m
Powell’s angry reaction to his foul set him up for victory with his next jump

Powell's jump was more like 29'6" - couldn't believe how much room was left on the launch board … WOW
I watched it live on TV. Amazing
Dwight Stones best track & field announcer ever
I am so old, I remember watching this live on TV back in my childhood in Sicily. One of the very few times my mom let my dad and I have dinner in front of the TV
I watched this live with my home stay family when I was living in Japan. Still gives me goosebumps. The following day, Powell was all over Japanese TV. One program laid out his trajectory in a series of photos. The woman commentator was able to walk under where Powell’s hips were at peak height. Amazing!
Carl Lewis was my hero as a kid.
One of the most impressive display of the will not be denied I have ever witnessed. Both men refusing to give an inch ( literally ).
Powell's look of ecstasy at the end was simply infectious!
Watched it as a 10 year old kid......EVEN MORE AMAZING NOW! Man, imagine sitting on the ground a few feet outside the box and witnessing just how super-human that was.
LEGENDARY. What a competition. I remember watching it.
Powell got the gold and new WR. But remember, Lewis also took part and got gold in 100m and 4x100m.
The 100m final was also remarkable, since for the 1st time in a major competition, 6 men ran under 10secs :
1. Lewis : 9.86 a new WR
2. Leroy Burell : 9.88
3. Dennis Mitchell : 9.91
4. Linford Christie : 9.92
5. Frankie Fredericks : 9.95
6. Raymond Stewart : 9.96
Only Bruny Surin and Robson da Silva ran over 10secs.
@@User-gs1dk Both your point and the way your argued it were very strong. Nice work, Keelan! :)

I remember watching this when I was pregnant with my daughter, and I used to run track and especially the long jump. Me and the other guys got around 17 ft and thought it was amazing. Ya men are really challenged with this and men will forever be better at everything then women. Words of wisdom
I remember watching this live on television. A couple of months later I was in Tokyo inside the same stadium.
Why do they measure wind speed in m/s and length in body parts?
I jumped 7 forearms and 13/19 of an ancle. 🤔

Powell won, but that series by Lewis, multiple jumps over 29’, may never be matched. Astounding.
I remember watching this early in the morning. I stayed up half the night watching it. I remember feeling so bad for Lewis, cause he’d been trying for that record for years by that point. To then break it over & over & still lose must’ve been so tough for him. It was an incredible performance by both these guys.

@Daniel S. don't ruin the analogy ahaha
8:40 That yell, man. It sounds like he really gave it everything he had.
If you notice at 11:02, this 5th round jump was Carl Lewis' worst landing. His butt is nowhere near sliding into his heel imprints in the sand. Perhaps he could've very easily had a 9.10m+ jump if his butt was even close to his heels here...
I remember my brother and I getting up like at 1-2 in the morning to watch this. Simply EPIC!!!!!

Feels like yesterday watching this live. It was incredible. It's hard to believe that Johnson has held the record longer than Beamon.
Powell HJ 7-0 in the 1981 California State High School track championship and took second place to me Anthony Caire 7-1 I always knew he was a great athlete. When he did that jump and broke the world record I was so happy for him and I'm still happy for him today
Wow it's still amazing to watch these 2 athletes compete.
Good Memories. Powell man I was in high school, doing triple jumping. Much Respect
The three point line is 23'9". Lewis and Powell jumped far enough to hit the stanchion (the base the basket is connected to) from the three point line.
The thing about Lewis was he was running the 100, 200, 4x100 and the long jump. That is strenuous and he still was tops. Crazy!
If I recall correctly the only people with more career Olympic gold medals than Carl Lewis are swimmers because they can compete in so many more events than track athletes can.
Surprised CL didn't ask for him to be tested for steroids or say he had springs in his shoes. Carl was a sore loser

This is how the Olympics should be broadcast.....no stupid stories, no fake drama, just show the competition!
Thank you putting this up. I remember wwos being cut off rd5, my dad telling me "Carl Lewis is gonna win." rip.
The best reaction I have seen in sportsmanship in awhile 9:15. I just love how his face lighted up when he realized he got the worlds record.
