@@MatthewNorthMusic Thanks, did you try the Gateway and weather services? As an aside Telstar is still being developed and the next release is a complete rewrite this time in Go, so more services to come. Enjoy!

The modem has a standard RJ-11 telephone jack; however, it was forbidden to connect a modem to a BT line in the UK until some time after the first round of privatisation in 1984. All telephones were hard-wired to the line (no wall socket) until later in the 1980's, and had to be one of a few standard designs rented from BT, or the Post Office before the split in about 1982.

@@MatthewNorthMusic Many rural folk had to suffer operator connected calls, so no modem for them. I had a three-digit number until well into the 1980's. There is still no mobile signal where I live, and the latest application for a mast was refused on the grounds it would be out of keeping with the area. Internet here is 6 Mb/s.

Outstanding video Mathew , love my old 8 bits , wish I’d bought a bbc in the 80s , I always ended up with duds like the dragon 32
Enjoyed the Sinclair stuff the most . Didnt get a c64 til 89 when the price had come down to about £50 second hand .
I was also foolish enough to buy a new Sony MSX around 85 on sale in Dixon’s , should have got a bbc .

Do you still have your Dragon? There is a lively retro scene for them too.

Wow. Wasn't expecting to hear pulse-based dial sounds like @4:29, but in hindsight.... of course this all predates DTMF tones for phone dialling.

The 'Le Modem' is not very common, and hasn't been documented. Any chance of you scanning the manual? I'd also like to see the internals of the modem to understand how it works, which UART, modem, dialler parts are in there.

Matthew have you ever sampled any sounds on a BBC? I'm getting back into programming. Need some better sounds for my games and music too.

Very cool. Are the calls expensive? I especially loved the pulse dialing and the Marillion t-shirt.

My second computer was a Beeb. Great machine to learn programming on - shame programming turned out to be such an exploitative career.
