    As a child in my grandfathers funeral procession we drove past a construction site and I can remember as they ran about shouting to each other as every worker on the site removed their hard hats in a sign of respect, obviously for me as a child on one of the saddest days of my life that cheered me up so much, especially as they did not know my grandfather, I just knew that as an retired construction worker himself he would have really appreciated that. Have respect people, peace.

      @@Kiki-yw9kc The funeral "procession" is becoming a thing of the past in some countries, except in smaller country areas. There are numerous reasons, the main one being people do not have the time to travel in processions if there was one, it is far better to have a one venue funeral service, either at the funeral home, or at the chapel of a crematorium or cemetery chapel. There is no rule that says you must have a procession. This keeps travel time down and often people use processions because they have not been told there is an alternative. Funeral processions are more "traditional". these days than necessity. And funerals only travel slowly because traditionally, horse drawn hearses were naturally slow. In some states funerals are not permitted on freeways unless they travel at a reasonable speed to keep traffic moving. That is common sense. In places like New Zealand and Australia, in major cities you hardly see a funeral procession at all these days, maybe from a church, and even there services are being held in one venue. Grieving families have enough to put up with by attending what are basically "two" funerals, one at a chapel or church, then the committal prayers at a crematorium or graveside. Conducting the full service at one venue can lessen grief for some families. Of course there will always be those who want the "traditional" service at each end with a procession in between, but it is becoming less common. Tradition is one thing, practicality and reduced costs are more important these days, and the end result is the same regardless. Whether traditonal "purists" like it or not, the one venue funeral is becoming popular. Just like hearse colours have changed to lighter, instead of morbid black. The funeral is actually for the living to celebrate life, so why stick with old fashioned black or dark hearses, simply because that is how it has been done in the past. Progressive funeral directors offer many alternatives now to families, (even hearse colours at some places), and this should have been done decades ago. Coffins and caskets come in various colors as well. This is the 21st century. Just because traditions are changing does not mean respect has gone. In fact it has improved for the better with alternatives to having to have a procession being introduced.

      @@125sloth as an Irish Catholic, when our loved one dies there is a process involved. The deceased is buried within 3/4 days of death. Tradition is we hold a wake. Their body after being prepared by a local undertaker is brought back to their home ( or family members). There is an open coffin and friends and family pay their respects. They prey for them, talk about them and honour their memory in every way. Morning of funeral, they are brought from the house to the Chapel and given a sent off. The place bes at a standstill while the procession takes the loved one on their last journey which is to the graveyard. Hats are took off and many bless themselves on seeing the coffin regardless of they even knew the deceased. Older motorist are more incline to wait while the procession moves down the road. Younger motorists might not be so willing and try to pass. It's a mark of respect and the least we can do, by allowing their last journey and accepting the disruption of our commute for all of 10 minutes or so.

    • @125sloth
      @125sloth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Kiki-yw9kc Yes I am familiar with the Irish send off. The Irish have shown the world what can be done and reinforces that the funeral is also for the living. It is a great tradition that many could learn from. And Ireland has the great laid back lifestyle also where respect takes it's time and not rushed like in some places that rush in everything they do. And the Irish wake is a very respectful, yet often "happy" way to remember their loved one. I am going to Ireland next year for a wedding, (Covid permitting), and hope to catch up with a funeral director in Derry. Might even help with some hands on work.

    My mother met a hearse and funeral procession. When she put on brakes to stop for the procession, the brakes locked and Mom’s car went right into the hearse. The accident report did not list a hearse as a possible accident vehicle. This all happened many years ago in the early 70’s. And we have never forgotten. This is a good example of why they make anti-lock brakes.

    I remember as a child, walking to the shop with my grandmother when a funeral procession drove past. My grandma stood still and pulled at my hand to stand still too. Everyone on the paths stood still, some men taking their hats off too. This was back in the mid-seventies when there were older men who wore a suit and tie daily and never left the house without a hat on. That moment, watching everyone stand still with their heads bowed stayed with me and I still do it to this day

    To avoid accidents with hearses: Stop at red light. Don't speed. The passenger in the hearse has got enough time, believe me.
    No need to ignore traffic rules while on the way to the indefinite rest. No reason to hurry at all.
    And... insted of having 40 (?) cars in a motorcade, it would be much more environmental friendly to rent a coach (or two).
    Also, coach drivers usually know how to drive and how to avoid accidents.

    The thing that blows me away is the fact the hurse rolled! A 2014 model year Cadillac DTS alone weights 4,500 pounds, if I remember correctly a hurse converted DTS weights somewhere from 13,500 to 15,250 ibs due to all the added security devices for the casket in Just such a crash, also that Toyota was probably booking it if it flipped that huge thing over.. but other than that I feel bad for the family who had to experience that..

    • @Underappreciatedclassics
      @Underappreciatedclassics 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anne Liesveld there is damage on the passenger side front door, so the hurse has the right of way, the front end would have been destroyed if they T-boned the Toyota. When it hit the hurse most likely lost its center of gravity and rolled over on to its back like you see in the video.

    How? There is a universal rule that Hearses are allow to go 15mph, slightly faster if not being used for a procession. The people and cars around stop in their tracks to let the vehicle through. The rules used for police, firefighter and ambulance vehicles also applies for hearses. Why is that hard for people to understand? The individualism of the US is the reason why we are hit with the coronavirus hardest. >_>

  • @Lilalipooh

    That headline is very misleading. The hearse did not crash, it was CRASHED INTO. Yall should really change it, the blame is not on the driver of the hearse, its on the other driver. My heart aches for the family and friends of the deceased who had to witness this.

    I can't believe this would happen, the escort, whether city police or an escort service uses lights and sirens during the escort. How could this happen, laws here in Arizona require motorists to pull over to the right and not interrupt the procession. I did see a man arrested for complaining when a funeral procession at least a mile long shut down Northern Avenue. The man got testy and making threats to stop the procession, Phoenix Police arrested him. Some have no respect for those that pass on or for their families during the most awful day of their lives.
