    Kinda surprised you didn't mentioned Guests, they were as much of a meme as Noobs and seeing them either having no idea what they're doing or actually destroying actual players in a game is always a funny sight to see back then.

      RPG: standard rpg genre stuff, turn based or whatever else really

      Makes me think of Speed, the custom game/map for Halo Reach. Take your pick of vehicle, drive it down the ramp towards the enemy players and pray you have enough speed to not get hit, if you make it to the bottom you're instantly teleported back to the top keeping your momentum until you become an absolute menace of a wrecking ball.

    An interesting thing to note is that nowadays, since Roblox has become so corporate and far-removed from what it used to be, nostalgia is becoming a serious commodity on there. Tons of revivals/archives of various old games are popping up left and right, roblox hat makers are desperately trying to recreate classic offsale hats as closely as possible, and channels like mine and Toastedcherries that go into detail about the old days of Roblox are finding great success. Fans are even creating whole new revival platforms like Novetus that let players use the old clients from the late 2000s and early 2010s. The things you talked about in this video are currently becoming more relevant than they have been in a very long time.

    In my opinion, the biggest travesty was Roblox getting rid of the genre tab/searching. It was such a heavy blow to me that it caused me to stop playing in 2016/17 after playing religiously since 2011. I've popped in every now and then since, but the genre stuff was my favorite thing ever, especially for Horror things, so that on top of all the other changes Izzy described just snuffed out the fire for me.

      @kaitdillard ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I heavily agree with this. I got back into the game recently out of curiosity and everything looks so foreign to me. The search feature is fine, but I can’t believe there’s no explore page for games like there used to be. Let people tag their games as genres/mechanics so people can discover underrated gems. I used to play every popular game on the site, but even as a kid I was also always looking for smaller lobbies of lesser known games. Upon returning, those were the ones I wanted to visit the more.

    • @ZacAttackk
      @ZacAttackk ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The genre system is very poor. They have the same list of roughly a dozen simple genres since 2008 (fighting, fps, horror, etc) which are very vague. They really ought to have something similar to Steam's tagging, and more popular experiences be reviewed to verify if the tag is legit

    Hi, I run the Warrior Cats game! Thanks for highlighting the history of the game on Roblox. I love to look back on it because, in hinsight like you said, everyone was still having a fun time, roleplaying seriously. Whether or not the cats were made out of sausages or modeled in blender didn't change anything for people. Everyone was having a good time, and some of my closest friends come from those days. It's one of the things I hope we can provide to people who play our games as well.
    Games die but the connections we can create through playing them can live on. That's probably my favorite part of doing game dev, no matter what age we do it in or what platform we're on.

Unfortunately I think the creator turned out to be bad so he got banned and none of the other developers can update or moderate the game so it's kind of dying. I think one of the developers made another version but they changed the map a lot.

    From when I first made my account in 2009, I was Obsessed with Roblox until about 2011-2012. I really miss the humility of old Roblox the most. Even if the games from a technical standpoint weren’t as good as they are now, I liked how they all felt like some guy’s personal DIY project that they made for fun - it had a charm that the corporate-mobile-game-esque stuff that floods the site now never will. Retrostudio and Super Nostalgia Zone are the only reasons I occasionally go back to Roblox these days LOL

    • @mcallahk
      @mcallahk ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah!! Many of the games on there are impressive from a technical standpoint, but they don't have the same charm as the ones I played when I was 11-12. Sure, those games sucked. But I liked them (maybe because I was a dumb child). In a way, those games were inspirational. If a game like the Warrior Cats one Izzzyzzz mentioned was popular, it looked like anyone could make a game that other people would enjoy. Nowadays it feels like you have to be ready to devote your entire life to making a game for Roblox, and have a team of people ready to help you. Plus the games back then were nowhere near as predatory in terms of microtransactions compared to the games available today.

