Beekeeping management techniques we all need - Roger Patterson

  • To manage bees with care and efficiency every beekeeper needs to develop their own system. Initially, they will probably closely copy their tutor and then when they have gained more knowledge and experience they will modify their system to suit their own circumstances. In beekeeping, there are often many ways to achieve the same thing and they may all work in different circumstances. The important thing is to bring ideas together to make your system work well for you and your bees.
Good beekeepers understand bees, have open minds and are capable of lateral thinking. This allows them to assess what they have been told and shown or have thought about themselves, so they can decide if possible changes will be an improvement or not.
Roger Patterson discusses some simple management techniques that we all need to perform at various times. They have been learnt from watching bees and beekeepers for over half a century. They may not be found in books and may not fit your system, but with a little tweaking they may be suitable. This is how we learn and develop our own management systems to help improve our standard of beekeeping.

The cutting of comb, I have done with a kitchen metal round cutter, about 2 inches across, worked great for me in two colonies last year, and used half cocktail stick, my G grandfather used to do same, Mr Sladen,

QUESTION - after freezing varroa infested drone brood for a week what would any of you do with the resulting dead brood. A) cut out or melt down - B) fork out and give back to the colony to clean up - C) simply put the still sealed (dead) brood back for the colony to uncap and clean up or - D) something you do that I haven't thought of. Any comments would be appreciated.

Yes I've often wondered could you just freeze for a week and then put it back in.

@@davecavana1031 I've used a multi-pronged uncapping fork once the frame has thawed after the freezer to get out as many dead brood as possible and put the resulting (messy looking frame) into the centre of the brood nest of a highly populated colony. Seems to work but I'd love to hear from someone more experienced as I'm sure you would too.

Queens have a stinger, but unlike a worker bee's stinger, hers does not have a barb so the queen can sting multiple times. It is the drone that does not have a stinger. I suggest that you wear a vail whenever you work your bees. I learned that the hard way when I got stung on the end of my nose and upper lip. Good luck with your daughter queen.
