  • Product trade-off decisions can often be influenced by intuition or the founder's perspective, but grounding these decisions in financial analysis ensures a more objective and strategic approach. When evaluating product trade-offs, it's essential to focus on the financial impact rather than just effort, time, or cost.
In the latest Dear Melissa episode, I discuss how to effectively use ROI frameworks for SaaS products to guide these decisions. Here are some key strategies to consider:
    1. Strategic Alignment: Connect your product decisions to strategic intents like increasing ARR, retention, or reducing costs.
    2. Cost of Delay: This framework helps measure the benefit over time, showing how much potential revenue is lost by delaying a product's release.
    3. Financial Modeling: Use realistic assumptions to estimate potential savings, customer retention, and sales, ensuring your projections are grounded in data.
Using cost of delay can help you communicate better with executives and stakeholders who may initially have different priorities, but in the end want the same outcomes for the companies. This approach not only clarifies the financial benefits but also aligns the team on strategic decisions.
For those looking to dive deeper into cost of delay, Joshua Arnold's Black Swan Farming website offers excellent resources.
How do you incorporate financial analysis into your product decisions? Share your insights and experiences in the comments-I’d love to hear how you’re approaching this challenge!

I would actually love to hear some case studies of your experience in using cost of delay to help with decision-making like this. That sounds super intriguing and real world examples could make a really interesting video. Especially where you might be using swag estimates versus spending weeks in economic modeling.

Great podcast as always. I just wanted to point out that per Reinertsen cost of delay is about not just the sequencing but the total life cycle profit difference depending on whether you do a or b first not just profit made in the time period of development. I'm sure that's what you were describing but just a clarification.