And it's the funnest thing ever. I do agree with what you say in a major scale but I think that roblox still is ful with a dudes diy projects, you juts gotta look

      I started playing roblox MUCH later but i am very glad im not the only one who feels like a lot of games on there feel very corporate and for profit more than entertainment, there are some recent games that ive played that do have that same silly DIY project feel to them but a lot of times i join a game and theres a bunch of gamepasses and ads for their in app purchases and daily log in type stuff to try and coax you into playing regularly. Its why i dont really play roblox much anymore.

It’s cool seeing the world and pop culture through their perspective for a change. It’s a great reminder that there are different kinds of people in the world who have vastly different interests than myself.
    Edit: I was unaware Izzzyzzz uses they/them pronouns. Apologies.

    • @ViniSocramSaint

      Funny thing to think about is how many completely different worlds (scenes) exist in pop culture, simultaneously, at any time. I am almost in my thirties, and I am one of those kids that were too old to be Gen Z but too young to be Millenials. It's interesting to think I knew what is an arcade, had no idea Doom existed, yet grew up in the "silver age of videogames", where we play at home, there (seemingly) existed only shooters and racers and everything is toxic. I thought I knew everything that was going on currently, then comes Izzzyzzz and reveals the absolute unit of a historical campaign that was Neopets, My Little Pony fan games and artistic japanese games. All happening so close and us none the wiser.
      Kinda inspiring to go out there and have a piece of all those uncountable worlds existing right now

    What I truly love is when games use the Old Roblox aesthetic for an actual purpose, not just for "nostalgia's a bitch huh" factor. Take, for example, Jim's Computer, which uses it to create a sense of contrast with the disturbing nature of the game's story, or Phighting!, which takes old, famous roblox games, outfits, gears, stuff like that and turns it into an interconnected universe, even stuff like the original soundtrack has references to old roblox related things. Check both of these games out, they're both really high-quality and need more love(especially phighting, criminal how underrated that one is)

    I never played Roblox but once out of boredom read the review on the App Store and Google Play, I had a great time. My favourite was a child saying a server was scary and that you should be “60yo to not be scared”. I've always missed the old Roblox style, and it seems like a lot of modern creators for the platform do, too; I see maps in games that have the old blocky studs on them all the time. They sort of threw away any semblance of a brand identity, and in doing that I kinda think it lost its niche appeal (which was probably the idea, i.e. appealing to a wider audience, but it still kinda sucks). It was always super charming. My friends and I will go back every now and then to play an old client in multiplayer just for the hell of it

      To be completely honest, I think Roblox as a platform sort of benefitted from allowing more takes on art direction to flourish and I see the retro style as more a nice little thing in of itself rather than imposed (again, Roblox not being a standalone game but instead an engine for them). What I do see is many more players still opting for a 1.0/2.0/3.0 avatar or something adjacent to it, though, so I think that's a constant.

      @comfycookie3403 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    there were many of these, too many to count, but some more notable ones would definietly be Cul De Sac, Universal Roleplay and Kimonya since they allowed you to use a GUI that let you morph into any decal just from its ID, rather than choosing one from a preset list or spawnroom

    I played roblox religiously in my tween years and always loved logging onto roleplay games just to ignore other players and roleplay alone. I also frequented "adopt and raise" games where gameplay consisted mostly of trying and failing to get adopted and trying not to get kidnapped by people running around trying to scoop you up in a low poly stroller. Now my little sister is in her tweens and I always hear her playing with her friends. I feel like it should make me feel nostalgic but the game has been polished into oblivion and I can barely even recognize it anymore :(

    Roblox passed me by, being a 16 year old who had convinced Mum that paying a WoW sub was the greatest idea a year before it went live, I was otherwise occupied. I think the point where I saw full on strategy games inside of Roblox was when I noted just how crazy the creativity of it was, but it was too late to pull me in. The whole oof meme and saga around that afterwards I definitely appreciate, though.

