  • Amazon rolled out the first of its planned fleet of long-haul electric trucks in Los Angeles this week, but the company already has a large amount of electronic vehicles rolling through much of the country, delivering hundreds of millions of packages.

They look good on paper to the general public , and jeff Bezos probably has a couple of billion petty cash in his wallet and it won't be a big deal if they fail , and they could fail , EVs run on batteries which are a very expensive consumable because they degrade the longer you use them .
And in heavy trucks , you are at a disadvantage from the very beginning because EVs are very heavy , and range is limited for long distance heavy duty trucking.
Perhaps for short shuttles they may work .
Another point to be made is we don't know what sort of incentives or what sort of deal Bezos got for his Rivian fleet , EVs are expensive as a general rule , and apparently Rivian is losing money , so let's not just assume EV trucks and commercials are a viable option just yet.
I was in the motor trade and in the trucking industry, I wouldn't buy an EV truck .

That is true globally for the grid on average. But interestingly, it also depends on time of day. In mid-day, states with a lot of solar get up to 80% to 100% grid powered by renewables especially solar.
In Canada, their grid is 80% powered by non-fossil fuels thanks to their abundance of hydroelectric and nuclear power.
Moreover, EVs provide incentive to decarbonize and upgrade the grid the world over. Whereas ICE vehicles provide no such incentive not now nor ever in the past. Continued use of ICE just keeps the world dependent on the likes of oil dictators like Putin and under the heel of organizations like OPEC+.

Each van should also have at least one Vehicule-to-Load (V2L) 110V (220V in Europe) outlet, that could come handy as back-up or emergency cases.
Also, with new improvements to lightweight solar panels, integration of rooftop solar panels on the vans should be explored.

      Its increasingly renewable energy.
Depends on location. In aggregate, the US grid mix is already 50% non-fossil fuel. In Canada, its 80% thanks to their abundance of hydroelectric and nuclear power.
Depends on time of day. In some states during mid-day, their grid is 80% to 100% powered by non-fossil fuels, usually some combo of solar & wind.
Regions like US, Canada and EU already set deadline for 2035 to have a net zero grid.
What's more, EVs provide incentive to decarbonize and upgrade grids the world over. OTOH, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles provide no such incentive -- not now nor ever in the past. Continued use of ICE just keeps the world dependent on the likes of oil dictators such as Putin who use oil as an economic weapon and for international blackmail. Continued use of ICE also keeps us under the heel of organizations like OPEC+.

Urban smog is responsible for sickly yellow-brown haze that covers all of our major urban centers. It causes all sorts of economic losses from health problem ranging from minor coughing & tiredness to cancer and brain diseases.
Furthermore, gasoline engines require benzene (a well-known carcinogen) to be added to prevent pre-mature fuel detonation that causes damaging "engine knock". It used to be a lead-based compound that was added and the petro- and auto-industries lobbied hard to say that lead has no health effects!

Environmental wise & cost per mile wise this an insane deal knowing nobody is complaining about “charging”.... The average UPS truck gets 5-8mpg average…. A ups driver drives about 100k miles costing insane maintenance& gas prices for a poor fuel economy truck… (for this scenario) let’s judge it by 3 years & 300k miles. With a higher 8mpg you’d average 37,500 gallons (300k miles divided by 8 mpg) because that’s always how you calculate fuel consumption. Each gallon becomes 20 pounds of emissions so that’s 750,000 pounds (or about 340.19 metric tons) of CO2 emissions......... In a sad comparison the battery only takes 3-16 metric tons to produce IF it uses zero recycled material AND stricky comes from (NCM) batteries chemistry unlike (LPH) which uses zero rare earth metals used I’d 37% of EVs today. For the price you Multiply that by the price of gas, let's say $4.20 a gallon in my state (NV) or something like a larger state meaning California which is $5.25, you’d get $157,500-196,875 for the price of gas over the course of 3 Years/300k miles….. I literally wish that price in cost comparison went to the driver but that’s not how the game works. 2 strong reasons why we study fossil fuels & clean energy footprints in the U.S. 🇺🇸 California my old home actually just hit the cleanest grid energy of 33 days of PURE CLEAN ENERGY early 2024… Clean energy is peaking 🌱
