I thought Spartans were committed to staying in Open Class, though I've felt that they probably could have made the transition to World Class at any point in the last decade or so. Guess they changed their minds. In any event, there's already been too few corps going to OC championships in recent years for it to have preliminaries as a meaningful elimination round. With Spartans going WC, that situation won't improve unless DCI can get more OC corps to be financially stable enough to show up for finals week.
I mean they are a 900 lb GOrilla, without the structured and intentional barrier used in the BD organization. Gold seems to be contemplating a jump as well, given that they already challenge PC in many ways. Greater San Diego is the nation's largest urban core with so many gaps in representation in multiple ways.
I remember finals for Open class just being a second prelims, even though the raiders hyped it a bunch, it was still more lowkey cause of the rain in my opinion
Makes sense these days since finances for drum corps is shaky as it is. Also, it does make sense to see where they are as a group that way they know if going World Class makes sense for them.
When I marched in 2017 to 2019, P.G operated the Spartans as a smaller group, and as a whole we were better off as an Open Class because we had the funds to sustain ourselves, didn’t travel much when on tour (basically just the east coast and Midwest). But that was before a lot of Open Class groups folded or stopped competing, so my guess is that in order to stay relevant within the activity, we have to compete with the bigger groups to survive, and break out of just being a New England corps.

What's the benefit of becoming World Class in 2026, a longer tour for the members?
The corps gets a bigger cut of appearance fees per show also.
Seriously?!?!?! I was thinking about Spartans last night and love that they stay in Open class.