    To see Izzy making a video about Roblox is like a dream come true, although I have played other games she had made videos about before like Animal Jam and Club Penguin, none of those ever came close to be as fun as Roblox was to me, I have been playing it since 2016 when I was a guest. Seeing all the changes and events that happened over the years along with the community is so interesting because it almost feels like each Roblox era is it's own decade with different graphics, styles, etc. I remember getting excited whenever I got to know someone irl that also enjoyed Roblox like me, also making friends online was a lot more fun than today and we aways used to have fun together playing our favorite games we recommended to eachother. It's kinda sad seeing some of the bad things that happened over time, but I still think it's an amazing game despite what some think. Even if some things may have been better back them, there's deffinitely a reason why Roblox keeps growing even today.

    I joined sometime before 2013 and played extensively as a guest before that point.
    One of my favorite games that I kept constantly coming back to was a roleplaying game called something like "Be a winged wolf or other creature" and all you did was fly around and meet other people as wild animals. It was so amazing to me. As a kid who also loved warriors, I can imagine why you liked a game like that too. The game I played was super barebones, but it was fun just to talk to people and act out those little stories. I will always be nostalgic for how simple the maps could get back then.
    Another game I played a lot back then was called "Le Bote". It was a sort of naval game where you controlled boats, maybe slightly like world of warships. I was obsessed with it too, I played it almost nonstop until updates broke it and the creator left for college and was unable to maintain it.
    One of the first games I ever played was probably "Code Red Rescue". It was one of the Tadcool games, so it was almost entirely freemodels with little extra work put into it. I first saw it at a friend's house, where they introduced me to roblox. It was a really simple game where players could fly helicopters or drive boats to an island and fight zombies.
    More recently, and by that I mean within the last eight years, I became a bit obsessed with a game called Wild Savannah, where you roleplay as animals in the savannah. It definitely felt like a place to act out the same fantasies that captured me in the wolf game I mentioned earlier.
    I think one of the most interesting things about some of the older roblox games is how intensely social they can be. There wasn't often much game to them, they basically only acted as an extension to playground make-believe, but I feel like that's a thing you don't really see at all in other areas of videogames. As exploitative as roblox the company can be, I think I will always be nostalgic for the experiences I had as a kid playing roblox. Thank you for this video, it helped me remember some things

    A shocking and disappointing lack of mentioning Groups! I can't even imagine how many countless hours I spent roleplaying as an army/military person in clans like Roblox Assault Team, FEAR, UCR, etc.. So so much fun doing little training games and fighting little battles and stuff.

    I remember these "Find the X" such as Find the Kirbys or Find the Domos where you'd have to look around a decently-sized map to find all of the hidden characters, each having a cool skin to them. I specifically remember one in Find the Domos where you'd have to go up to the moon and wait for a comet Domo to fly by.
    There was also Pokemon Brick Bronze which I won't talk about because everyone already knows about it.

    I played Roblox in 2008 when I was 12 and had an absolute blast playing with friends. The main games I used to play was Solar Wars, Apartment Life and Medieval RP.
    Solar Wars was a mode where you could design and fly your own space ships and colonise other planets. The game would allow you to take off, go into space and land on other planets (something which modern Starfield cannot do!). My friends and I would colonise planets and make little cities, and try to make alliances with players on other planets and go to war with those who were against us.
    Apartment Life was an RP server we would all play where you could claim a plot and would have a pre-built house you can live in with friends. Rudimentary building tools would allow you to customise your home and we would have a great time “playing house”. One time a hacker joined and gave themself admin powers and basically started a coup, spawning in guns, vehicles like tanks and rockets. It was scary as a kid hiding in our house from players with guns outside after spending months on this peaceful RP server! I have some great memories of this server.
    Lastly, Medieval RP is a server I would play that had zero combat and was entirely RP. You could pick your role in the kingdom and there was a 1/1 role as king on the server! If the server was full and all roles were fulfilled it would be like game of thrones and it would be amazing. I’m not sure what year it was, but there was a Roblox Easter event where eggs rained from the sky on every mode across the game at a certain time of day. When this event happened I was playing Medieval RP and it was chaos. Certain eggs would explode when they hit the ground and these eggs ended up hitting the caste on the map and blowing it up! This server that had no combat suddenly turned into a warzone. We had a great time and worked all the destroyed buildings into the RP.
    Sorry for the paragraph but I love to share these memories. I was so happy to be there in the earlier days of Roblox. I stopped playing in 2011 when minecraft beta came out I made the transition to this. Hope you enjoy the memories 😊❤ Fantastic video

    The video was a delight as always. I myself started playing roblox when I was 5-6, in 2007-2008 and I played it pretty consistently until early 2015 or so. I logged back on after so many years and roblox was unrecognizable to me. I had my first “I’m getting old” moment when I saw kids on a new game arguing over who was most ‘veteran’ and someone said “I am because I played since 2018 when roblox came out” and that shit blew my mind. As funny as it was it was something so odd to see since it was a big part of my childhood 10 years before that. What I wouldn’t give to go back and play 2010 roblox again for one day with the shitty galore of drama, iconic sound effects, and pension for pvp in any game that allowed it

I remember there was another version like it where you can bank your items and I used to bank all the Op guns I managed to get and never used because I was scared to use it. I also roleplayed on this post-apocalyptic map which had such a badass map. It was called after the flash! They had this cool town that was built on the water and that’s where everyone would hangout

    seeing this on my recommended got me so excited!! I've been hoping you'd cover old classic ROBLOX :D
    I'm in my early twenties now and started on roblox somewhere between 2009-2010 and I miss the old stuff a whole bunch. I think a lot about the new ROBLOX is really endearing but nothing really beats the vibes of the original site. I about screamed when you mentioned the 2D morph roleplays (commonly titled "Paper RPs" I assume starting from paper mario roleplay games) cause they were how I spent a giant chunk of my childhood. The one I played the most was titled Universe Adventure Crossover RP. I ended up meeting friends on there that I still talk to nearly 15 years later pretty much daily, they're some of the best friends I have and that one game introduced me to them and a bunch of series I grew to enjoy through that roleplay game as well. I also used to play this sonic paper RP that was more horror-themed? I was never able to find it years later but I remember it had a grungy, rusted look with an abandoned town, red cloudy skybox and a spooOOooky lab that had blood splattered rooms. I miss it.
    On another note, does anybody remember during that early ROBLOX era (2009-2012ish?) where the entire site just really REALLY hated barney the dinosaur, dora the explorer and Justin Bieber? I remember the front page would be littered with games about blowing them up and destroying them or fighting against them. We all just collectively hated them as kids I guess

    I was just telling someone a few days ago how me and my sibling got bullied out of the old Warrior Cats game because we never actually read the books and made unnaturally colored cats. Also I am SO HAPPY to see someone else knows Pokemon Legends, I played it so much and loved exploring and doing puzzles to unlock all the Pokemon, I miss it so much. They have another game that seems to be the same thing but not with original creatures. I haven't checked it out yet but sadly I never see anyone else playing it either.

    I somehow managed to completely avoid learning about Roblox despite being terminally online until I felt way too old to get into it. I had no idea how crazy the graphics and game mechanics have gotten.... I work with young kids now and a lot of them were super into this horror game called Rainbow Friends that a couple of the kids had plushies of. I was so shocked when I finally learned the game that's big enough to have it's own merch sold in stores is hosted on Roblox. Wild.

    roblox, along with toontown online, was absolutely where i spent a lot of my time when i was younger. i definitely played a lot of the roleplay games, many of which are broken these days. a pirate's life is one that i have fond memories of in particular, but it seems completely broken. work at a pizza place is still fairly popular, which makes me happy.
    one of my favorite things to do on roblox was play those find the badges games- i am way too addicted to cool stickers that tell me i accomplished something!
    also being a toontown player, i of course tried to look for other games that were toontown in roblox. there weren't very many when i was younger, but there's so many now! still very surprising to me how meep city, a game very much inspired by toontown, was one of roblox's most popular games.
